  • This research presented a numerical and experimental study on the seismic performance of first-generation base-isolated and fixed-base nuclear power plants (NPP). Three types of the base isolation system were applied to rehabilitate the first-generation nuclear power plants: frictional pendulum (FP), high-damping rubber (HDR) and lead-rubber (LR) base isolation. Also, an Excel program was proposed for the design of the abovementioned base isolators in accordance with UBC 97 and the Japan Society of Base Isolation Regulation. The seismic assessment was performed using the pushover and nonlinear time history analysis methods in accordance with the FEMA 356 regulation. To validate the adequacy of the proposed design procedure, two small-scale NPPs were constructed at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's structural laboratory and subjected to a pushover test for two different base conditions, fixed and HDR-isolated base. The results showed that base-isolated structures achieved adequate seismic performance compared with the fixed-base one, and all three isolators led to a significant reduction in the containment's tension, overturning moment and base shear.

  • In this study, we aimed to clarify the wettability and anisotropic flow characteristics of rice leaves as a basic study for engineering applications of anisotropic flow characteristics of rice leaf surface. To investigate the surface structure of rice leaf, the micro grooves and asperities of rice leaves were analyzed and quantified by scanning electron microscope, Confocal laser scanning microscopy, and stylus profilometer. The analysis of the structure of rice leaf surface confirmed that asymmetrical cone - like protrusions in leaf veins were inclined toward the leaf tip. The static contact angle test showed that the contact angle at the midline vein or leaf vein location where the micropapilla is concentrated is about $20^{\circ}$ higher than the leaf blade position. The contact angles of fresh and dried rice leave were also compared. The dried rice leaves showed a contact angle of about $5^{\circ}$ to $15^{\circ}$ higher than that of fresh leaves, suggesting that the volume of the protrusions decreased as the water was removed, thus reducing the contact area with the droplet. In the contact angle history test the hysteresis in the leaf tip direction was found to be much lower than that in the leaf petiole direction. This results can be explained that asymmetrical cone - like protrusions had a significant effect on the droplet flow characteristics through contact angle hysteresis experiment.

  • An experimental study is performed to analyze flow structures behind a local suction/blowing in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer, The local forcing is given to the boundary layer flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot at the wall. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness is about $Re_{\theta}=1700$. The effects of local forcing are scrutinized by altering the forcing frequency $(0.011{\leq}f^+{\leq}0.044)$. The forcing amplitude is fixed at $A_0=0.4$. It is found that a small local forcing reduces the skin friction, and this reduction increases with the forcing frequency. A phase-averaging technique is employed to capture the coherent structures. Velocity signals are decomposed into a periodic part and a fluctuating part. An organized spanwise vortical structure is generated by the local forcing. The larger reduction of skin friction for the higher forcing frequencies is attributed to the diminished adverse effect of the secondary vortex. An investigation of the random fluctuation components reveals that turbulent energy is concentrated near the center of vortical structures.

  • The development of automated container terminal has been a hot issue for recent years. It's very natural because it's very important how many containers, how soon, and how precisely a container terminal can treat. A crane treats a very heavy container, maybe, no less than 20∼40 tons, thus most cranes use ropes to take up and land containers. But rope causes the sway of a container and this phenomenon is not avoided. On the ground of this, in most case how much skillful a driver is may affect the productivity of a yard or quay crane. Thus many researches have been concentrated on the development of the control algorithm for a crane which may be useful and robust enough to drive a crane without any human driver. Authors of this paper also are interested in this kind of research but we have been much more interested for years in the development of a mechanical structure which may cause much less sway than the existing cranes do. In this paper, we may introduce the basic structure of the developed anti-sway system.

  • The magnetic alloys of Cu-Fe ($Cu_{50}Fe_{50},\;Cu_{80}Fe_{20}\;and\;Cu_{90}Fe_{10}$) were prepared by a mechanical alloying method and their structural and magnetic behaviors were examined by X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectra. The magnetization curves did not distinctly show the saturation at 70 kOe for the concentrated alloys of $Cu_{80}Fe_{20}\;and\;Cu_{90}Fe_{10}$. The Mossbauer spectrum of $Cu_{80}Fe_{20}$ at room temperature shows one Lorentzian line of the paramagnetic phase, whereas the Mossbauer spectrum of $Cu_{90}Fe_{10}$ consists of sextet Lorentzian line at room temperature and a centered doublet line. The Mossbauer spectra of $Cu_{90}Fe_{10}$ measured in the temperature ranges from 13 to 295 K, implies that $Cu_{90}Fe_{10}$ to consists of two magnetic phases. One superimposed sextet corresponds to the ferromagnetic iron in Cu and the other one indicates the superparamagnetic iron rich phase.

