A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is introduced for the solution of elastostatic problems in an unbounded isotropic elastic solid containing multiple isotropic elliptical fibers of arbitrary orientation subject to uniform stress at infinity. The fibers are assumed to be long parallel elliptical cylinders composed of isotropic elastic material perfectly bonded to the isotropic matrix. The solid is assumed to be under plane strain on the plane normal to the cylinders. A detailed analysis of the stress field at the matrix-fiber interface for square and hexagonal packing of the fibers is carried out for different values of the number, orientation angles and concentration of the elliptical fibers. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are examined through comparison with results obtained from analytical and finite element methods.

This paper describes experiments aimed at characterizing the behavior of field electron emitters fabricated by coating carbon fibers with epoxylite resin. Polyacrylonitrile carbon fibers of type VPR-19, thermally treated at $2,800^{\circ}C$, were used. Each was initially prepared in a "uncoated" state, by standard electro polishing and cleaning techniques, and was then examined in a scanning electron microscope. The fiber was then baked overnight in a field electron microscope (FEM) vacuum chamber. Current-voltage characteristics and FEM images were recorded on the following day or later. The fiber was then removed from the FEM, coated with resin, "cured" by baking, and replaced in the FEM. After another overnight bake, the FEM characterization measurements were repeated. The coated fibers had significantly better performance than uncoated fibers. This confirms the results of earlier experiments, and is thought to be due in part to the formation of a conducting channel in the resin over layer. For the coated fiber, lower voltages were needed to obtain the same emission current. The coated fibers have current-voltage characteristics that show smoother trends, with greater stability and repeatability. No switch-on phenomena were observed. In addition, the emission images on the phosphor-coated FEM screen were more concentrated, and hence brighter.
Carbon fibers were coated with carboxy modified poly(hydroxy ether)(C-PHE, water dispersed), water soluble polymers poly(hydroxy ether ethanol amine)(PHEA) or water insoluble poly(hydroxy ether)(PHE). Interfacial shear strength of polymer coated carbon fibers was measured by micro-droplet tests with vinyl ester resin, and approximately 30 samples were tested. The interfacial adhesion of poly-mers to carbon fibers was also evaluated, and diffusion behavior of polymer films in vinyl ester resin was investigated. The carbon fibers after testing and diffusion samples were analysed by SEM in order to understand adhesion mechanism. Interfacial shear strength of carbon fibers was enhanced by the coating of PHE and C-PHE which have good or marginal solubility in vinyl ester resin, respectively, but not by the coating of PHEA possibly due to the poor solubility in vinyl ester resin.

Biocomposites were fabricated with biodegradable polymers and natural fibers. Biocomposites have benefits of low cost, low density, and biodegradability over inorganic fiber composite, and give comparable strength properties. Hydrophobic polymer used for sizing in paper industry, AKD (Akenyl Keten Dimer), was applied to natural fibers, red algae fibers (RAF) in this study, to make fiber surfaces more compatible to hydrophobic nature of matrix polymers. Composites with RAF, kenaf, glass fibers, and carbon fibers have been fabricated by a compression molding method and their thermo-mechanical properties have been studied. Also, the thermal dimensional stability test was done from at 30 to $100^{\circ}C$. The storage moduli and the thermo-mechanical stabilities of polypropylene and poly lactic acid based biocomposites were improved by reinforcing with the RAF and much more with AKD treated fibers. Dimensional stability of biocomposite was also markedly improved by AKD pretrement on RAF.
The purpose of this study is to prepare a high-strength Fiberglass Reinforced Metal (FRM). Aluminum covering over carbon fibers (CF) was made to increase their wettability to molten aluminum. A cylindrical sputtering apparatus was used for the covering. One tow of carbon fibers was placed along the central axis of the cylindrical target. Aluminum was uniformly coated around the carbon fiber tow. But in case of CF without sizing treatment, aluminum spread into the inside of the tow. Preforms of carbon fiber/aluminum composite were made by impregnating carbon fiber with molten aluminum. Contact angle of molten aluminum to the aluminum-coated carbon fiber was about $30^{\circ}$. The fractured section of preform was observed by SEM, which showed that molten aluminum wetted the outer part of the tow well but had not penetrated into the center, and that adhesion between CF and aluminum matrix was in good condition.

In this study, composites with polypropylene(PP) and Jute fiber were prepared by compression molding technique. Generally, hydrophilic jute fibers do not adhere well to PP, which is hydrophobic. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene(MAPP) had been widely used as a coupling agent to improve the bonding between ligno-cellulosic fibers and PP. The coupling agent improved the tensile and flexural properties when the mechanical properties were tested by using a UTM. The mechanical properties of natural fiber composites(NFCs) by modified thermoplastics were higher than those of NFCs by unmodified thermoplastics. Fracture surfaces of the composites and the fiber orientations were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical performance of NFCs by modified thermoplastics appeared to be improved by the enhanced interface adhesion between the fiber and the matrix.

The paper presents a numerical study to evaluate the phase velocities and attenuations of the average longitudinal and shear ultrasonic waves resulting from multiple scattering in fiber-reinforced composites. A computational procedure developed in this work is first used to produce a random, yet largely even distribution of fibers. Both the viscoelastic epoxy matrix and lossless randomly distributed graphite fibers are modeled using the mass-spring-dashpot lattice model, with no damping for the latter. By numerically simulating ultrasonic through-transmission tests using this direct model of composites, phase velocities and attenuations of the longitudinal and shear waves through the composite are found as functions of frequency or fiber concentration. The numerical results are observed to generally agree with the corresponding results in the literature. Discrepancies found in some detail aspects, particularly in the attenuation results, are also addressed.

An analytical model has been developed to predict the elastic properties of a filled resin reinforced by chopped fibers, a three-phase composite such as a filled sheet molding compound(SMC). In the model the matrix material and fillers form an effective matrix. The effective matrix is then considered to be reinforced with long fibers lying in the sheet plane but randomly oriented in the plane. Expressions for the resulting transversely isotropic composite properties are explicitly presented. Using this model, the Young's and shear moduli are calculated for the SMC sample with filler weight fraction of 35% and fiber content of 30%. The same properties are also determined experimentally. The agreement between the calculated and measured elastic moduli is found to be very good for the in-plane properties. However, the out-of-plane properties show a large difference because the effect of voids is not taken into account in the model.

Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) were considered a new technology for the construction industry. However today this technology has found wider acceptance among the construction industry. Currently, steel fibres are used in varied segments in many application areas across different segments in the construction industry, especially in tunneling, airports, warehouses, etc. Time and safety are the main factors are among the various advantages which renders steel fibres superior to the competing product. For fibers reinforcing, The maximum load carrying capacity is controlled by fibers pulling out of the composite because fiber reinforcing does not have a deformed surface like larger steel reinforcing bars. The study demonstrated that above concept is applicable and effective in concrete structure by analytical study. The analytical result appears that SFRP have the potential to significantly increase the strength of existing concrete structures, while at the same time dramatically improving their fracture energy characteristics.
The article presents the methodology for finding material damping capacity at higher frequency and at relatively lower amplitudes. The Lamb wave dispersion theory and loss less finite element model is used to find the damping capacity of composite materials. The research has been focused on high frequency applications materials. The method was implemented on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) plates. The Lamb waves were generated using ultrasonic pulse generator setup. The hybrid method has been explored in this article and the results have been compared with bandwidth methods available in the literature.
