  • With the continuing demand for lightweight bicycles, carbon fiber composite materials have been widely used in manufacturing bicycle frames and components. Unlike general isotropic materials, the structural characteristics of composite materials are strongly influenced by the staking directions and sequences of composite laminates. Thus, to verify the design process of bicycles manufactured using composites, structural analysis is considered essential. In this study, a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) bicycle frame was designed and its structural behavior was investigated using finite element analysis (FEA). By measuring the failure indices of the fiber and matrix under various stacking sequences and loading conditions, the effect of the stacking condition of composite laminates on the strength of the bicycle structure was examined. In addition, the structural safety of the bicycle frame can be enhanced by reinforcing weak regions prone to failure using additional composite laminates.

  • Cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges are divided into three cross sections of non-composite, partially composite, and fully composite sections, according to their composite characteristics. The Korean provision for the partially and fully composite sections specifies general usage of the stud of shear connectors, whereas the one for the non-composite section specifies empirical usage of slab anchors. However, the actual behavior of the cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors is close not to the non-composite action, but to the partially composite action. Therefore analytical and experimental studies on partial composites of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors are performed in this study. Intial stiffness of the slab anchor is obtained by the experimental study for the first time, and the composite characteristic of simple-span and two-span continuous steel-plate girder bridges is investigated by the finite element analyses for the second time. Based on the obtained initial stiffness, the reduction effect of tensile stresses in the concrete-slab on the intermediate support of the continuous bridge is also considered herein.

  • Distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator system has been designed for the active vibration control of shell structure. PVDF is used for the materials of sensor/actuator. To prevent the adverse effect of spillover, distributed modal sensor/actuator system is established. Although shell structure is three-dimensional structure, the PVDF sensor/actuator system can be treated as two-dimensional Finite element programs are developed to consider curved structures having PVDF modal sensor/actuator. The nine-node Mindlin shell element with five nodal degree of freedoms is used for finite element discretization. The electrode patterns and lamination angle of PVDF sensor/actuator are optimized to design the modal sensor/actuator system Genetic algorithm is used for optimization. Sensor is designed to minimize the observation spillover, and actuator is designed to minimize the system energy of the control modes under a given initial condition. Modal sensor/actuator for the first and second modes of singly curved cantilevered shell structure are designed using mentioned methods. Discrete LQG method is used as a control law. Experimental demonstrations of the active vibration control with designed sensor/actuator system have been performed successfully.

  • This paper is presented for the analysis results of the bending problems of the anisotropic cylindrical shells. In the numerical analysis of various mechanical problems involving complex partial differential equations, Finite element method is used to analyze the governing equations of anisotropic cylindrical shells. Both thin shell theory and thick shell theory are used as the basic governing equations of bending problems in the anisotropic cylindrical shells. The analysis results are compared between the anisotropic thick cylindrical shells and the anisotropic thin cylindrical shells. The results of this study will be contribute to analyze the bending behavior of anisotropic cylindrical shells.

  • Unidirectional fiber-metal matrix composites have superior mechanical properties along the longitudinal direction. However, the applicability of continuous fiber reinforced MMCs is somewhat limited due to their relatively poor transverse properties. Therefore, the transverse properties of MMCs are significantly influenced by the properties of the fiber/matrix interface. In this study, the interfacial stress states of transversely loaded unidirectional fiber reinforced metal matrix composites investigated by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Different fiber volume fractions $(5-60\%)$ were studied numerically. The interface was treated as thin layer (with different properties) with a finite thickness between the fiber and the matrix. The fiber is modeled as transversely isotropic linear-elastic, and the matrix as isotropic elastic-plastic material. The analyses were based on a two-dimensional generalized plane strain model of a cross-section of an unidirectional composite by the ANSYS finite element analysis code.

