  • One of the key issues in acoustic emission (AE) during hydroproof test of filament-wound composite rocket motor cases is the determination of the optimal component of elastic wave to be monitored. To solve this problem, broadband ultrasonic wave was generated into a symmetrically filament-wound composite motor case, and was received at 105 different locations after the propagation through the composite case with different distances and directions. By analysis of the received signals, characteristics of elastic wave propagation such as frequency components, the maximum propagating distance, and velocity surface were investigated. This analysis was performed for two different conditions of the motor case; air-filled and hydraulically pressurized. Based on these information, the effect of hydraulic pressure on the wave propagation characteristics was investigated and furthermore, the optimal component of elastic wave for AE during hydroproof test of the motor case was successfully determined.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface hardness of composite resins according to heat treatment. storage condition and storage time. In this study. two kinds of composite resin inlays and one kind of conventional posterior composite resin were used as experimental materials. One hundred eighty composite resin specimens were constructed from composite resin inlays and conventional posterior composite resin. The conditions of this study were heat treatment. storage condition and storage time. Hardness readings were taken from the top surface of each samples using the Vickers microhardness tester(MHT-l. Matsuzawa. Japan}. The following results from this study were obtained: 1. Regardless of storage condition. both composite resin inlay and conventional posterior composite resin have a higher surface hardness under heat treatment than not. 2. Composite resins with heat treatment have a higher surface hardness under dry storage than under water immersion. 3. In case of Clearfil Photo Posterior and Brilliant Enamel with heat treatment. there was no significant difference with time. but Clearfil CR Inlay with heat treatment. there was statistical difference after 24 hours. 4. Surface hardness of composite resins with coarse hybrid type was higher than that of composite resin with fine hybrid type.

  • In the case of seismic-resistant composite dual moment resisting and eccentrically braced frames, the current design practice is to avoid the disposition of shear connectors in the expected plastic zones, and consequently to consider a symmetric moment or shear plastic hinges, which occur only in the steel beam or link. Even without connectors, the real behavior of the hinge may be different from the symmetric assumption since the reinforced concrete slab is connected to the steel element close to the hinge locations, and also due to contact friction between the concrete slab and the steel element. At a larger level, the structural response in the case of important seismic motions depends directly on the elasto-plastic behavior of elements and hinges. The numerical investigation presented in this study summarizes the results of elasto-plastic analyses of several steel frames, considering the interaction of the steel beam with the concrete slab. Several parameters, such as the inter-story drift, plastic rotation requirements and behavior factors q were monitored. In order to obtain accurate results, adequate models of plastic hinges are proposed for both the composite short link and composite reduced beam sections.

  • This paper predicts the spring-in effect of curved laminated composite structure for various stacking sequence using finite element analysis(ABAQUS). In composite manufacturing process, large temperature difference, different coefficient of thermal expansion and chemical shrinkage effect cause distortion of composite parts such as spring-in and warpage. Distortion of composite structure is important issue on quality of product, and it should be considered in manufacturing process. In finite element analysis, a CHILE(Cure Hardening Instantaneously Linear Elastic) model and chemical shrinkage effects are considered developing user subroutine in ABAQUS and some cases are simulated.

  • In the present study, the focus is on the synthesis of titanium carbide/cobalt composite powder by the spray thermal conversion process using metallic salt solution as the raw materials. Two types of oxide powders of Ti-Co-O system were prepared by the spray drying of two types of metallic salt solutions : titanium chloride-cobalt nitrate and $TiO_2$ powder-cobalt nitrate solutions. These oxide powders were mixed with carbon black, and then these mixtures were carbothermal reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixtures during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TG-DTA. In the case of using the titanium chloride-cobalt nitrate solution, it could not be obtained TiC/Co composite powder due to contamination of the impurities during the spray drying of the solution. However, in tile case of using the $TiO_2$ powder-cobalt nitrate scullion, TiC-15 wt. %Co composite powder could be synthesized by the spray thermal conversion process. The synthesized TiC-15 wt. %Co composite powder at 120$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours has average particle size of 150 nm.

  • The mechanical properties of composite materials may degrade severely in the presence of damage. Especially, the high-velocity impact such as bird strike, a hailstorm, and a small piece of tire or stone during high taxing, can cause sever damage to the structures and sub-system in spite of a very small mass. However, it is not easy to detect the damage in composite plates using a single technique or any conventional methods. In this paper, the PYDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensors and strain gages were used for monitoring impact damage initiation and propagation in composite laminates. The WT(wavelet transform) and STFT(short time Fourier transform) are used to decompose the sensor signals. A ultrasonic C-scan and a digital microscope are also used to examine the extent of the damage in each case. This research demonstrate how various sensing techniques, PVDF sensor in particular, can be used to characterize high-velocity impact damage in advanced composites.

  • In this research, for the smart health monitoring of the hydrogen storage high pressure composite vessel, the feasibility study of an embedded fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor is carried out. To verify strain measurement in various temperature environment which is needed for the hydrogen pressure vessel, tensile test of a composite specimen with both an embedded FBG sensor and a strain gauge is made in low temperature. Before we try a real-size hydrogen storage pressure vessel, a small & cheap composite pressure vessel having the same structure is fabricated with embedded FBG sensors and tested. In the case of an aluminum liner inside the vessel, survivability of FBG sensors at the interface is lower than the other areas.

  • When MWK (Multiaxial Warp Knitted Fabric) composites are applied for the structures, the connections of each component using mechanical fastening is needed. The local contact between the bolted joint and the composite laminates may induce high stress concentration or breakdown in the laminates for the mechanical joints. There for, it is strongly required to study the characteristics of mechanically joints of MWK composite laminates. In this study, stress analysis near the hole boundary of MWK composite laminate is conducted with various geometric factors under different loadings. In the case of multi-pin loaded MWK composite laminates, the results show that the types of loadings and geometric factors of mechanical joints have a significant influence on the joint performances.

  • Bentall`s operation for repair of annuloaortic ectasia has been associated with postoperative bleeding and with false aneurysm of the anastomotic site between the coronary orifice and composite graft.Among 5 cases, 2 cases have been operated direct anastomosis between coronary artery and vascular graft.Remained 3 cases have been operated with doughnutlike Teflon felt buttress. The technique of sandwiching the freed button of aortic wall bearing the coronary artery ostium between an outer Teflon felt doughnutlike buttress and the inner composite graft provides a leak-proof anastomosis. We experienced one case reoperation for bleeding at coronary anastomotic site above method.
