  • Horizon correction is a crucial stage for image composition enhancement. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based method for estimating the slanted angle of a photograph and correcting it. To estimate and correct the horizon direction, existing methods use hand-crafted low-level features such as lines, planes, and gradient distributions. However, these methods may not work well on the images that contain no lines or planes. To tackle this limitation and robustly estimate the slanted angle, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based method to estimate the slanted angle by learning more generic features using a huge dataset. In addition, we utilize multiple adaptive spatial pooling layers to extract multi-scale image features for better performance. In the experimental results, we show our CNN-based approach robustly and accurately estimates the slanted angle of an image regardless of the image content, even if the image contains no lines or planes at all.

  • This study was carried out to obtain some informations on the species composition and distribution pattern of Polychate community on the continental shelf and slope area in the East Sea. Fauna samples were collected from three sampling cruises in April of 1985, and April and October of 1987. Total 112 polychaete taxa included in 36 families were collected. Dominant species in the study area were Chaetozone setosa, Aglaophamus malmgreni, Ampharete arctica Terebellides horikoshii, Tharyx sp., and Magelona pacifica. Northern and cold water species were major contributors of polychaete communities in this study area. Dominant species showed their specific depth ranges from shelf area to upper slope and middle slope depth. The overall density was 300 indiv./m$\^$2/ and species richness was around 12 species/0.2m$\^$2/. Significant changes in mean polychaete density and species richness along depth gradient were found approximately at 600 m or deeper depth. Among physical factors, water depth, temperature and clay content, mean grain size were significantly correlated with the mean density of dominant species.

  • Transferrin is a molecule carrying iron to store and maintain for iron homeostasis of living organisms. In this study, we have purified transferrin, as an iron-binding protein, from the last larval haemolymph of Papilio xuthus by KBr density gradient ultracentrifugation and gel filtration (superose 6 HR) using fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) and transferrin containing iron was identified by Ferene S staining. The purified haemolymph transferrin was shown to have molecular mass of 78 and 80 kDa and amino acid composition of transferrin was rich in aspartic acid, valine, leucine and glutamic acid. With immuno-diffusion assay, we confirmed the existence of the transferrin in the haemo-lymph and fat body by detection of visible and clear positive reaction. From the quantitative comparison by rocket immuno-electrophoresis process, the amount of transferrin were increased in the haemolymph of 3 days after pupation and the whole 5 days after pupation. Here, with biochemical and immunohistochemical analysis, we speculate the relationship of transferrin between the physical characteristics and distribution during metamorphosis of P. xuthus.

  • The dairy industry has consistently grown via the expansion of dairy-based food categories. Dairy product consumption is stable since the nutrient composition in dairy products is ideal for human health. However, dairy products are highly susceptible to food-borne pathogens. Controlling the safety of dairy products is thus important when considering the nutrient-rich matrix of this food category. Currently, immunoassays or molecular biology techniques have been used to evaluate the safety of dairy products in Korea. These methods are based on the detection of proteins and thus have low reproducibility and sensitivity. Recent techniques to detect food-borne pathogens have focused on genetic analyses. Rapid detection methods for food-borne pathogens in milk and dairy products using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques, such as conventional PCR, real-time PCR, repetitive sequence-based (rep)-PCR, PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), and digital PCR, are reviewed in this article. The aim of this review was to contribute knowledge of the relationship between microflora and the quality of dairy products. This study will also assist in the immediate monitoring of food-borne pathogens in milk and dairy products when an outbreak related to this food category occurs.

  • An extensive study of the vegetation characteristics of the Hamersley Ranges, a mountainous desert area of north-west Australia, facilitated the comparison of plant species diversity measures with mountainous deserts of other parts of the world. Alpha diversity was defined as the number of species co-existing at local scales and was found to average 18 species per 0.1 ha for the Hamersley Ranges. This was found to be similar to seven other mountainous deserts in North and South America, and southern Africa. Variation in alpha diversity between these deserts was found to considerably lower than within deserts, suggesting that local processes control species richness at local scales. Beta diversity, defined here as turnover in species composition at various spatial scales, can be measured in many ways. For the Hamersley Ranges, Wilson's β ranged from 1.2 to 1.6 for five sites along a topographic gradient, whereas Whittaker's β between different plant communities was found to average 0.93. Comparable data was not found for other desert areas, but comparisons to non-desert areas suggest beta diversity within landscapes is relatively high and is likely to reflect the considerable landform heterogeneity of the Hamersley Ranges. 55∼70% of species were shared between different landscapes of the Hamersley Ranges; comparisons to other regions suggest beta diversity at this scale is relatively low. Gamma diversity, the number of species over large spatial extents, was successfully compared using regression analysis of the log-log species - area relationship. This revealed that the northern Sonoran desert has significantly less species than the Nama (inland) Karoo and Hamersley Ranges over medium spatial extents, but species numbers were similar at a regional scale. Several constraints to the valid comparison of species diversity were identified, including lack of standardisation of sampling techniques, the wide range of measures employed, general lack of published data, and the influence of the various components of spatial scale on most diversity measures. Recommendations on how to improve future comparative work are provided.

