  • With an active structural involvement in spiral case structure (SCS) that is always the design and research focus of hydroelectric power plant (HPP), the compressible membrane sandwiched between steel spiral case and surrounding reinforced concrete was often assumed to be linear elastic material in conventional design analysis of SCS. Unfortunately considerable previous studies have proved that the foam material serving as membrane exhibits essentially nonlinear mechanical behavior. In order to clarify the effect of membrane (foam) material's nonlinear stress-strain behavior on SCS, this work performed a case study on SCS with a compressible membrane using the ABAQUS code after a sound calibration of the employed constitutive model describing foam material. In view of the successful capture of fitted stress-strain curve of test by the FEM program, we recommend an application and dissemination of the simulation technique employed in this work for membrane material description to structural designers of SCS. Even more important, the case study argues that taking into account the nonlinear stress-strain response of membrane material in loading process is definitely essential. However, we hold it unnecessary to consider the membrane material's hysteresis and additionally, employment of nonlinear elastic model for membrane material description is adequate to the structural design of SCS. Understanding and accepting these concepts will help to analyze and predict the structural performance of SCS more accurately in design effort.

  • This paper describes the air compressibility effect in the CFD simulation of water impact load prediction. In order to consider the air compressibility effect, two sets of governing equations are employed, namely the incompressible Navier-stokes equations and compressible Navier-Stokes equations that describe general compressible gas flow. In order to describe violent motion of free surface, volume-of-fluid method is utilized. The role of air compressibility is presented by the comparative study of water impact load obtained from two different air models, i.e. the compressible and incompressible air. For both cases, water is considered as incompressible media. Compressible air model shows oscillatory behavior of pressure on the solid surface that may attribute to the air-cushion effect. Incompressible air model showed no such oscillatory behavior in the pressure history. This study also showed that the CFD simulation can capture the formation of air pockets enclosed by water and solid surface, which may be the location where the air compressibility effect is dominant.

  • The code developed using a pressure-based method for unified conservation laws of incompressible/compressible fluids is expanded to handle moving or deforming body boundaries using the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method. An instantaneous pressure field is calculated from a pressure Poisson equation for the whole fluid domain, including the compressible gas region. The polytropic gas is assumed for the compressible fluid so that the energy equation is decoupled. Immersed boundary nodes are identified based on edges crossing body boundaries. The velocity vector is reconstructed at the immersed boundary node using an interpolation along the assigned local normal line. The developed code is validated by comparing the time histories of pressure and wave elevation for sloshing in a rectangular and a membrane-type tank. The validated code is applied to simulate air cushion effects in a rectangular tank under sway motion. Time variations of pressure fields are analyzed in detail as the air pocket pulsates. It is shown that the contraction and expansion of the air pocket dominate the pressure loads on the wall of the tank. The present results are in good agreement with other experimental and computational results for the amplitude and the decay of the pressure oscillations measured at the pressure gauges.

  • The paper studies the dispersion and attenuation of propagating waves in the "plate+compressible viscous fluid layer" system in the case where the fluid layer flow is restricted with a rigid wall, and in the case where the fluid layer has a free face. The motion of the plate is described by the exact equations of elastodynamics and the flow of the fluid by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for compressible barotropic Newtonian viscous fluids. Analytical expressions are obtained for the amplitudes of the sought values, and the dispersion equation is derived using the corresponding boundary and compatibility conditions. To find the complex roots of the dispersion equation, an algorithm based on equating the modulus of the dispersion determinant to zero is developed. Numerical results on the dispersion and attenuation curves for various pairs of plate and fluid materials under different fluid layer face conditions are presented and discussed. Corresponding conclusions on the influence of the problem parameters on the dispersion and attenuation curves are made and, in particular, it is established that the change of the free face boundary condition with the impermeability condition can influence the dispersion and attenuation curves not only in the quantitative, but also in the qualitative sense.

