Application of Iranian Medicinal Plants to the Treatment of Liver Injury.

  • Matricaria Chammomillal L., Foemiculum Vulgare mill, and Plantago Psylium L. have been screened for their hepato protective activities against liver damge induced by $CCl_4$ intoxication in mice. Hydroalcoholic extractions (2:8) of herbal drugs were concentrated in vacuo and concentrated crude extracts of Matrica Chammomilla L. and Foeniculum Vulgare mill were orally administered at doses of 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg, and 800 mg/kg. Plantago Psyllium was given at doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg. Liver protective activities of these herbs were determined after administration of $CCl_4$ Liver size, serum enzyme activities, sleeping time, and histopatology of the liver were examined one hour after administration of $CCl_4$. ALT and AST activities, liver weight and sleeping time decreased in groups that received 400 mg/kg of Matricaria Chammomilla L. or Foeniculum Vulgare. Histological investigation showed significant increase in hepatic cell regeneration and reduction in liver injury. The group that received 100 mg/kg Plantago Psylium showed liver protection but protection was not significant in other doses.

농후 발효유에 의한 여대생의 변비개선 효과 (Effect of Drinking Fermented Milk on the Improvement of Defecation in Constipated Female Students)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect d concentrated fermented milk on the improvement of defecation in female students with constipation. This yogurt was fermented with Bifidobacterium, L. acidophilus, and S. thermophilus and supplemented with oligosaccharides, dietary fiber, and yeast and mushroom extracts. 44 female students with constipation were sampled as subjects and fed 150ml fermented milk per day for 2 weeks period. After each defecation, the subjects were examined for the status of stool evacuation by questionnaires. The frequency of stool evacuation, fecal amount, time spending for evacuation, fecal color and shape, and refreshing feeling after evacuation were remarkably improved after ingestion of fermented milk for 2 weeks. These effects were greater in the heavy constipation group than in the mild group. The fecal odor did rot decrease significantly after 2 weeks of intake of fermented milk, but the odor thended to decrease after the intake of fermented milk These results indicated that the ingestion of concentrated fermented milk is effective to improve the constipation.

대나무 열수추출물의 화학적 특성 (Chemical Properties of Hot Water Extracts from Bamboos(Phyllostuhys sp.))

  • 대나무 줄기 및 잎의 열수추출물의 영양학적 가치를 검토코자 화학성분을 분석하였다. 대나무 줄기와 잎 추출물의 고형분은 줄기가 3.0-3.5%, 잎이 2.6-2.9%로 줄기에서 더 높은 함량을 보였고, 조단백질은 0.56-0.69% 범위로 왕대의 줄기와 잎 추출물에서 모두 0.69%로 가장 높은 함량을 보였으며, 조지방은 0.28-0.58% 범위였는데, 솜대의 밀이 0.58%로 가장 높은 함량을 나타내었다. 무기성분의 함량은 K, P, Mg 순으로 높았으며 K와 P의 함량은 왕대의 줄기 추출물이 각각 658.7, 94.0mg%로 가장 높았는데, 특히 K의 함량은 모든 죽종의 줄기 추출물에 잎 추출물에 비해 현저히 높은 함량을 보였다. Mg은 맹종국줄기 21.2mg%, 솜대줄기 13.5 mg%, 왕대줄기 13.3mg%이고, 맹종죽잎 25.3mg%, 솜댓잎 23.0mg%, 왕댓잎 35.0mg%로 해당 죽종의 줄기 추출물이 잎 추출물에 비해 낮은 함량을 보였다. 추출물의 유리당 함량은 sucrose가 맹종죽줄기에서 1.1%, fructose는 솜대줄기에서 0.51%, glucose는 왕대줄기에서 0.6%의 함량으로 가장높았는데 전체적으로 줄기 추출물이 밀 추출물에 비해 높은 함량을 보였다. 추출물들의 유기산 함량은 malic acid 및 acetic acid가 높게 나타났으며, 왕대 줄기에서 magic acid 44.2m7% 및 acetic acid 54.0mg%로 가장 높은 함량을 보였다. 총아미노산 함량은 줄기 추출물에서는 aspartic acid가 가장 높은 함량을 보였는데, 왕대 42.2mg%, 솜대 39.9mg%, 맹종죽 34.6mg% 순이었다. 잎 추출물에서는 glutamic acid의 함량이 가장 높았으며 맹종죽 19.3mg%, 왕대 18.5mg%, 솜대 15.7mg% 순이었다.

