Statement of problem: Injuries along with discomfort may result on the oral mucosa when non-rigid material is used as the major connector in construction of RPD, since nonrigid major connectors transmit unstable forces throughout the appliance. Titanium which recently draws attention as a substitute of Co-Cr had a difficulty in fabricating due to high melting temperature but the development of casting technique makes it possible to apply to the clinical case. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the rigidity and the castability of titanium upper major connector by design and make a comparison with Co-Cr major connectors which are widely used in clinical cases now. Material and methods: Casting was done using CP-Ti(Grage 2) (Kobe still Co., Japan) for the experimental groups, and 4 various designs namely palatal strap, U-shaped bar, A-P strap, and complete palatal plate were casted and 5 of each designs were included in each group. For the experimental group, Universal testing machine (Model 4502; Instron, Canton, Mass) was used to apply vertical torsional force vertically to the horizontal plane of major connector. In the second experiment, Vertical compressive force was applied to the horizontal plane of major connector. As a comparative group, Co-Cr major connector was equally manufactured and underwent the same experimental procedures Strain rate was measured after constant loading for one minute duration, and statistical analysis was done with SPSS ver.10.0 for WIN(SPSS. Inc. USA). From the one-way ANOVA and variance analysis (P=0.05), Scheffe's multiple comparison test implemented. Results: 1. Least amount of strain was observed with complete palatal plate followed by A-P bar, palatal bar, and the U-shaped bar having most amount of strain. 2. In all designs of titanium major connector, less strain rate was observed under compressive loading than under torsional loading showing more resistance to lateral force. 3. For titanium major connector, less strain rate was observed when the force is applied to the first premolar area rather than to the second molar area indicating more strength with shorter length of lever. 4. In Comparison of Co-Cr major connector with titanium major connector, palatal strap and U-shaped bar designs showed higher strength under torsional force that is statically significant, and under compressive force, no significant difference was observed expert for U-shaped bar. 5. In titanium major connector, complete palatal plate showed lowest success rate in casting when compared with the Co-Cr major connector. Conclusion: Above results prove that when using titanium for major connector, only with designs capable of generating rigidity can the major connector have almost equal amount of rigidity as Co-Cr major connector and show lower success rate in casting when compared with the Co-Cr major connector.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the clinical efficiency of tungsten carbide/carbon coating on obtaining optimal preload of abutment screw compared with non-coated screw in external-hex implant system. In the present work, rotational value and the compressive force between abutment and fixture of abutment screws without coating and with coating tightened to 30Ncm were measured. Mean compressive force of coated screw was 504.6N. Then uncoated screw was tightened to clamping the abutment and the implant to 504.6N, and the tightening torque value and the rotational value was recorded. The following conclusions were drawn within the limitation of this study. Compressive force of coated screw was higher than that of uncoated screw after tightening at 30Ncm. The tightening torque that was nedeed to clamping the uncoated screw equal to coated screw tightened to 30Ncm was 55.6Ncm. In case of equal compressive force, there was no significant difference in rotation value between coated and uncoated screw.
In this research, experimental and numerical simulations were adopted to investigate the effects of ligament angle on compressive strength and failure mode of rock-like material specimens containing two non-coplanar filled fissures under uniaxial compression. The experimental results show that with the increase of ligament angle, the compressive strength decreases to a nadir at the ligament angle of $60^{\circ}$, before increasing to the maximum at the ligament angle of $120^{\circ}$, while the elastic modulus is not obviously related to the ligament angle. The shear coalescence type easily occurred when ${\alpha}$ < ${\beta}$, although having the same degree difference between the angle of ligament and fissure. Numerical simulations using $PFC^{2D}$ were performed for flawed specimens under uniaxial compression, and the results are in good consistency with the experimental results. By analyzing the crack evolution process and parallel bond force field of rock-like material specimen containing two non-coplanar filled fissures, we can conclude that the coalescence and propagation of crack are mainly derived from parallel bond force, and the crack initiation and propagation also affect the distribution of parallel bond force. Finally, the displacement vectors in ligament region were used to identify the type of coalescence, and the results coincided with that obtained by analyzing parallel bond force field. These experimental and numerical results are expected to improve the understanding of the mechanism of flawed rock engineering structures.
