  • As a part of basic investigation to Fishery Purge Project for the Special Administrative in Chollanamdo Province, the sedimentary environmental characteristics of Yoja Bay at 15 stations were studied. The analysis was carried out in July, 1998, through studies of Loss On Ignition (LOI) by depth, Total Sulfide (T-5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations and Grain-size distribution. The LOI value was found to be 6.20-12.20% (mean of 8.89%), with the neighboring Sunhakri and Haksanri areas showing slightly higher values. These values were similar to the LOI values observed in the Hansan-Koje Bay and Jinju Bay areas on the southern coast of Korea. T-S and COD concentrations were found to be, respectively, 0.060-0.104 mg/gㆍd (mean of 0.052 mg/gㆍd) and 5.53-29.71 mg/gㆍd(mean of 13.24 mg/gㆍd), not exceeding eutrophication limits. T-S concentration was especially high at stations close to the central areas of the bay and inland areas, which caused by organic matter input from the nearby agricultural areas. COD concentration was very high at stations nearby the bay entrance and Doonbyungdo, but the mean value was lower than that of Hansan-Koje Bay. This leads us to believe that the level of pollution in Yoja Bay is not significant. The prevailing sediment composition was mud, consisting of 61.38% silt and 34.87% clay. • In this study, the ionic composition of volcanogenically derived particles and their temporal and spatial distributions have been investigated to evaluate the impact of the volcanic eruption on the local ecosystem and residents. To this end, an intensive field study was conducted to measure the size-segregated particulate matters at the east part of Sakurajima in Japan. Fractionated sampling of particles into > $PM_{10}$, $PM_{10-2.5}$, and $PM_{2.5}$ was made by a multi nozzle cascade impactor (MCI). The concentration of various ions present in the size-resolved particles was determined by Ion chromatography. The time dependent 3-dimensional Volcanic Ash Forecast Transport And Dispersion (VAFTAD) model developed by the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) indicated that the sampling site of this work was affected by the volcanic aerosol particles plume. The temporal distributions of sulfate and $PM_{2.5}$ during the field campaign were significantly variable with important contributions to particle mass concentration. The chlorine loss, suspected to be caused by acidic components of volcanic gases, occurred predominantly in fine particles smaller than $10\;{\mu}m$.

  • Weight loss and nutrient dynamics of oak and pine leaf litter during decomposition were investigated from December 2005 through June 2008 at Mt. Worak National Park as a part of National Long-Term Ecological Research Program in Korea. The decay constant (k) of oak and pine leaf litter were 0.314 and 0.217, respectively. After 30 months decomposition, remaining weight of oak and pine leaf litter was 45.5% and 58.1%, respectively. Initial C/N ratio of oak and pine leaf litter was 53.4 and 153.0, respectively. Carbon % of initial oak and pine leaf litter was similar with each other; however, nitrogen content of initial oak leaf litter (0.85%) was greater than that of initial pine leaf litter (0.33%). N and P concentration in both decomposing leaf litter increased significantly during decomposition. There was no net N and P mineralization period in decomposing pine leaf litter. K, Ca and Mg concentration in both decomposing leaf litter showed different pattern with those of N and P. After 30 months decomposition, remaining nutrients in oak and pine leaf litter were 97.7 and 216.2% for N, 123.2 and 216.5% for P, 39.3 and 44.8% for K, 47.9 and 40.6% for Ca, 30.7 and 51.2% for Mg, respectively.

  • A novel sensitive and non-invasive ring-type glucose probe was designed and measured. The magnitude and phase of return loss change with different concentration of the glucose solution inside the loop structure. Ring type probe is more advantageous than open ended probe to measure electrical characteristics under the skin. The maximum difference of return loss was 0.94 for the concentration difference of 0% and 20% at 285MHz and more sensitive in low frequency.