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)에서는 3종(種)의 잎담배 추출액(抽出液)을 시료(試料)로 하여 동결농축(凍結濃縮)에 관(關)한 기초실험(基礎實驗)으로서 시료용액(試料溶液)의 농도(濃度)와 빙점(氷點)과의 관계(關係), 점도(粘度)와 농도(濃度)와 온도(溫度)와의 관계(關係) 및 빙결정(氷結晶)의 형상(形狀)을 측정(測定)한 결과, 다음과 같은 결론(結論)을 얻었다. 1. 빙점(氷點) $t_m(^{\circ}C)$과 농도(濃度) X(wt%)와의 관계식(關係式)은 아래와 같다. $t_m=-{\frac{18.6X}{170-{\frac{X}{100}}(170+18)}}$ 2. 점도(粘度) ${\mu}(c{\cdot}p)$와 온도(溫度) T(K)와 농도(濃度) X(wt%)의 관계(關係)는 아래식과 같다. $log_{10{\mu}}={\frac{1585}{T}}+2.11{\frac{X}{100-X}}-5.50$ 3. 고농도(高濃度)의 용액(溶液)에서 얇은 수지상형(樹枝狀形)의 빙결정(氷結晶), 저농도용액(低濃度溶液)에서 두꺼운 판상형(板狀形)의 빙결정(氷結晶)이 생성(生成)되었다.

석류 추출물의 항산화 작용 (Anti-oxidant Activities of Punica granatum Extracts)

  • 강한 천연 생리활성물질인 폴리페놀과 탄닌을 다량 함유한 석류를 노화방지제 및 기능성화장품의 화장품 원료로 이용할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고자, 과즙과 과피 및 종자유로 나누어 분리추출한 후, DPPH radical과 superoxide의 소거작용, 세포내 $H_2O_2$와 hydroperoxide 및 superoxide 생성 억제작용에 미치는 영향에 관하여 실험하여 항산화 작용을 비교 평가하였다. 석류과피 메탄올 추출액은 전반적으로 가장 유의성 있는 항산화 작용을 보였다. 자체적인 항산화 작용뿐만 아니라 세포내에서 free radical이 생성되는 것을 억제하는 작용도 있는 것으로 여겨지며, 석류과즙 농축액은 free radical을 소거하는 항산화 작용이 있으며, 또한 석류 종자유는 강한 hydroperoxide 생성 억제효과를 나타내어, 특히 hydroxy기를 가진 readical의 생성을 억제하는데 효과가 있는 것으로 사료된다. 이상과 같은 결과로 보아, 석류의 과즙보다는 과피의 추출물이 항산화 작용이 더 뛰어난 것을 알 수 있었으므로 피부미용에 관련된 건강보조식품 개발시 과피성분을 함유한 추출물을 원료로 사용하는 것이 효과적이라고 사료되며, 특히 피부 주름 방지제 등과 같은 기능성 화장품을 개발하고자 할 때는 석류 종자유를 화장품 원료로 하여 개발하는 것이 더 효과적이라고 사료된다.

  • Dyeing properties of the colorants extracted from pomegranate hull on hair were investigated to study its efficay of natural hair coloring dye. Effect of dyeing condition and mordanting on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. In addition, tensile strength retention is measured and the surface of the hair was observed by SEM. The water extracted pomegranate hull was concentrated and freeze-dried for preparing colorant powders. It was considered that ionic bonding was involved in the adsorption of pomegranate colorants to hair. Pomegranate hull colorants produced greyish brown colors on hair and the hair mordanted with Fe showed dark brown color. Mordant except Fe did not significantly increased dye uptake. Mordant except Cu increased light fastness, mordant except Cr increased washing fastness. SEM to observe the hair is damaged by ultraviolet light and cleaning. This is consistent with the results of tensile strength retention. From the results of colorfastness th washing and light, it was concluded that colorants from pomegranate hull can be need as a semi-permanent natural hair coloring dye.