  • The spray plume characteristics of liquid water jet injected into subsonic cross-flow at 42 m/s were experimentally investigated. Nozzle has a 1.0 m diameter and L/D=5. Droplet sizes, velocities, volume flux were measured at each downstream area of the injector exit using phase Doppler particle anemometry. Measuring probe position is moved with 3-way transversing machine. Experimental results indicate that SMD is varied from 75 to $120{\mu}m$ distribution and it is uncertain layer structure. SMD peaks at the top of the spray plume. This phenomenon is related to the momentum exchange between column waves and cross-flow stream. Droplet vector velocities were varied from 11.5 to 33 m/s. A higher-velocity region can be identified in down edge region at Z/D : 40, 70 and 100. Lower-velocity region were observed on bottom position of the spray plume. Volume flux is a criterion to the droplet concentration. All volume flux distribution has a same structure that continuously decreases from the center region to the edge of the plume. Z/D : 20 is spatially less concentrated than in Z/D : 100.

  • A concentric braced steel frame is a very efficient structural system because it requires relatively smaller amount of materials to resist lateral forces. However, primarily developed as a structural system to resist wind loads based on an assumption that the structure behaves elastically, a concentric braced frame possibly experiences the deterioration in energy dissipation after brace buckling and the brittle failure of braces and connections when earthquake loads cause inelastic behavior. Consequently, plastic deformation is concentrated in the floor where brace buckling occurs first, which can lead to the rupture of the structure. This study suggests reinforcing H-shaped braces with non-welded cold-formed stiffeners to restrain flexure and buckling and resist tensile force and compressive force equally. Weak-axis reinforcing members (2 pieces) developed from those suggested in previous studies (4 pieces) were used to reinforce the H-shaped braces in an inverted V-type braced frame. Monotonic loading tests, finite element analysis and cyclic loading tests were carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the reinforced braces and frames. The reinforced braces satisfied the AISC requirement. The reinforcement suggested in this study is expected to prevent the rupture of beams caused by the unbalanced resistance of the braces.

  • This treatise makes clear not only a structural methodology of 'the conceptual blending theory' using in a linguistics could be applied to the similar process in a hybrid design but also both methods include the same meaning construction in the sense of a mutual educational system. Both methods have something in common that they are fundamentally focused on a metaphorical expression which implies poetic messages to be concentrated on a formal structure. Therefore, the purpose of this treatise is to examine the structural characteristics in the hybrid design in order to analyze the rhetorical expressions(metaphor, allegory) as symbols of communication. One of the those is intertextuality that expresses metaphorically by blending and borrowing codes and another is hypertextual space where various texts twines around each other making brand-new and diverse organizations, as the combined allegory with a number of hidden expression. Ultimately, it is important that this approach could verify whether it deals the illogical present state of a spacial form or structure with a kind of mechanism of a 'conceptual blending theory' or not.

  • The formation of thylakoid membrane proteins and changes in the chloroplast ultrastructure of ginseng leaf were investigated as a function of time following the leaf emergence. The leaf chloroplast obtained just after the leaf emergence showed short rod-like thylakoids which were connected and arranged in 3~4 layers along the longitudinal axis of the chloroplast. The 10 DAE (days after emergence) chloroplast started to form grana structure. The typical grana structure was observed 17 DAE, and the grana was fully developed 28 DAE. The membrane proteins obtained from just after emerging leaf were separated into many minor bands indicating no CP-complex formation yet. LHC II was detected after 10 days. CP 47 and CP 43 were detected after 17 days. After 28 days, the PS I and PS II proteins were distinctly separated into CP 1, LHC II, CP 47, CP 43, CP 29, CP 27+24. Thus, the appearance of the light harvesting protein, LHC II, which was concentrated in grana stacks, was consis tent in time with the formation of grana stacks 17 DAE. Key words Chloroplast ultrastructure, grana, CP-complex, LHC II.

  • Indoor gardens tailored to suit individual tastes offer a place to enjoy plants and to relax to city dwellers to relieve stress from city life. However, there are technical issues to build such indoor gardens. To offer solutions to technical issues, this study aims to analyze development phases of indoor garden-related technologies by studying available patents in detail. Also, the study aims to understand current status and future direction of technologies by examining technological trends for introduction of indoor gardens. Brainstorming method was used to understand technology trends and as a result, two groups were identified for technical features of indoor gardens: indoor greening technology and rest area for users. An analysis on selected patents showed that the number of patents increased until 2010 and declined gradually afterwards. Korea ranked the highest in the number of patents grant followed by USA, Japan and Europe. Similar order was observed with the number of patents granted by nationality of applicants. The number of patents granted by nationality was the highest for Korean nationals. For indoor greening technologies, patents related to structure from 2007 were mostly concentrated in the areas of irrigation control and environment control for plants and vegetation. For rest area related technologies, patent related to structure showed a repetitive pattern of increasing and decreasing, but overall, on downtrend. For further development and dissemination of indoor gardening technology, more R&D work is needed with focus on environmental control technology for designing suitable environment for both human and plant.
