  • In this paper, an efficient hardware architecture is proposed for $32{\times}32$ inverse transform HEVC decoder. HEVC is a new image compression standard to deal with much larger image sizes compared with conventional image codecs, such as 4k, 8k images. To process huge image data effectively, it adopts various new block structures. Theses blocks consists of $4{\times}4$, $8{\times}8$, $16{\times}16$, and $32{\times}32$ block. This paper suggests an effective structures to process $32{\times}32$ inverse transform. This structure of inverse transform adopts the decomposed $16{\times}16$ matrixes of $32{\times}32$ matrix, and simplified the operations by implementing multiplying with shifters and adders. Additionally the operations frequency is downed by using multicycle paths. Also this structure can be easily adopted to a multi-size transform or a forward transform block in HEVC codec.

  • In this Paper, we propose fast block matching algorithm by dividing complex areas based on complexity order of reference block and square sub-block to reduce an amount of computation of full starch(FS) algorithm for fast motion estimation, while keeping the same prediction quality compared with the full search algorithm. By using the fact that matching error is proportional to the gradient of reference block, we reduced unnecessary computations with square sub-block adaptive matching scan based image complexity instead of conventional sequential matching scan and row/column based matching scan. Our algorithm reduces about $30\%$ of computations for block matching error compared with the conventional partial distortion elimination(PDE) algorithm without any prediction quality, and our algorithm will be useful in real-time video coding applications using MPEG-4 AVC or MPEG-2.

  • The binomial sequences are family of orthogonal sequences that can be generated with remarkable simplicity-no multiplications are necessary. This paper introduces a class of non-recursive multidimensional filters for frequency-selective image processing without multiplication operations. The magnitude responses are narrow-band. approximately gaussian-shaped with center frequencies which can be positioned to yield low-pass. band-pass. or high-pass filtering. Algorithms for the efficient implementation of these filters in software or in hardware are described. Also. we show that the binomial QMFs are the maximally flat magnitude square Perfect Reconstruction paraunitary filters with good compression capability and these are shown to be wavelet filters as well. In wavelet transform the original image is decomposed at different scales using a pyramidal algorithm architecture. The decomposition is along the vertical and horizontal direction and maintains constant the number of pixels required to describe the images. An efficient perfect reconstruction binomial QMF-Wavelet signal decomposition structure is proposed. The technique provides a set of filter solutions with very good amplitude responses and band split. The proposed binomial QMF-filter structure is efficient, simple to implement on VLSl. and suitable for multi-resolution signal decomposition and coding applications.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel fast and low-complexity Motion Estimation (ME) algorithm for Ultra High Definition (UHD) High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Motion estimation occupies 77~81% of the amount of computation in HEVC. After all, the main key of video codec implementation is to find a fast and low-complexity motion estimation algorithm and architecture. We analyze the previous motion estimation algorithms and propose three optimal algorithm to reduce the computation proportion for HEVC. The proposed algorithm uses only 0.36% of the amount of operations compared to full search algorithm while maintaining compression performance with slight loss of 1.1%.

  • In this paper, for compression and transmission of 3D image, we propose an algorithm which executes 3D discrete cosine transform(DCT) for 3D images, hierarchically segments 3D blocks of an image in comparison with the original image and executes finite-state vector quantization(FSVQ) for each 3D block. Using 3D DCT coefficient feature, a 3D image is segmented hierarchically into large smooth blocks and small edge blocks, then the block hierarchy informations are transmitted. The codebooks are constructed for each hierarchical blocks respectively, the encoder transmits codeword index using FSVQ for reducing encoded bit with hierarchical segmentation information. The new algorithm suggested in this paper shows that the quality of Small Lobster and Head image increased by 1,91 dB and 1.47 dB respectively compared with those of HFSVQ.

  • In video coding standard H.264/AVC, variable block size mode algorithm improves compression efficiency but has need of a large amount of computation for various block modes and mode decision. Meanwhile, decided inter block modes depend on the complexity of a block image, and then the more complex a macroblock is, the smaller its block size is. This paper proposes fast inter block mode decision algorithm. It limits valid block modes to the block modes with a great chance for decision using the image complexity and carries out motion estimation rate-distortion optimization with only the valid block modes. In addition to that, it applies fast motion estimation PDE to the valid block modes with only the $16{\times}16$ block mode. The reference software JM 9.5 was executed to estimate the proposed algorithm's performance. The simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm could save about 24.12% of the averaged motion estimation time while keeping the image quality and the bit rate to be -0.02dB and -0.12% on the average, respectively.

  • There are some problems in directly applying the conventional MPEG bit-stream based watermarking schemes to the bit-stream of a new compression standard, H.264/AVC. In this paper we analyze the effects of the conventional DCT-based watermarking scheme to H.264/AVC, especially in terms of image distortions and bit-rate changes. It turns out that the intra-frame prediction md CAVLC of H.264/AVC with the watermarking worsen the image distortions and bit-rate changes. The experiment results show on average 28.17dB decrease in PSNR and 56.71% increase in bit-rate over all QPs.

  • In video coding standard H.264/AVC, motion estimation using multiple reference pictures improves compression efficiency but the efficiency depends upon image content not the number of reference pictures. So, the motion estimation includes a large amount of computation of no worth according to image. This paper proposes fast motion estimation algorithm that removes worthless computation in the motion estimation using multiple reference pictures. The proposed algorithm classifies a block into valid and invalid blocks for the multiple reference pictures and removes the workless computation by applying a single reference picture to the invalid block. To estimate the proposed algorithm's performance, image quality, bit rate, and motion estimation time are compared with ones of the conventional algorithm in the reference software JM 9.5. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can considerably save about 38.67% the averaged motion estimation time while keeping the image quality and the bit rate, whose are average values are -0.02dB and -0.77% respectively, as good as the conventional algorithm.

  • Due to the advances in hardware technologies for low-power CMOS cameras, there have been various researches on wireless video sensor network(WVSN) applications including agricultural monitoring and environmental tracking. In such a system, its core technologies include video compression and wireless transmission. Since data of video sensors are bigger than those of other sensors, it is particularly necessary to estimate precisely the traffic after video encoding. In this paper, we present an estimation method for the encoded video traffic in WVSN networks. To estimate traffic characteristics accurately, the proposed method first measures complexities of frames and then applies them to the bit rate estimation adaptively. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed method improves the estimation of bit rate characteristics by more than 12% as compared to the existing method.
