A Numerical Study on Effect of Radiative Heat Loss on Extinction of Hydrogen Diffusion Flames at High Pressure (고압하에서 수소 확산화염의 소염에 미치는 복사 열손실 효과에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • Extinction characteristics of hydrogen-air diffusion flames at various pressures are investigated numerically by adopting counterflow flame configuration as a model flamelet. Especially, effect of radiative heat loss on flame extinction is emphasized. Only gas-phase radiation is considered here and it is assumed that $H_2O$ is the only radiating species. Radiation term depends on flame thickness, temperature, $H_2O$ concentration, and pressure. From the calculated flame structures at various pressures, flame thickness decreases with pressure, but its gradient decreases at high pressure. Flame temperature and mole fraction of $H_2O$ increase slightly with pressure. Accordingly, as pressure increases, radiative heat loss becomes dominant. When radiative heat loss is considered, radiation-induced extinction is observed at low strain rate in addition to transport-induced extinction. As pressure increases, flammable region, where flame is sustained, shifts to the high-temperature region and then, shrunk to the point on the coordinate plane of flame temperature and strain rate. The present numerical results show that radiative heat loss can reduce the operating range of a combustor significantly.

The Differences in Smartphone Addiction Symptom between Highly Addicted and Non-addicted College Students (스마트폰 고중독 대학생과 비중독 대학생의 중독증후군 차이)

  • Purpose: This survey was to investigate the differences in smartphone addiction symptoms by the level of addiction among college students in S. Korea. Methods: Two hundred and thirteen university students survey data was collected from December 5th to 9th of 2011 using Smartphone Addiction Scale. 25.3% (n=54) of total respondents were categorized as highly addicted and 28.17% (n=60) were as non-addicted group. Results: There were significant differences in total addiction symptom scores, daily life disorders, loss of self control, pathological concentration, and compulsive symptoms between two groups. There were significantly differences in total addiction symptoms, daily life disorders, loss of self control, pathological concentration, and compulsive symptoms between two groups. Highly addicted group were significantly higher in total addiction symptom scores (3.26 times), daily life disorders (4.96 times), loss of self control (3.07 times), pathological concentration (3.07 times), and compulsive symptoms (2.86 times) compared to non-addicted one. Highly addicted group had significantly higher daily usages of smartphone and were more satisfied with smartphone than non-addicted group. The purpose to use was related to academic works rather than games or entertainment. However satisfaction on academic achievement was very low. Conclusion: The smartphone addicted symptoms related to academic works were significantly high in highly addicted college students so that it disturbed their daily life and psycho-social health in general. It is clear that the highly addicted college students need urgent distinctive interventions such as creative academic guides.

A Study on the Relationships of the Menstrual Blood Loss, Iron Nutriture, and the Pregnancy History in Married Korean Women (한국인(韓國人) 기혼여성(旣婚女性)의 출산역(出産歷)에 따른 월경혈손실양(月經血損失量) 변화(變化)와 철분영양상태(鐵分營養狀態)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • The aim of this study was to observe the relationships between the amount of menstrual blood loss (MBL) and age, parity, number of pregnancy and induced abortion, and the iron nutriture in married Korean women. Fifty-one healthy women aged 26 to 48 years were tested for their MBL, hemoglobin(Hb) concentration, hematocrit (Hct) value, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), serum iron and ferritin concentrations. The results of this study are summarized as follows : 1) The mean value and standard error of mean of the MBL was $32.0{\pm}3.94ml$, and the range of MBL was 3.8-127.2 ml for total subjects. Maximum number (23.5%) of the subjects fell in the group with MBL of 10-l9ml, while 17.7% showed MBL above 50m1. 2) There were no statistically significant differences on the mean amount of MBL between the age groups 25-48 years. 3) The mean amount of MBL in 1-2 and 3-4 para groups were 28.5 and 36.1 ml, respectively, but the difference between two groups was not significant 4) It was observed that the mean amount of MBL was gradually decreased as the number of pregnancy and induced abortion were increased, but the significance was not observed. 5) The mean values of Hb concentration, MCHC and serum iron concentration were slightly decreased in subjects with MBL of more than 50ml but the statistical significance was not observed. The mean of Hct value was not influenced by the amount of MBL. While serum ferritin concentrations were markedly decreased and the prevalence rate of anemia was markedly increased as the amount of MBL was increased. There was significant difference (P<0.05) between the mean amount of MBL with respect to the serum ferritin concentration.