  • This study was initiated to evaluate and resolve the potential problems caused as the MSWI(Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator) fly ash were stabilized and solidified into the cement. The physical and chemical properties of fly ashes (K and M) used in this study were fixed according to the operating conditions of the incineration plant. The compressible strength of the solidified matrix used in this study were measured at 7, 28, and 56 curing days, respectively, to evaluate the stability of the solidified matrix, which were further analyzed by XRD and SEM. The experimental results obtained in this study showed that the relatively long hours of curing periods were needed to solidify the fly ash. The solidified matrix containing K ash had the high and excellent compressible strength of $200{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, after 56 curing days, but was not good enough in appearance. The analytical data by SEM confirmed that the alkaline Na and K, which are highly dissolved in water, were included in the fly ash and evenly distributed into the exterior surface of the solidified matrix. Whereas, the solidified matrix containing M ash never showed such a compressible strength as shown in the K ash due to the severe fracture, even as early as 7 curing days. Based on its XRD analysis, it appeared that both $C_2S$ and $C_3S$ highly related to the compressible strength were not crystallyzed into the solidified matrix. However, the compressible strength of the solidified and cemented M ash was remarkably improved by 100 times, after the alkalinity was washed out, which indicated that it is equivalent to 30 to 40g per one kg of fly ash.

MPS (Suk and Yeh, 2007; Suk and Yeh, 2008) 및 해석해를 통해서 간접적으로 비교 검증하였다. 비교결과 CMPS와 MPS의 결과와 해석해들은 서로 잘 일치하였다. 따라서 CMPS는 압축성 유체 및 매질을 고려한 삼상흐름 수치모의를 구현 할 수 있는 가능성을 가진다.

  • This work investigates the influence of water compressibility on pressure pulsations induced by rotor-stator interaction (RSI) in hydraulic machinery, using the commercial CFD solver ANSYS-CFX. A pipe flow example with harmonic velocity excitation at the inlet plane is simulated using different grid densities and time step sizes. Results are compared with a validated code for hydraulic networks (SIMSEN). Subsequently, the solution procedure is applied to a simplified 2.5-dimensional pump-turbine configuration in prototype with different speeds of sound as well as in model scale with an adapted speed of sound. Pressure fluctuations are compared with numerical and experimental data based on prototype scale. The good agreement indicates that the scaling of acoustic effects with an adapted speed of sound works well. With respect to pressure fluctuation amplitudes along the centerline of runner channels, incompressible solutions exhibit a linear decrease while compressible solutions exhibit sinusoidal distributions with maximum values at half the channel length, coinciding with analytical solutions of one-dimensional acoustics. Furthermore, in compressible simulation the amplification of pressure fluctuations is observed from the inlet of stay vane channels to the spiral case wall. Finally, the procedure is applied to a three-dimensional pump configuration in model scale with adapted speed of sound. Normalized Pressure fluctuations are compared with results from prototype measurements. Compared to incompressible computations, compressible simulations provide similar pressure fluctuations in vaneless space, but pressure fluctuations in spiral case and penstock may be much higher.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a new Meshless Method to solve 2-D compressible flow problems numerically. This paper includes a revised Least Square method that improves robustness compared with its original version by removing excessive numerical oscillation which occurs when points are randomly distributed. Numerical analyses of hypersonic flow over a blunt body were carried out using the method, then robustness, accuracy and convergence of their results were compared with those obtained from the original method.

  • In the various module generalizations of the concepts of prime (semiprime) for a ring, the question "when are semiprime modules subdirect product of primes?" is a serious question in this context and it is considered by earlier authors in the literature. We continue study on the above question by showing that: If R is Morita equivalent to a right pre-duo ring (e.g., if R is commutative) then weakly compressible R-modules are precisely subdirect products of prime R-modules if and only if dim(R) = 0 and R/N(R) is a semi-Artinian ring if and only if every classical semiprime module is semiprime. In this case, the class of weakly compressible R-modules is an enveloping for Mod-R. Some related conditions are also investigated.

  • A study has been made of the condition to maintaining Taylor-Proudman column flows in a compressible rotating fluid, which is driven by small mechanical and/or thermal perturbations imposing on the container wall in the basic state of isothermal rigid body rotation. The Rossby and system Ekman numbers are assumed to be very small. The Taylor-Proudman column flow can be produced when energy parameter, e, becomes constant on the whole flow region. Energy balance concept, related to energy parameter, and its physical interpretation are given with comprehensive discussions.
