Various types of ultrasonic techniques have been used for the estimation of compressive strength of concrete structures. However, conventional ultrasonic velocity method using only longitudial wave cannot be determined the compressive strength of concrete structures with accuracy. In this paper, by using the introduction of multiple parameter, e. g. velocity of shear wave, velocity of longitudinal wave, attenuation coefficient of shear wave, attenuation coefficient of longitudinal wave, combination condition, age and preservation method, multiple regression analysis method was applied to the determination of compressive strength of concrete structures. The experimental results show that velocity of shear wave can be estimated compressive strength of concrete with more accuracy compared with the velocity of longitudinal wave, accuracy of estimated error range of compressive strength of concrete structures can be enhanced within the range of ${\pm}$10% approximately.
In this study, a multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) prediction model for compressive strength of the cement mortars has been developed. For purpose of constructing this model, 8 different mixes with 240 specimens of the 2, 7, 28, 56 and 90 days compressive strength experimental results of cement mortars containing fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF) and FA+SF used in training and testing for MLPNN system was gathered from the standard cement tests. The data used in the MLPNN model are arranged in a format of four input parameters that cover the FA, SF, FA+SF and age of samples and an output parameter which is compressive strength of cement mortars. In the model, the training and testing results have shown that MLPNN system has strong potential as a feasible tool for predicting 2, 7, 28, 56 and 90 days compressive strength of cement mortars.
The nondestructive test is widely used in the field of diagnosis and maintenance to evaluate the degree of damaging of structures caused by aging, and the demand for this test method is expected to continue increasing. However, there is a lack of standards related to the nondestructive test, and South Korea is relying heavily on developed nations for original technologies related to diagnosis. It is an urgent task to establish a nondestructive test method appropriate for the circumstance of South Korea. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze estimated error of compressive strength in single-story structures comprised of vertical and horizontal reinforced concrete members using the impact testing method and rebound hardness method, which are nondestructive test methods, and to review on-site applicability of these methods. Based on compressive strength of the structures estimated, overall mean error was 21.2% for the impact testing method and 15.6% for the rebound hardness method. The necessity of a reliable diagnostic method based on compound nondestructive test methods to increase accuracy of estimation was confirmed.

In this study, the experimental tests for the direct tensile strength measurement of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) were numerically modeled by using the discrete element method (circle type element) and Finite Element Method (FEM). The experimental tests used for the laboratory tensile strength measurement is the Compressive-to-Tensile Load Conversion (CTLC) device. In this paper, the failure process including the cracks initiation, propagation and coalescence studied and then the direct tensile strength of the UHPC specimens measured by the novel apparatus i.e., CTLC device. For this purpose, the UHPC member (each containing a central hole) prepared, and situated in the CTLC device which in turn placed in the universal testing machine. The direct tensile strength of the member is measured due to the direct tensile stress which is applied to this specimen by the CTLC device. This novel device transferring the applied compressive load to that of the tensile during the testing process. The UHPC beam specimen of size 150 × 60 × 190 mm and internal hole of 75 × 60 mm was used in this study. The rate of the applied compressive load to CTLC device through the universal testing machine was 0.02 MPa/s. The direct tensile strength of UHPC was found using a new formula based on the present analyses. The numerical simulation given in this study gives the tensile strength and failure behavior of the UHPC very close to those obtained experimentally by the CTLC device implemented in the universal testing machine. The percent variation between experimental results and numerical results was found as nearly 2%. PFC2D simulations of the direct tensile strength measuring specimen and ABAQUS simulation of the tested CTLC specimens both demonstrate the validity and capability of the proposed testing procedure for the direct tensile strength measurement of UHPC specimens.
This study is to characterize the material property of early age high performance concrete emphasizing compressive strength using nondestructive testing methods. Three high performance concrete slabs of 600, 850 and 1100kg/$cm^{2}$ compressive strengths were prepared together with cylinders from same batches. Cylinder tests were peformed at the ages of 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after pouring. Using the impact echo method, the compression wave velocities were obtained based on different high performance concrete ages and compressive strengths. The equation to obtain the compressive strengths of high performance concrete has been developed using the obtained compression wave velocities. Using the SASW (spectral analysis of surface wave) method, the equation have also been developed to obtain the compressive strengths of high performance concrete based on the surface wave velocities.
As the ministry of construction and transportation established quality standards for recycled aggregate in August, 2005, the consumption of recycled aggregates is expected to be increased in construction fields in the future. Thus the relations between compressive strength of general concretes and that of recycled aggregate concretes which are applied to actual structures are attempted to investigate through non-destruction testing method. Presently Schmitt-Hammer test method is that concrete compressive strength is predicted by measuring surface hardness of concretes, and is well known as the most convenient and simply operated method among many non-destruction testing methods. In this study, cylinder specimen and mock-up were constructed using recycled aggregate concretes made by the first class recycled coarse aggregates and recycled fine aggregates specified in KS F 2573 (recycled aggregate for concrete), and compressive strength of hardened concrete of middle ages was evaluated.
The major object of this study is to investigate experimentally the experimental equation by the non-destructive testing methods of ultrasonic pulse velocity, rebound number, combined method of ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound number, maturity which are applicable to the evaluation of compressive strength of concrete at early ages. Also test result of mix are statistically analyzed to infer the correlation coefficient between the maturity and the compressive strength of concrete. The results show good application of Logistic curve for estimating strength development under various curing temperature. The relation between ultrasonic pulse velocity, rebound number, combined method of ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound number and compressive strength of concrete have low correlation coefficient, but maturity method show good correlation coefficient.
This paper, proposes 20 models for predicting compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) containing silica fume by using gene expression programming (GEP). To construct the models, experimental data of 228 specimens produced from 61 different mixtures were collected from the literature. 80% of data sets were used in the training phase and the remained 20% in testing phase. Input variables were arranged in a format of seven input parameters including age of the specimen, cement content, water content, natural aggregates content, recycled aggregates content, silica fume content and amount of superplasticizer. The training and testing showed the models have good conformity with experimental results for predicting the compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete containing silica fume.
In this study, we analyze the behavior of concrete which contains zeolite and diatomite. In order to achieve the goal, we utilize expert system methods. The utilized methods are artificial neural network and adaptive network-based fuzzy inference systems. In this respect, we exploit seven different mixes of concrete. The concrete mixes contain zeolite, diatomite, mixture of zeolite and diatomite. All seven concrete mixes are exposed to 28, 56 and 90 days' compressive strength experiments with 63 specimens. The results of the compressive strength experiments are used as input data during the training and testing of expert system methods. In terms of artificial neural network and adaptive network-based fuzzy models, data format comprises seven input parameters, which are; the age of samples (days), amount of Portland cement, zeolite, diatomite, aggregate, water and hyper plasticizer. On the other hand, the output parameter is defined as the compressive strength of concrete. In the models, training and testing results have concluded that both expert system model yield thrilling medium to predict the compressive strength of concrete containing zeolite and diatomite.
Impedance spectroscopy is a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) method first proposed and developed for evaluating TGO layers with compressive stress inside thermally degraded plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings (PS TBCs). A bode plot (phase angle (h) vs. frequency (f)) was used to investigate the TGO layer on electrical responses. In our experimental study, the phase angle of Bode plots is sensitive for detecting TGO layers while applying compressive stress on thermal barrier coatings. It is difficult to detect TGO layers in samples isothermally aged for 100 hrs and 200 hrs without compressive stress, and substantial change of phase was observed these samples with compressive stress. Also, the frequency shift of the phase angle and change of the phase angle are observed in samples isothermally aged for more than 400 hrs.