Effects of Salt Concentration in Soybean Sauce on the Physicochemical Properties of Pre-rigor Ground Hanwoo Muscle

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of salt concentration in soybean sauce (ganjang) on pre-rigor ground Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) muscle. Although adding soybean sauce reduced pH of pre-rigor Hanwoo muscle, it improved the water holding capacity (WHC), cooking loss, total protein solubility, myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI), 2-thiobar-bituric acid (TBA) values, and textural properties by increasing salt concentration in the soybean sauce. In particular, adding soybean sauce inhibited lipid oxidation despite increasing salt concentration. An increased salt concentration in the soybean sauce in pre-rigor Hanwoo muscle tended to make the meat have lower lightness and higher redness and yellowness values. Although soybean sauce had a significantly lower pre-rigor salting effect than sodium chloride in terms of cooking loss and total protein solubility (p<0.05), soybean sauce improved myofibrillar fragmentation and lipid oxidation when compared with sodium chloride. Furthermore, no significant differences in textural properties were observed between adding soybean sauce and sodium chloride at the same salt concentrations. Therefore, soybean sauce can be a functional curing material for pre-rigor muscle.

A Study on Softening Finish of Cotton Fabric using Cellulase (셀루라아제에 의한 면직물의 유연가공에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the softening effect of cellulase-treated cotton fabric and the damage on the fabric which is accompanied by the treatemnt. Cotton fabric is treated with cellulase under various concentrations and time, and the weight loss, hand values (by KES), surface characteristics, moisture regain, tensile strength, copper number and intrinsic viscosity of the treated samples and untreated samples have been compared. The results are as follows: 1. The weight loss of cotton fabric increased as the concentration of cellulase and the treating time increased. 2. The enzyme treatment had little effect on the stiffness of the treated samples but anti- drape stiffness decreased for the treated samples. Fullness and softness of the treated samples increased and crispness decreased with the lowest level reaching after two hours of the treatment for all concentrations. Scrooping feeling of the treated samples increased and flexibility with soft feeling increased as the treating time and the concentration of cellulase increased. 3. Moisture regain of the samples decreased as the treating time and the concentration of the enzyme increased and the treated fabric showed cracks on the fiber surface, and much surface fibers on the fabric have been removed after the treatment. 4. Tensile strength of the samples decreased as the treating time and as the concentration of cellulase increased, and the copper number increased while the intrinsic viscosity decreased as the treating time increased, but cellulase concentration had a little effect.

Study on Sludge Thickening with Mesh is Used as Filtration Msdia (여과분리재를 이용한 슬러지 농축에 관한 연구)

  • For a membrane bio-reactor, it is possible to fillet and separate activated sludge and effluent by head loss of centimeters, if non-woven fabric material is used as titration media. However, if non-woven fabric material is used to thicken high-concentration sludge, excessive sludge attachment causes the rapid decrease of flux. Mesh with fore sizes of $100{\mu}m,\;150{\mu}m,\;and\;200{\mu}m$ allows for easy separation of attached sludge. This study examined the possibility of mesh as filtration media. Existing close-flow filtration process, which requires maintaining sludge movement, makes It difficult to obtain high thickening rate. With a view of complementing this weakness, this study has made an experimental examination on how high-concentration sludge (about 3,000mg/L to 10,000mg/L) will be filtered and thickened when mesh module is submersed in the bio-reactor. Effluent flowed from the bottom of the bio-reactor by head loss of 65cm. In case of pore size of $100{\mu}m$, SS showed high recovery of 80% to 96%; therefore, it has been decided that mesh can be used as filtration media. Filtration lasted for more than 9 hours, until sludge with 9,000mg/L in MLSS concentration was thickened 9 times as dense. In the range from 3,610mg/L to 9,060mg/L in MLSS concentration, it was possible to obtain effluent with less than 2mg/L in MLSS concentration within 10 minutes.

