Purpose: We research on the efficient response surface methodology(RSM) design to develop a design space in Quality by Design(QbD). We propose practical designs for the successful construction of the design space in QbD by allowing different number of replicates at the box points, star points, and the center point in the rotatable central composite design(CCD). Methods: The fraction of design space(FDS) plot is used to compare designs efficiency. The FDS plot shows the fraction of the design space over which the relative standard error of predicted mean response lies below a given value. We search for practical designs whose minimal half-width of the tolerance interval per a standard deviation is less than 4.5 at 0.8 fraction of the design space. Results: The practical designs for the number of factors between two and five are listed. One of the designs in the list could be chosen depending on the experimental budget restriction. Conclusion: The designs with box points replications are more efficient than those with the star points replication. The sequential method to establish a design space is illustrated with the simulated data based on the two examples in RSM.
This paper provides a test of the composite hypothesis that a random sample is (two parameter) gamma distributed when both the scale and shape parameters are estimated from the data. The test statistic is a variant of the usual Anderson-Darling statistic, the primary difference being that the statistic is based on the maximum likelihood estimator of the shape parameter of the assumed gamma distribution. The percentage points are developed via simulation and are presented graphically. Examples are provided.
Piecewise Integrated Composite (PIC) beam is composed of different stacking against loading type depending upon location. The aim of current study is to assign robust stacking sequences against external loading to every corresponding part of the PIC beam based on the value of stress triaxiality at generated reference points using the k-NN (k-Nearest Neighbor) classification, which is one of representative machine learning techniques, in order to excellent superior bending characteristics. The stress triaxiality at reference points is obtained by three-point bending analysis of the Al beam with training data categorizing the type of external loading, i.e., tension, compression or shear. Loading types of each plane of the beam were classified by independent plane scheme as well as total beam scheme. Also, loading fidelities were calibrated for each case with the variation of hyper-parameters. Most effective stacking sequences were mapped into the PIC beam based on the k-NN classification model with the highest loading fidelity. FE analysis result shows the PIC beam has superior external loading resistance and energy absorption compared to conventional beam.

In this study we developed an integrated precast concrete decks for a rapid construction. The structural performance in the integrated precast bridge decks is evaluated by real-scale test bed and detailed finite element analyses. The numerical analysis results were compared with the experimental data from a real-scaled single-span precast/prestressed concrete bridge decks under truck loading. Parametric studies are focused on the various effects of external loads on the structural behavior for different locations and measuring points on the precast bridge decks. The assessment in this study indicates that the integrated precast bridge decks show an excellent structural performance as expected.

Response Surface Method (RSM) constructs approximate response surfaces using sample data from experiments or simulations and finds optimum levels of process variables within the fitted response surfaces of the interest region. It will be necessary to get the most suitable response surface for the accuracy of the optimization. The application of RSM plan experimental designs. The RSM is used in the sequential optimization process. The first goal of this study is to improve the plan of central composite designs of experiments with various locations of axial points. The second is to increase the optimal efficiency applying a modified method to update interest regions.
In this paper, a model updating technique in dynamics is used to identify elastic properties for pultruded GFRP-Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic framed structural systems used in civil construction. Traditional identification techniques for composite materials may be expensive, while this alternative approach allows to identify several properties simultaneously, with very good precision. Furthermore, the procedure of a non-destructive type has a relatively simple implementation. Properties describing the mechanical behavior for beam and shell finite element modeling are identified. The used formulation is based on the minimization of eigensolution residuals. Important points concerning model updating procedures have been observed, such as the particular vibrational behavior of the test structure, the modeling strategies and the optimal placement of the sensors in the experimental procedure. Results obtained by experimental tests show the efficiency of the proposed procedure.
The effect of Chitosan (CS), Carbon Nanotube (CNT) and hybrid (CS-CNT) fillers on the natural frequency of drilled composite plate is investigated by experimentally in this study. The numerical validation is also made with a program based on Finite Element Method (SolidWorks). Nine types filled and one neat composite plates are used in the study. The fillers ratios are 1% CS, 2% CS, 3% CS, 0.1% CNT, 0.2% CNT, 0.3% CNT, 1% CS+0.3% CNT, 2% CS+0.3% CNT, 3% CS+0.3% CNT. The specimens cut to certain sizes by water jet from the plates 400 mm × 400 mm in dimensions. Some of them are drilled in certain dimensions with drill. The natural frequency of each specimen is measured by the vibration test set up to determine the vibration characteristic. The vibration test set up includes an accelerometer, a current source power unit, a data acquisition card and a computer. A code is written in Matlab® program for the signal processing. The study are investigated and discussed in four main points to understand the effect of the fillers on the natural frequency of the composite plate. These are the effect of fillers contents and amounts, orientation angles of fibers, holes numbers and holes sizes. As results, the natural frequency of the plate with 1% CS and 0.1% CNT hybrid filler is lower than those of the plates with other fillers ratios for 45° orientation angle. Besides, in the composite plate with 0° orientation angle, the natural frequency increases with increasing the filler ratio. Moreover, the natural frequency increases until a certain hole number and then it decreases. Furthermore, the natural frequency is not affected until a certain hole diameter but then it decreases.

The paper deals with a procedure for constructing a composite surface interpolating a polygonal curve mesh defined from 3D scattered points. The procedure consists of a poly-angulation, construction of a curve net, and interpolation of the curve net. The poly-angulation contains a stage that changes a triangular edge net obtained from a triangulation into a poly-angular edge net. A curve net is constructed by replacing edges on the edge net with cubic Bezier curves. Finally, inside of an n-sided polygon is interpolated by n subdivided triangular subpatches. The method interpolates given point data with relatively few triangular subpatches. For an n-sided polygon, our method constructs an interpolant with n subdivided triangular subpatches while the existing triangular surface modeling needs 3(n-2) subpatches. The obtained surface is composed of quartic triangular patches which are $G^1$-continuous to adjacent patches.

This paper describes a procedure of generating economic cutter-location(CL) data for the machining of sculptured surfaces on a multi-axis NC milling machine. Measures of economy are the machining time (cutter move distance) and the length of NC tape (number of CL data points). The presented procedure minimizes both the number of CL data and the total distance of cutter moves, for a given cutter (spherical end-mill) size and parameteric cutting direction, while satisfying given tolerance requirements. The procedure has been implemented in FORTRAN for a smooth composite Bezier surface. The maximum allowable cutter size is calculated by the program so that a user can choose a cutter size. CL data can be generated in both parametric directions u and v. Experimental results show that there are significant differences between the parametric directions, and that cutter size should be as large as possible in order to minimize the cutting time and NC tape length.
The accurate official map of air temperature does not exist for the Hawaiian Islands due to the limited number of weather stations on the rugged volcanic landscape. To alleviate the major problem of temperature mapping, satellite-measured land surface temperature (LST) data were used as an additional source of sample points. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) system provides hypertemperal LST data, and LST pixel values that were frequently observed (${\ge}$14 days during a 32-day composite period) had a strong, consistent correlation with air temperature. Systematic grid points with a spacing of 5km, 10km, and 20km were generated, and LST-derived air temperature estimates were extracted for each of the grid points and used as input to inverse distance weighted (IDW) and cokriging methods. Combining temperature data and digital elevation model (DEM), cokriging significantly improved interpolation accuracy compared to IDW. Although a cokriging method is useful when a primary variable is cross-correlated with elevation, interpolation accuracy was sensitively influenced by the seasonal variations of weather conditions. Since the spatial variations of local air temperature are more variable in the wet season than in the dry season, prediction errors were larger during the wet season than the dry season.