Hypoglycemic Effect of Padina arborescens Extract in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Mice

  • This study investigated the hypoglycemic effect of the Padina arborescens extract in STZ-induced diabetic mice. Freeze-dried Padina arborescens were extracted with 80% methanol and concentrated for use in this study. The hypoglycemic effect was determined by inhibitory activities against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and ${\alpha}$-amylase as well as the alleviation of postprandial blood glucose level. Padina arborescens extracts showed higher inhibitory activities than acarbose, a positive control against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and ${\alpha}$-amylase. The $IC_{50}$ values of Padina arborescens extracts against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and ${\alpha}$-amylase were 0.26 and 0.23 mg/mL, respectively, which evidenced as more effective than observed with acarbose. The increase of postprandial blood glucose levels were significantly suppressed in the Padina arborescens extract administered group than the control group in the streptozotocin induced diabetic mice. Furthermore, the area under the curve (AUC) was significantly lowered via Padina arborescens extract administration in diabetic mice (p 0.05). These results indicated that the Padina arborescens extract might be used as an inhibitor of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and ${\alpha}$-amylase and delay absorption of dietary carbohydrates.

한국산(韓國産) 담자균류(澹子菌類)의 항암성분(抗癌咸分)에 관한 연구(硏究)( II ) -치마버섯과 목이버섯의 항암성분(抗癌成分)- (Studies on the Antitumor Components of Korean Basidiomycetes(II) -Antitumor Components of Schizophyllum commune and Auricularia auricula-judae-)

  • To investigate antitumor components of Korean higher fungi, the carpophores of Schizophyllum commune and Auricularia auricula-judae collected in Kyeong Buk Province were extracted with hot water or 0.1N-NaOH solution. The concentrated extracts were precipitated by addition of ethanol, and the precipitates were purified by dialyzing through visking tube and polysaccharide fractions were obtained. They were found to show antitumor activity against sarcoma 180 implanted in mice. Especially, the inhibition ratio of the extract of Auricularia adicula-judae was 90.8% in the doses of 100mg/kg/day for the period of ten days. The tumor in five of the eight mice was completely regressed. The components of these aqueous extracts were found to be polysaccharide and protein. The hydrolysis of the respective polysaccharide yielded four monosaccharides. After hydrolysis of the protein fraction, 15 amino acids were identified in the respective fraction of S. commune and A. auricula-judae.

EROD-microbioassay에 의한 학교 소각로 잔재 중 다이옥신 유사물질의 측정 (Determination of Dioxin-like Components in the School Waste Incinerator Residues by EROD-microbioassay)

  • There are among the most relevant toxic emissions from incinerators such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Induction of cytochrome P4501A1 catalyzed 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase(EROD) activity in mammalian cell culture(EROD bioassay) is thought to be a selective and sensitive parameter used for the quantification of dioxin-like components. In this study, the toxic emissions from several school waste incinerators were evaluated by determination of CYPIA catalytic activity and cytotoxicity using cell culture microbioassay. The incinerator residue and soil samples were collected from the schools located in Kyunggi province from April to June 1999. The samples were extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus using toluene for 20 hours. In order to clean-up, concentrated crude extracts were applied to basic alumina column. The EROD activities of extracts in the H4IIE cells were from 1.91$\pm$0.32 ng-TEQ/g to 24.54$\pm$3.48 ng-TEQ/g of biochemical-TEQ value. In soil samples, CYP1A catalytic activity was 0.09~0.64 ng-TEQ/g. EROD bioassay, seems to be a useful short-term bioassay when information about the biological response of complex environmental samples is needed. Although further study is needed, these results indicate that the potent toxic emissions are produced from school waste semi-incinerators.

쑥 추출물의 염색성 및 항균성 (The Dyeability and Antimicrobial Activity of Artemisia princeps Extracts)

  • The extracts drawn out from Artemisia princeps by water was concentrated. Using this concentrate the silk and the cotton fabrics were dyed, and they were measured with the K/S value, surface color and mordant quantity in order to evaluate the dyeability and the antimicrobial activity. The results are as follows; 1. The K/S value of the silk fabric was much higher than that of the cotton fabric. And the color yield of the dyed silk fabric was most efficient for the premordanting method. 2. The surface colors on the dyed fabric depended heavily upon mordants used or mordanting methods. For all cases, the value of the dyed fabric was generally dark. For the Cr-mordant among various mordants, the chroma produced clear and the color difference was distinct when using the Fe-mordant. 3. On the other hand the amount of absorbed mordant in the silk fabric was larger than that of the cotton fabric. And the Cu-mordant was most efficient. 4. The color fastness was significantly improved when mordants were added. Cr-mordant improved best in all of the dry cleaning, wet cleaning and perspiration fastness. Iron and abrasion fastness showed over 4-5 grade regardless of any mordant. And light fastness was best in Cu-mordant. 5. The Cu-mordant showed the greatest antimicrobial activity in both of mordant treat silk and cotton fabrics.