The paper is concerned with an improved scheme for application of the blank holding force in order to take account of the thickness distribution in the sheet material of the flange region. The scheme incorporates with a modified membrane finite element method for planar anisotropic materials. The new scheme proposed two coefficients α and βto calculate the compressive stress in the sheet metal due to the blank holding force, which should be determined properly for accurate analysis. The effect of αand βon the blank holding force distribution and the deformed shape is investigated with simulation of rectangular cup deep drawing processes by changing parameter values.
Transplanting process during the tissue culture of potato seedlings is costly, since the cost of highly skilled labor working in the sanitary environment takes up about 60-70% of the production cost. The objective of this study was to develop a soft gripper of a transplanting robot system for the labor-saving tissue culture. The prototype of the soft gripper was consisted of power-transmitting part finger and plant contacts. The power transmitting part transformed the rotating motion of a step motor to the reciprocating motion of the finger. Plant stems used in the test were potato seedlings cultured for six weeks. The dimensional characteristics of cultured seedlings, the compressive strengths of the stems, the extractive force from the culture medium and the gripping force of the finger were measured. A proper gripping force was found to be 0.343N at the extractive force of 0.41N when the plant contacts were made of silicon. Sixteen plants out of 70 trials were tangled with others, resulting in the success rate of 77.1%.

In this paper a dynamic behavior(natural frequency) of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to follower force is presented. In addition, an analysis of the flutter and buckling instability of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to a follower compressive load is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The vibration analysis on such cracked beam is conducted to identify the critical follower force for flutter insstability based on the variation of the first two resonant frequencies of the beam. Besides, the effect of the crack's intensity and location on the flutter follower force is studied. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations.
The restraint force is required an accurate measurement and analysis to protect weldment from residual stress. Also, this residual stress caused by clacks in weldments are often observed in the weldments of large size nozzles or radial tanks after welding. This paper is preformed on the study of evaluation of welding restraint forces using load cell with STS thin plate which are using pressure vessel steel in the industry field. As a result of this study, as the welding currents are higher and the welding speeds are more slowly, the magnitude of restraint force in process of the flat plate welding hows to be more large. Also, the temperature in process of melting is increasingly rising, then the restraint forces exhibit the compressive forces, whereas the restraint forces during cooling represent extensional force.

To evaluate the mechanical behavior and the compressive stress distribution in high tension bolted joints according to the size of bolt hole, the experimental and analytical studies are performed with enlarging bolt hole size. In experimental study, the static test is performed to measure the slip coefficient, and the fatigue test is also performed to evaluate the fatigue strength and failure pattern of fatigue crack. In analytical study, the compressive stress distribution is investigated by using the finite element analysis. From the result of experimental study, the slip coefficient and fatigue strength of the high tension bolted joints with oversize hole are not much different but somewhat it has decreased. These are because the size of bolt hole is larger than the holes of nominal size, therefore the width of clamping force is decreased and the compressive stress distribution area is smaller, this is certificated in the finite element analysis. In addition, the origin of fatigue crack in the oversize holes is closer to the hole than in the holes of nominal size, consequently it is investigated that the origin of fatigue crack is intimately associated with the compressive stress distribution which is formulated by the clamping force in both base metal and splice plate.
Orthodontic force is a mechanical stress controlling both of tooth movement and skeletal growth. The mechanical stress stimulate bone cells that may exert some influence on bone remodeling. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference in cellular activity depending on mechanical stresses such as compressive and tensile force by determining the alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity. A clonal osteogenic cell line MC3T3-E1 was seeded into a 24-well plate($2{\times}10^4/well$). At the confluent phase, a continuous compressive hydrostatic pressure($25g/cm^2$, $300g/cm^2$) and continuous tensile hydrostatic pressure($-25g/cm^2$, $-300g/cm^2$) were applied for 4, 6, 10, 14, 18, 20 days respectively by a diaphgragm pump. At the end of the stimulation period, cell layers were prepared for ALP activity assay. The ALP activity of the compressive group increased more than that of the tensile group at same force magnitude, whereas the cells responded to a similar pattern regardless of the type of mechanical stress The ALP activity of the compressive and tensile group turned into the level of the control group as the length of time increased. These results indicated that a mechanical stress may be more effective on cellular activity during active cellular proliferation and differentiation periods. The time to achieve maximum ALP activity was delayed as the mechanical stress increased in both the compressive and the tensile group. Accordingly, the magnitude of the stress rather than the type of mechanical stress may have more influence on cellular activity.
