  • In this paper, we evaluated the flexural performance of three types of reinforced concrete beams (SHCC-RB, SHCC-SB, SHCC-FRP) strengthened with ordinary steel rebar, very high strength (super strength) rebar, and FRP bars together with strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC). For this purpose, a series of beam specimens were manufactured and four-point load bending experiments were performed. As a result of the experiment, all specimens strengthened with SHCC exhibited tightly controlled flexural microcrakcs with the crack width of less than 100 ㎛. This is mostly due to the material properties of SHCC showing tensile strain hardening properties with multiple microcracks under uniaxial tension. The specimen SHCC-FRP showed lower initial cracking moment and yield flexural strength than SHCC-RB, whereas the maximum flexural strength of SHCC-FRP was superior to that of SHCC-RC. This is because the tensile strength of FRP bars is higher than that of ordinary steel reabr. The initial cracking moment of the beam specimen SHCC-SB was similar to that of SHCC-RB, but the yield flexural strength and maximum flexural strength of SHCC-SB were evaluated to be the highest.

  • The grain orientation distribution and grain boundary characterization of $ZrB_2$-ZrC composites sintered by a SPS(Spark Plasma Sintering) method, a new sintering technique were analyzed by the EBSP technique and then their crystallographic results have been compared with those of a sintered specimen using a PLS(Pressureless Sintering) method. In the $ZrB_2$-ZrC composite manufactured by SPS, (0001) planes of $ZrB_2$ were oriented in the direction normal to the specimen surface. In the case of PLS, those of $ZrB_2$ were oriented normal to the electron beam. In both cases of PLS and SPS, ZrC grains had the randomly oriented grain structure. The grain boundary characterization showed that low angle grain boundaries in the PLS and SPS processed materials constituted about 10% and 8% of the total number of boundaries, respectively, represented the only slight difference between the proportion of low angle grain boundary. However, in the distribution of CSL(Coincident Site Lattice) boundaries, it was shown the higher proportion of CSL boundaries with $\Sigma$ 3,5,7,9, 11 in the SPS processed material.

  • The objective of this study is to develop polymer-impregnated concrete(PIC), which is a newly developed composite material made by impregnating polymer impregnanls into hardened normal concrete, and to develop analytical techniques for its proper applications. Crystalline methyl methacrylate(MMA) is chosen as a monomer of polymer impregnants. The corrlpositions of polymer impregnants and producing processes are developed by analyzing the effects of penetration, polymerization, thermal safety, and strengthening characteristics. On t he basis of experimental results of this study, various strength characteristics and stress strain constitutive relations are formulated in terms of the compressive strength of normal concrete and the polymer loadings, which can be applied for analysis and design of PIC members. In order to provide a model for fracture analysis of flexural members, fracture toughness, fracture energy, critical crack width, and tension softening relations near crack tip are also formulated in terms of member depth, initial notch depth, and the flexural strength of normal concrete. The structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program developed in the study are applicable to evaluate elastic behavior, ultimate strength, and tension softening behavior of MMA type PIC structural members subject to various loading conditions. The accuracy and effectiveness of the developed computer program is examined by comparing the anal ytical results with the experimental results. Therefore, it is concluded that the developed structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program are applicable to analysis and design of in-situ and precast PIC structural members.

  • In this paper, a total of 13 beams with bonding, anchorage system, amount of prestressing and span length as variables of experiment were tested in flexural test and analyzed in finite element analysis; one control beam, two simplified FRP-boned beams, four prestressed FRP-unbonded beams and four prestressed FRP-bonded beams. Also, a nonlinear finite element analysis of beams in the flexural test is performed by DIANA program considered material nonlinear of concrete, reinforcement and the interfacial bond-slip model between concrete and CFRP plates. The failure mode of prestressed CFRP plated-beams is not debonding but FRP rupture. RC members strengthened with external bonded prestressed CFRP plates occurred 1st and 2nd debonding of the composite material. After the debonding of CFRP plates occurs in bonded system, behavior of bonded CFRP-plated beams change into that of unbonded CFRP-plated beams due to fix of the anchorage system. Also, It was compared flexural test results and analytical results of RC members strengthened with CFRF plates. The ductility of beams strengthened by CFRP plates with the anchorage system is considered high with the ductility index of above 3. Analysis results showed a good agreement with experiment results in the debonding load, yield load and ultimate load.

  • This research aims to investigate the superstructure characteristics of the CFRP-yachts whose hulls are made of the light-weight material CFRP. CFRP-yachts, which belong to light-weight yachts, have a tendency of having very small superstructures compared to other vessels of the same length, and such a tendency is closely related to stability. In this research, a comparison of shape characteristics was made between common composite-plastic yachts and CFRP-yachts to find out the shape characteristics of CFRP-yacht. In the meantime, a case study was conducted concerning shape changes in superstructure to understand the effect of such changes on stability. For this purpose the shapes of a total of 10 GFRP-yachts and CFRP-yachts were comparatively analyzed, and the result showed the tendency of their hulls and superstructures. Whereas the case study on stability assessment involved various superstructure shapes of CFRP yachts, for assessment by superstructure size. Stability assessment was according to ISO 12217 (Small craft Stability and buoyancy assessment and categorization). A program was also developed based on stability assessment process due to rolling in beam waves and wind, and it was applied to the case study. The result of the case study showed that the windage area distribution tendency of the yachts whose hulls were made of the light-weight material CFRP was similar to that of the GFRP-yachts, but that the superstructure shapes of the CFRP-yachts were about 50% smaller than those of the GFRP-yachts. In addition, the stability assessment involving various superstructure areas of the CFRP-yachts showed that problems with stability occurred when their superstructure sizes were similar to, or larger by about 10% than, those of the GFRP-yachts.
