This paper deals with numerical analysis of static and dynamic wind effects on civil engineering structures. Aeroelastic analysis becomes a prime criterion to be confirmed during the structural design because the long-span suspension bridges are prone to the aerodynamic instabilities caused by wind. If the wind velocity exceeds the critical velocity that the bridge can withstand, then the bridge fails due to the phenomenon of flutter. The aeroelastic simulation is carried out using both Computational Fluid Dynamic(CFD) and Computational Structural Dynamic(SCD) schemes.
A novel adaptive mesh refinement(AMR) strategy based on the Moment-of-Fluid(MOF) method for volume-tracking dynamic interface computation is presented. The Moment-of-Fluid method is a new interface reconstruction and volume advection method using volume fraction as well as material centroid. The adaptive mesh refinement is performed based on the error indicator, the deviation of the actual centroid obtained by interface reconstruction from the reference centroids given by moment advection process. Using the AMR-MOF method, the accuracy of volume-tracking computation with evolving interfaces is improved significantly compared to other published results.
The equilibrium molecular-dynamic simulations have been performed to estimate the properties of the three kinds of fluids confined between two plates that are separated by 1.086 nm; included in the statical properties are the density distribution and the static structure, and the autocorrelation velocity function in the dynamic property. Three kinds of fluids considered in this study are the Lennard-Jones fluid, water and aqueous sodium-chloride solution. The water molecules are modeled by using the SPC/E model and the ions by the charged Lennard-Jones particle model. To treat the water molecules, we combined the quaternion coordinates with Euler angles. We also proposed a plausible algorithm to assign the initial position and direction of molecules. The influence of polarization of water molecules as well as the presence of ions in the solution on the properties will be addressed in this study. In addition, we performed the non-equilibrium molecular-dynamic simulation to compute the flow velocity for the case with the gravitational force acting on molecules.
The fluid induced vibration (FIV) phenomena of a 2-D.O.F airfoil system have been investigated in low Reynolds number incompressible flow region. Unsteady flows with viscosity are computed using two-dimensional incompressible Navier-stokes code. To validate developed Navier-Stokes code, steady and unsteady flow fields around airfoil are analyzed. The present fluid/structure interaction analysis is based on the most accurate computational approach with computational fluid dynamics (CSD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) techniques. The highly nonlinear fluid/structure interaction phenomena due to severe flow separations have been analyzed fur the low Reynolds region (R$_{N}$ =500~5000) that has a dominancy of flow viscosity. The effect of R$_{N}$ on the fluid/structure coupled vibration instability of 2-DOF airfoil system is presented and the effect of initial angle of attack on the dynamic instability are also shown.own.
The design of airfoil had practiced by repeat tests in its first stage, though an airfoil has as been designed based on simulations according to techniques of computational fluid dynamics. Here, using of traditional optimization is unsuitable because a state of flux is hypersensitive to the shape of airfoil. Therefore the paper optimized the shape of airfoil in transonic region using a genetic algorithm (GA). Response surfaces are based on back propagation neural network (BPN) and regression model. Training data of BPN and regression model were obtained by computational fluid dynamic analysis using CFD-ACE, and each analysis has been designed by design of experiments.
In this study, steady and unsteady aerodynamic analyses of a huge rocket configuration have been conducted in a transonic flow region. The launch vehicle structural response are coupled with the transonic flow state transitions at the nose of the payload fairing. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for aeroelastic computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Navier-Stokes equations using the structured grid system have been applied to the rocket configurations. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for rocket design and test engineers.
A numerical investigation has been performed to discuss the radiation-affected steady-laminar natural convection in an enclosure under a large temperature difference. Due to inherent nature of this study, the Boussinesq approximation is no longer valid. Therefore the radiating fluid in an enclosure is treated as a ideal gas. To examine the effects of thermal radiation on thermo-fluid dynamic behaviors in complex geometries, two incomplete partitions are introduced. Based on the results of this study, the dispositions of incomplete partitions with radiatively participating medium are found to incur a distinct difference in fluid-dynamic as well as thermal behavior.
In this study, the design and verification of 6 kW class lift-type vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) has been conducted using advanced CAE technique based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element method (FEM), and computational structural dynamics (CSD). Designed aerodynamic performance of the VAWT model is tested using unsteady CFD method. Designed structural safety is also tested through the evaluation of maximum induced stress level and resonance characteristics using FEM and CSD methods. It is importantly shown that the effect of master eccentricity due to rotational inertia needs to be carefully considered to additionally investigate dynamic stress and deformation level of the designed VAWT system.