  • In this paper, we present the result of investigations pertaining to the development of the floating type photovoltaic energy generation system. Pultruded FRP has superior mechanical and physical properties compared with those of conventional structural materials. Since the FRP has an excellent corrosion-resistance and high specific strength and stiffness, the FRP material may be highly appreciated for the development of the floating type photovoltaic energy generation system. In the paper, we discussed the development concepts of the floating type photovoltaic energy generation system, briefly. The mechanical properties of the FRP structural member used in the development are investigated through the tensile and compression tests. Test results are used in the finite element analysis and the design of the system. In addition, bolted connections of the members are briefly discussed and the strengths of FRP bolted connections are estimated based on the results of experiments. The experimental results are compared with the finite element analysis results and discussed briefly. The floating type photovoltaic energy generation system is designed, fabricated, and installed successfully in site.

  • In the present study, nonlinear dynamic response of polymer-CNT-fiber multiscale nanocomposite plate resting on elastic foundations in thermal environments using the finite element method is performed. In this regard, the governing equations are derived based on Inverse Hyperbolic Shear Deformation Theory and von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ geometrical nonlinearity. Three type of distribution of temperature through the thickness of the plate namely, uniform linear and nonlinear are considered. The considered element is C1-continuous with 15 DOF at each node. The effective material properties of the multiscale composite are calculated using Halpin-Tsai equations and fiber micromechanics in hierarchy. The carbon nanotubes are assumed to be uniformly distributed and randomly oriented through the epoxy resin matrix. Five types of impulsive loads are considered, namely the step, sudden, triangular, half-sine and exponential pulses. After examining the validity of the present work, the effects of the weight percentage of SWCNTs and MWCNTs, nanotube aspect ratio, volume fraction of fibers, plate aspect, temperature, elastic foundation parameters, distribution of temperature and shape of impulsive load on nonlinear dynamic response of CNT reinforced multi-phase laminated composite plate are studied in details.

  • The finite element stress analysis of large sized rectangular water tank structures made of stainless steel materials is carried out for various combined load cases. The combined load cases for a large size of 5,000ton are further determined using the specification(KS B6283) established from the Korean Standards Association. The changed water capacity due to the size of reservoirs could be heavily dependent for evaluating seismic effects, especially for large reservoirs. For the better numerical efficiency, the rectangular panels are modelled using the ANSYS ADPL module. The numerical results obtained for different load cases mainly show the effect of the interactions between the different load combination and other various parameters, for example, the water capacity, and different stainless steel materials. The structural performance for various load combinations is also evaluated.

  • A $C^{0}$ continuous displacement finite element method based on a higher-order shear deformation theory is employed in the prediction of the transient response of laminated composite plates subjected to low-velocity impact. A modified contact law was applied to calculate the contact force during impact. The discrete element chosen is a nine-noded quadrilateral with 5 degree-of-freedom per node. The Wilson-.theta. time integration algorithm is used for solving the time dependent equations of the impactor and the central difference method was adopted to perform time integration of the plate. Numerical results, including the contact force history, deflection, and velocity history, are presented. Comparisons of numerical results using a higher order theory and a first-order theory show that using a higher order theory provides more accurate results. Effects of boundary condition, impact velocity, and mass of the impactors are also discussed.d.

  • In this paper is presented the solution method for three-dimensional problem of transversely isotropic body's elastoplastic deformation by the finite element method (FEM). The process of problem solution consists of: determining the effective parameters of a transversely isotropic medium; construction of the finite element mesh of the body configuration, including the determination of the local minimum value of the tape width of non-zero coefficients of equation systems by using of front method; constructing of the stiffness matrix coefficients and load vector node components of the equation for an individual finite element's state according to the theory of small elastoplastic deformations for a transversely isotropic medium; the formation of a resolving symmetric-tape system of equations by summing of all state equations coefficients summing of all finite elements; solution of the system of symmetric-tape equations systems by means of the square root method; calculation of the body's elastoplastic stress-strain state by performing the iterative process of the initial stress method. For each problem solution stage, effective computational algorithms have been developed that reduce computational operations number by modifying existing solution methods and taking into account the matrix coefficients structure. As an example it is given, the problem solution of fibrous composite straining in the form of a rectangle with a system of circular holes.