  • According to the distance from the industrial complex, 5 sample plots were selected to study the changes of vegetational composition of the forest community caused by air pollution in Ulsan. Then 5 subplots were set within a plot. We considered that this gradient analysis by distance could be coincided with the gradual transition of plant succession. Number of species, number of individuals, species diversity, evenness increased and similarity index decreased with increasing distance from the industrial complex. Robinia pseudoacacia, Smilax china appeared to be tolerant to air pollution whereas Quercus variabilis, Q-aliena, Q. dentata and Albizzia julibrissin to be sensitive.

  • This study characterized the fecal bacterial community structure and inter-individual variation in 30-week-old Duroc pigs, which are known for their excellent meat quality. Pyrosequencing of the V1-V3 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA genes generated 108,254 valid reads and 508 operational taxonomic units at a 95% identity cut-off (genus level). Bacterial diversity and species richness as measured by the Shannon diversity index were significantly greater than those reported previously using denaturation gradient gel electrophoresis; thus, this study provides substantial information related to both known bacteria and the untapped portion of unclassified bacteria in the population. The bacterial composition of Duroc pig fecal samples was investigated at the phylum, class, family, and genus levels. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes predominated at the phylum level, while Clostridia and Bacteroidia were most abundant at the class level. This study also detected prominent inter-individual variation starting at the family level. Among the core microbiome, which was observed at the genus level, Prevotella was consistently dominant, as well as a bacterial phylotype related to Oscillibacter valericigenes, a valerate producer. This study found high bacterial diversity and compositional variation among individuals of the same breed line, as well as high abundance of unclassified bacterial phylotypes that may have important functions in the growth performance of Duroc pigs.

  • This study was carried out to classify vegetation structure of the Anseong district in the Deogyusan National Park from May 2007 to September 2008 using the gradient analyses and phytosociological method. The vegetation communities were classified into Quercus mongolica, Carpinus laxiflara, Q. serrata, Fraxinus mandshurica, Betula davurica, B. costata, Pinus densiflora and Abies koreana. Characteristics of the vegetation such as species composition, layer structure, vegetation ratio, and the distribution of individual trees by DBH were significantly different among communities. The order of important value of the forest community with DBH 2cm above plants was Q. mongolica (40.02), C. laxiflora (25.65), Q. serrata (24.68), F. mandshurica (21.66), P. densiflora (19.12), Acer pseudosieboldianum (16.96), C. cordata (11.87), B. davurica (11.66), B. costata (10.90), Styrax obassia (10.90) and A. koreana (10.41). Distribution of DBH P. densiflora had a formality distribution, suggesting a continuous domination of these species over the other species for the time being. In contrast, F. mandshurica appeared limited to the valley of the sheet and a higher frequency of young individuals, suggesting a continuous domination of these species the development of a climax forest terrain. This study showed the correlation between each community and the environment according to DCCA ordination. The A. koreana community predominated on the northern slope of the park in the high elevation habitats which had many O-M. F. mandshurica community predominated in the highest elevation habitats which had many Moisture, EX-Cation and T-N. The P. densiflora community mainly occurred on the southern slope of the park in the low elevation habitats which had few Moisture, O-M and T-N. The Q. serrata community and C. laxifiora community appeared on the park in the middle habitats.

  • A new composition of standardized Scutellariae Radix extract (HPO12) was developed for treatment of Alzheimer's disease. For the preclinical pharmacokinetic study of HPO12, a rapid, sensitive, and selective LCMS/MS method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of 4 bioactive compounds, baicalein, baicalin, wogonin, and wogonoside. After extraction with ethylacetate, chromatographic analysis was performed on a Thermo $C_{18}$ column ($150mm{\times}2.1mm$, $3{\mu}m$) with a mobile phase consisting of 0.1% formic acid (A) and 0.1% formic acid in 95% acetonitrile (B) by using gradient elution at a flow rate of $250{\mu}L/min$. Analytes introduced to a mass spectrometer were monitored by multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) in positive ion mode. Using $25{\mu}L$ of plasma sample, the method was validated over the following concentration ranges: 25-5000 ng/mL for baicalein, 20-40000 ng/mL for baicalin, 1-1000 ng/mL for wogonin, and 5-10000 ng/mL for wogonoside. The intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy of the quality control samples at the 4 concentrations showed $\leq$ 13.7% relative standard deviation (RSD) and 86.6-105.5% accuracy. The method was successfully applied to determine the concentrations of baicalein, baicalin, wogonin, and wogonoside in rat plasma after intraperitoneal and oral administrations of HPO12.
