AERODYNAMIC DESIGN OF A BUMP-TYPE INLET

  • Numerical investigations were performed with an external-compression inlet with a three-dimensional bump at Mach 2 to scrutinize the geometrical effects of the bump in controlling the interaction of a shock wave with a boundary layer. The inlet was designed for two oblique shock waves and a terminal normal shock wave followed by a subsonic diffuser, with a circular cross-section throughout. The bump-type inlet that replaced the aft ramp of the conventional ramp-type inlet was optimized with respect to the inlet performance parameters as well as compared with the conventional ramp-type inlet. The current numerical simulations showed that a bump-type inlet can provide an improvement in the total pressure recovery downstream of the shock wave/boundary layer interaction over a conventional ramp-type inlet.

A Low-elastic MRE Fabrication Process based on the Taguchi Method (다구찌법을 이용한 저탄성 MRE 제조공정 연구)

  • In this study, a PDMS-based low-elasticity magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) was fabricated and the Taguchi method was used to identify the factors affecting the elastic modulus. The mixing entropy was calculated using optical microscopy to confirm particle dispersion, which was referenced in the process establishment. In the MRE process, four parameters, namely the curing agent, particle type, particle fraction, and applied magnetic field, were divided into three levels. The elastic modulus of the specimen was compared at the off-state and at 0.2 T using compression tests, and the obtained signal to noise ratio indicated that the softness and change in the elastic modulus of the MRE was mainly affected by the curing agent and the particle fraction.

Partial replacement of fine aggregates with laterite in GGBS-blended-concrete

  • This paper presents a preliminary study on the influence of laterite soil replacing conventional fine aggregates on the strength properties of GGBS-blended-concrete. For this purpose, GGBS-blended-concrete samples with 40% GGBS, 60% Portland cement (PC), and locally available laterite soil was used. Laterite soils at 0, 25, 50 and 75% by weight were used in trails to replace the conventional fine aggregates. A control mix using only PC, river sand, course aggregates and water served as bench mark in comparing the performance of the composite concrete mix. Test blocks including 60 cubes for compression test; 20 cylinders for split tensile test; and 20 beams for flexural strength test were prepared in the laboratory. Results showed decreasing trends in strength parameters with increasing laterite content in GGBS-blended-concrete. 25% and 50% laterite replacement showed convincing strength (with small decrease) after 28 day curing, which is about 87-90% and 72-85% respectively in comparison to that achieved by the control mix.

Applicability of exponential stress-strain models for carbonate rocks

  • Stress-strain responses of weak-to-strong carbonate rocks used for tunnel construction were studied. The analysis of applicability of exponential stress-strain models based on Haldane's distribution function is presented. It is revealed that these exponential equations presented in transformed forms allow us to predict stress-strain relationships over the whole pre-failure strain range without mechanical testing of rock samples under compression using a press machine and to avoid measurements of axial failure strains for which relatively large values of compressive stress are required. In this study, only one point measurement (small strain at small stress) using indentation test and uniaxial compressive strength determined by a standard Schmidt hammer are considered as input parameters to predict stress-strain response from zero strain/zero stress up to failure. Observations show good predictive capabilities of transformed stress-stress models for weak-to-strong (${\sigma}_c$ <100 MPa) heterogeneous carbonate rocks exhibiting small (< 0.5 %), intermediate (< 1 %) and large (> 1 %) axial strains.

  • Primary prevention of low back injury in industry has focused on assessing the person's ability to perform physical labor. If the job to be performed is known to require lifting and moving of materials which could stress the low back, then special consideration is given to the health and functional capability of the person, s back. The major pursuit in lifting task of research is to provide objective criteria based upon all of the relevant mechanical parameters which describe both man art task so as to minimize the probabilities of injury within the economic constraints of each organization. The purpose of this study is to predict the back compression of persons asked to lift objects while assuming different position by computer simulation. The primary result of this study is that the incidence of low back injury is correlated with higher lifting strenth requirements as determined by assessment of both the location and magnitude of the load lifted. It is, therefore, recommended that load lifting be considered potentially hazardous, and the action limit and the maximum permissiable limit be used to guide corrective action.

  • Recently it has been focused that the automobile engine has developed in a strong upward tendency for the use of the high viscosity and poorer quality fuels in achieving the high performance, fuel economy, and emission reduction. Therefore it is not easy to solve the problems between low specific fuel consumption, and exhaust emission control at automotive engine In this study, it is designed and used the test bed which is installed with fuel injector controller. In addition to equipped engine using CRDI by controlling the injection timing with modulator, it has tested and analyzed the engine cycle variation characteristics, as it is varied that they are the operating parameters: fuel injected quantity, injection timing, engine speed and scavenging pressure.

  • Cyclic behavior of advanced high strength steel sheets was measured using an inverse-optimization approach with pre-straining and bending. First, tensile specimens were pre-strained, and three-point bending was conducted for the pre-strained specimens. By using the inverse finite element optimization, the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening parameters that minimize the error between the measured and predicted bending force-displacement curves. The measured cyclic behavior agreed well with the cyclic behavior measured by sheet tension-compression test, which confirms the validity of the measuring procedure based on inverse optimization.

  • The shear behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams with web opennings has been scrutinized experimentally to verify the influences of the structural parameters such as size, shape, location and reinfrocements of web openings, and shear span ratio. A total of 22 specimens has been tested under one or two point loading conditions at the laboratory. In the tests most specimens have shown shear failures with inclined cracks from the loacing points to the supports through openings. The ultimate strengths of the specimens measured from the tests have shown wide differences depending on the locations of the openings which deter the formation of the compression struts between the loading points and the supports. The effects of the reinforcements and the geomtry of the openings on the shear strengths and the crack developments have been carefully checked and analyzed.

  • The objective of this paper is to analyse the high-strength concrete columns subjected to reversed cyclic and axial loads by using nonlinear analysis model and compare the experimental results with analysis. The analytical parameters are the compressive strength of concrete, spacing of lateral reinforcement and lateral reinforcement ratio. In this study, the proposed analytical model takes ito account the influence of confined concrete, tension stiffening and strain hardening of steel. The high-strength concrete columns are used to model fiber section element. The analysis results are shown comparatively good prediction on envelope curve, accumulative dissipated energy, deformability and so on.

A Proposal of the Compressive Stress Distribution Model of Ultra High-Strength Concrete (초고강도 콘크리트에 적합한 응력분포 모델의 제안)

  • This paper presents the compressive stress distribution model appropriate to predict the ultimate strength of structural elements using ultra high-strength concrete. From the results of this investigation, the following conclusions are drawn: 1. The constant value of strain at extreme concrete compression fiber of 0.0027 is seen to represent satisfactorily the experimental result for ultra high-strength concrete. 2. The current ACI-318 rectangular stress block parameters were found to overestimate the moment capacity of ultra high-strength concrete columns with eccentrically loaded. 3. The equivalent trapezoidal stress distribution model with new parameter $\lambda_1$ and $\lambda_2$ was developed.