Effects of the Structure of Weight Loss Accelerating Agents on the Weight Loss in Alkaline Hydrolysis of PET Fibers (감량촉진제의 구조에 따른 PET섬유의 감량가공효과)

  • Weight loss accelerating agents, TDACW and TTAMW were prepared by adding water to n-tetradecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride(TDAC) and n-tetradecyltrimethylammonium methyl sulfate(TTAM) synthesized in our lab. On weight loss finishing of PET fiber with NaOH and TDACW or TTAMW, TDACW showed much more weight loss than TTAMW. Optimum concentration was about $8g/{\ell}$, treatment time 60~90min and treatment bath ratio 1:40~1:50. Density and crystallinity increased with weight loss and tensile strength decreased with weight loss. From the reaction mechanism of weight loss accelerating agent and PET fiber, weight loss accelerating agent was proved to function as a catalyst and the surface structures of PET fibers treated with weight loss accelerating agent were characterized with SEM.

  • The analysis of engineering data using neural network based on supervised learning has been utilized in various engineering fields such as optimization of chemical engineering process, concentration prediction of particulate matter pollution, prediction of thermodynamic phase equilibria, and prediction of physical properties for transport phenomena system. The supervised learning requires training data, and the performance of the supervised learning is affected by the composition and the configurations of the given training data. Among the frequently observed engineering data, the data is given in log-scale such as length of DNA, concentration of analytes, etc. In this study, for widely distributed log-scaled training data of virtual 100×100 images, available loss functions were quantitatively evaluated in terms of (i) confusion matrix, (ii) maximum relative error and (iii) mean relative error. As a result, the loss functions of mean-absolute-percentage-error and mean-squared-logarithmic-error were the optimal functions for the log-scaled training data. Furthermore, we figured out that uniformly selected training data lead to the best prediction performance. The optimal loss functions and method for how to compose training data studied in this work would be applied to engineering problems such as evaluating DNA length, analyzing biomolecules, predicting concentration of colloidal suspension.

On the Effect of Tube Attenuation on Measuring Water Vapor Flux Using a Closed-path Hygrometer (폐회로 습도계를 이용한 수증기 플럭스 관측시관의 감쇠 효과에 관하여)

  • Eddy covariance method is widely used in measuring vertical fluxes of mass and energy between the atmosphere and the biosphere. In this method, scalar concentration is measured with either open-path or closed-path sensors. For the latter, fluctuations of scalar concentration are attenuated as the sample travels through a long tube, resulting in flux loss. To quantify this tube attenuation, water vapor concentrations measured with both closed-path and open-path sensors were analyzed. Our statistical analysis showed that the power spectral density obtained from the closed-path sensor was different from that from the open-path sensor in the frequency range of > 0.5 Hz. The loss of water vapor flux due to tube attenuation was < 5% during midday. At nighttime, however, the flux loss increased significantly because of the low wind speeds and the weak turbulence sources. Theoretical calculation for the tube attenuation showed a small bias in high frequency range probably because of the interaction of sticky water vapor with a tube wall.

Stability of Ascorbic Acid in the Catechin Solution (Catechin용액 중에서 Ascorbic acid의 안정성)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the stability of ascorbic acid (AsA) in the mixed solution of AsA and catechin according to the content changes of AsA and catechin under boiling, and for the respective concentration and pH. The loss of AsA was most for 10 minutes of boiling and accelerated by the mixture of catechin, but the loss was less in the high mixture rate than in the low the loss of catechin most for 10 minutes of boiling, also as the concentration of AsA becomes higher but that of cathchin lower, and as that of AsA lower but that of catechin higher, the loss of catechin becomes less moreover in the case of the low content ratio of catechin, the stability of AsA was better in order of the pH 4, pH 5, pH 6, namely as the pH increased, but in the case of the high better in order of the pH 6, pH 5, pH 4, that is as in decreased.
