  • In the present paper, a transonic mixed-flow compressor that has relatively lower frontal area than that of centrifugal compressors is discussed, and aerodynamic design as well as performance prediction are performed. Main design constraints are compressor exit Mach number of 0.3 and flow angle of 30degrees at the design point, and maximum overall compressor diameter of 177mm, that is 7.0inch. The mass flow rate of design point and pressure ratio are 1.05kg/s and 5.2:1, respectively. The aerodynamic design results show that the transonic compressor designed with forward-swept inducer and curved diffuser can have the target performance with efficiency of 75% within the given constraints. And the compressor exit flow characteristics are discussed here.

  • For piping line systems associated with a double-acting reciprocating compressor, an analytical study has been made on the gas pulsation in piping lines and its effects on the compressor performance. The transfer matrix which relates mass flow rate to the gas pulsation downstream of the compressor valve can be obtained by an acoustic model for piping line systems which include snubber and after-cooler with the aid of four pole theory Since mass flow rate is affected by the pressure pulsation in the pressure plenum, while the latter being determined by the former, iteration in the calculation should be made for convergence. The gas pulsation in pipings is found to have an adverse effect on the compressor's performance, and the magnitude of the gas pulsation can be lowered by increasing snubber volume.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the charging gas effect on the resonance and performance characteristics of the linear compressor for small scale FPFD Stirling refrigerator. To ensure high performance of FPFD type Stirling refrigerator, the operating frequency of the refrigerator should be around the natural frequency of compressor. The gas spring effect which is induced from Pressure change in cylinder due to motion of pistons has significant effect on the natural frequency of the compressor. The numerical results show the linear compressor has high natural frequency when the charging pressure of working fluid is high and the stroke of compressor, current, input power and efficiency of compressor were shown with different operating conditions.

  • This paper presents a simple thermo-physical model of reciprocating compressors for household refrigerator-freezers. The compressor model has been developed based on thermodynamic principles and large data sets from the compressor calorimeter tests. The input data are compressor geometry (displacement and clearance volume), compressor speed, suction pressure and temperature, discharge pressure, and ambient temperature. The model can estimate mass flow rate and compressor power consumption within 3.0% accuracy, which is not much larger than measurement errors associated with calorimeter testing under ideal conditions.

  • Cycle simulation of Ground Source Heat Pump[GSHP] system was carried out to determine the design specification of basic components such as turbo compressor and heat exchangers. Part load operation characteristics of the designed GSHP system was estimated using the compressor and heat exchanger performance data. A 50RT class turbo compressor for GSHP system is now under development, in which R134a refrigerant is adopted as working fluid. The compressor with variable cascade diffusers is designed to work both in cooling and heating modes so that it can actively keep up with the climate change with high efficiency. The normal running speeds of the compressor are 59000rpm for heating mode and 70000rpm for tooling mode respectively. It has two identical impellers at both ends of the rotor so as to minimize aero-induced thrust force effectively. GSHP system was coupled with a vortical type heat exchanger, and heat gain and heat loss from ground were evaluated per a bore hole. For the optimal integration of the heat pump system, its header for circulating fluid was combined with the ground heat exchangers in parallel and series configuration.

  • In this study, a method for the multi-objective optimization of an impeller for a centrifugal compressor using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and response surface method (RSM) was proposed. Numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX and Mechanical with various configurations of impeller geometry. Each design parameter was divided into 3 levels. A total of 15 design points were planned using Box-Behnken design, which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces based on the results of the DOE were used to find the optimal shape of the impeller. Two objective functions, isentropic efficiency and equivalent stress were selected. Each objective function is an important factor of aerodynamic performance and structural safety. The entire process of optimization was conducted using the ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). The trade-off between the two objectives was analyzed in the light of Pareto-optimal solutions. Through the optimization, the structural safety and aerodynamic performance of the centrifugal compressor were increased.

  • The valve is the key part which governs the efficiency, noise and reliability of the compressor, so the development of analytical model about valve performance is necessary. As the valve leed is opened and closed by pressure pulsation, the flow characteristic of the refrigerant passing the valve is very important. In the present study, a circular disk with inclination is assumed to be the valve reed of a reciprocating compressor and numerical analysis of three dimensional velocity fields are perfomed for the radial flow through the valve model. The effective flow and force area which are required to predict the efficiency of the valve are measured and compared with the numerical analysis in this research.

  • A 150 m$\^$3//hr, 30 kg/cm$\^$2/, air-cooled 3-stage reciprocating air compressor is designed to be used in starting large diesel engines of ships. A basic design procedure is presented to meet the targeted pressure and flow rate, and especially a volumetric efficiency of 80%. Temperature and stress analysis of the 1st stage cylinder are performed using axisymmetric FEM modelings. The dynamics of valve system is analyzed and stress at the 1st stage valve seat caused by valve impact is evaluated. To reduce friction loss and wear at the compressor engine system tribological design issues are reviewed and good design practices are suggested. Finally, forced-air pin-type interstage coolers are designed to dissipate generated compression heat at each stage.