  • The effect of crosslinking on hand of the cellulase treated Tencel fabrics was investigated. Tencel fabrics were crosslinked with DMDHEU, mechanically prefibrillated, hydrolyzed by cellulase, and treated with softener. The treated fabrics were characterized by add-on, weight loss, DP rating, WRA, strength, SEM analysis and hand measurement. As DMDHEU concentration increased, weight loss of DMDHEU/cellulase treated fabrics decreased. However, cellulase treatment decreased DP properties and strength retention. Less fibrils were observed in the cellulase treated fabrics after DMDHEU treatment than the cellulase treated ones. It was confirmed that crosslinking with DMDHEU treatment was effective to control fibrillation. At 5% of DMDHEU concentration, DMDHEU/cellulase treated fabrics showed softer, smoother and bulkier hand compared with other treated fabrics. Among mechanical properties, bending and shearing properties were decreased progressively through DMDHEU, cellulase, and softener treatment. DMDHEU treatment contributed to impart resilience, cellulase treatment to bulkiness and softener treatment to smoothness. As the treatment of DMDHEU, cellulase, and softener progressed NUMREI, FUKURAMI, and THV increased with the exception of KOSHI.

  • In this study, an optical fiber assembly directly coupled with a laser diode or a photo diode is designed to confirm high reliable optical coupling efficiency of optical transmitter(Tx) and receiver(Rx). The optical fiber assembly is fabricated by soldering an optical fiber and a Kovar ferrule using a glass solder after inserting an optical fiber through a Kovar ferrule. The Kovar which has good welding characteristics is applied to introduce laser welding technique. The glass solder has excellent thermal characteristics such as thermal shift delamination compared with PbSn, AuSn solder previously used usually. Furthermore, the glass solder doesn't need fiber metalization and this enables low cost fabrication. However, the glass soldering is high temperature process over 35$0^{\circ}C$ and the convex shape after solidification due to surface tension causes the stress concentration on optical fiber. The stress concentration on the optical fiber increases the optical insertion loss and possibility of crack formation. The shape of glass solder was designed referring to 2-D Axi-symmetric FEM simulation. To test the mechanical reliability, mechanical vibration test and shock test were done according to Telcorida GR-468-Core protocol. After each test, the optical loss of the stress distributed fiber assembly didn't exceed 0.5 dB, which passes the test.

  • Physiological characteristics such as specific productivity, morphology of Streptomyces cells Immobilized on celite beads, and operational stability at different dilution rates were investigated in continuous immobilized-cell cultures for the production of kasugamycin. At a dilution rate (D) of 0.05 $h^{-1}$, a relatively high specific productivity was attained and the loss of cell-loaded beads was negligible. At D=0.1 $h^{-1}$, a higher specific productivity and cell concentration could be obtained, resulting in a significantly improved volumetric kasugamycin productivity. However, no stable operation could be maintained due to a significant loss of cell-loaded beads from the reactor that was caused by their fluffy morphology developed in the later stage. At D=0.2 $h^{-1}$, the production of kasugamycin and cell growth were observed to be severely inhibited by the high concentration of residual maltose.

  • A simple bimodal model has been developed to analyze charged particle coagulation by modifying previously suggested bimdal model for evolution of particle generation and growth. In the present model, two monodisperse modes are used and 40 charge nodes are assigned to each mode to account both change of the particle size and charge distribution. In addition, we also implemented the effect of electrostatic dispersion loss in the present model. Based on the developed model, we analyzed coagulation of asymmetric bipolar charged particles by computing evolutions of particle number concentration, geometric mean diameter of particles, charge asymmetric ratio and geometric standard deviation of particle size distribution for various initial charge asymmetric ratios. The number concentration of asymmetric bipolar charged particles decreases faster than that of neutral particles but that does not give faster growth of particles since the electrostatic dispersion loss overwhelms particle growth by coagulation.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the effect of essential oil (EO) from Artemisia Princeps Pampanini on quality of tomato during storage. EO was extracted by steam distillation and diluted by 1 and 2%. Total phenolic contents and antioxidative activities of EO were analyzed. Tomato was packaged corrugated box covered with polypropylene (PP) film containing EO (1 and 2%) and then stored at room temperature for 10 days. During storage, appearance, weight loss rate, soluble solid contents, pH and a (redness) value were measured for tomato. Total phenolic contents of EO increased in a dose-dependence. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities also showed a concentration-dependent increase. The weight loss rate was lowest using the film packaged in 1% EO. During the storage period, soluble solid contents and pH increased in all treatments. The a value increased regardless of EO concentration in films. Especially, tomato packaged with EO film showed a lower a value than non EO-packaged ones. This result suggests that application of EO to film is effective for tomato quality preservation.
