  • Fixtures are used in almost all phases of machining and assembly to position and hold a part accurately. The class of fixture which consists of 3 locators and 1 clamp(3L/1C) is known as the minimal set that can provide form closure which is a kinematic constraint condition for preventing all planar motions. This type of fixtures has advantages in terms of the number of fixture elements required, the time for clamping, and so on. However it is not widely used in industry because reliable loading scheme has not been reported. In this paper, we propose a method to load the class of 3L/1C fixtures using compliant motions. The planner is developed for synthesizing compliant motions to achieve precise final fixture configuration in the presence of sensing and control uncertainties. A novel approach to eliminate uncertainty in part orientation by adding one extra fixture element called an aligning pin is proposed.

  • Control of a biped robot which has compliant ankle joints is dealt in this paper. Simulated version of a human ankle joint is built using springs and mechanical constraints, which gives a flexibility of joint and compliance against the touching ground. The biped robot with compliant ankle joints proposed here gives a good contact between its sole and the ground and makes foot landing soft. As a result, installing force sensors for measuring the center of gravity of the biped becomes easier. A motor to drive an ankle joint is not needed which makes legs light. However, the control problem becomes more difficult because the torque of the ankle joint to put the biped in a desired walking gait cannot be provided from the compliant ankle joint. To solve this problem, we proposed a dynamic gait modification method by adjusting the position of a hip joint. Simulation results for the mathematical model of the SD-2 biped in the Ohio State University are given to show the validity of the proposed controller.

  • This paper presents the attitude control of the double inverted pendulum with compliant joint. The biped robot with compliant ankle joint instead of a motor have a good contact between it's sole and ground in the uneven ground. The compliant ankle joint proposed here is composed of springs and mechanical constraint. The lower link is hinged on the plate to free for rotation in the vertical plate. The upper link is connected to the lower link through a DC motor. The DC motor is used to control the posture of the pendulum by adjusting the position of the upper link. The algorithm for controlling a proposed inverted pendulum is nonlinear feedback controller. Simulation with mathematical model are conducted to show the validity of the proposed controller.

  • This paper presents a new control strategy for the position and force control of a flexible manipulator. The governing equation of motion of a two-link flexible manipulator which features a piezoceramic actuator is derived via Hamilton's principle. The control torque of the motor to command desired position and force is determined by a sliding mode controller. This controller is formulated to take account of parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. During the commanded motion, undesirable oscillation is actively suppressed by applying a feedback control voltage to the piezoceramic actuator. Consequently, an accurate compliant motion control of the flexible manipulator is achieved. Computer simulations are undertaken in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methodology.

  • An unified compliant control algorithm to regulate the force by dual arms is proposed, where tow arms are treated as one arm in a kinematic viewpoint. The force error calculated form the information of two force/torque sensors attached to the end of each arm is transferred to minimum actuator coordinates, and then is distributed to total system actuator coordinates. The position adjustment at the total actuator coordinates is computed based on the effective computed based on the effective compliance matrix with respect to total actuator coordinates, which is obtained by coordinate transformation between the task coordinates and the total actuator coordinates. An experiment is carried out for dual arms with asymmetric kinematic structure to control an interaction force between manipulators and the environment. The performances of the proposed control algorithm are experimentally compared to those of dual arms employing master/slave scheme. The proposed compliant control algorithm not only ouperforms other algorithms, but also can be treated as an unified approach n the sense that it can be applied to arbitrary dual arm systems with general kinematic structures.

  • In this paper, a design and control of the safe arm with passive compliant joints(PCJ) is presented. Each PCJ has a magneto- rheological damper and maximum 6 springs. Compliance analysis in Cartesian space is performed with the compliance ellipsoid; this analysis shows a map between compliance in the joint space and compliance in Cartesian space. Vibration control of the arm using an input shaping technique is also presented; the results of a simulation and an experiment prove that a fast motion of the safe arm without residual vibration can be performed.

  • This paper presents a task-based analysis on the number of independent robotic fingers required for compliant manipulations. Based on the stiffness relation between operational space and fingertip space of a multi-fingered object manipulating system, we describe a technique for modulation of the fingertip stiffness without inter-finger coupling so as to achieve the desired stiffness specified in the operational space. Thus, we provides a guide line how many fingers are basically required for successful multi-fingered compliant tasks. Consequently, this paper enables us to assign effectively the number of fingers for various compliant manipulations by robot hands.

  • In this paper, we propose a compliance control scheme using a neurofuzzzy compliance model(NFCM). as a new control paradigm for telerobot systems. A NFCM, used as a compliance controller, is composed of a fuzzy compliance model(FCM), a neural network and a low pass filter. The NFCM is trained through a reinforcement learning algorithm, and then, can generate suitable compliant motion for a given task. A series of simulations have been performed to show applicability of the proposed algorithm send it is found that the NFCM can implement suitable compliant motion for a given task through the learning procedure.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of compliance with supportive periodontal therapy(SPT), to determine if any significant differences existed in the characteristics of compliant, erratically compliant and non-compliant patients and to identify reasons for poor compliance. Materials and methods: Four hundred five patients who initially visited between July 2003 and December 2004 and were treated until June 2005 were retrospectively evaluated for their compliance with SPT in terms of attendance for a recommended schedule of visits. Patients' compliance was classified as complete compliance(attended more than 80% of the recommended appointments), erratic compliance(attended less than 80% of the recommended appointments or discontinued) and non-compliance(did not return for SPT). Analysis was made for each group to correlate the degree of compliance with gender, age, smoking, distance between their houses and the hospital, disease severity, type of therapy, implant, plaque control instruction and systemic diseases. Tele research of erratically compliant and non-compliant patients was carried out to identify reasons for their poor compliance. Results: Only 24.7% of the patients were in complete compliance. The highest drop-out rate(32.4%) occurred in the first year. A significantly greater percentage of non-smokers and patients who finished plaque control instruction were in complete compliance. A significantly greater percentage of patients without implant and patients who had been treated by only scaling and root planing were in non-compliance. More males were found to be compliant with SPT, although this was marginally significant. There were no significant differences between compliant, erratically compliant and non-compliant patients with regard to age, distance, disease severity and systemic disease. The survey revealed that the main reasons for poor compliance with SPT were inconvenient location and insufficient time. Conclusion: Patients' compliance with SPT was poor and the highest drop-out rate(32.4%) occurred in the first year. Significant relationships were found between the degree of compliance and smoking, type of therapy, implant, plaque control instruction and gender.

  • Fish generates large thrust through an oscillating motion with a compliant joint of caudal fin. The compliance of caudal fin affects the thrust generated by the fish. Due to the flexibility of the fish, the fish can generate a travelling wave motion which is known to increase the efficiency of the fish. However, a detailed research on the relationship between the flexible joint and the thrust generation is needed. In this paper, the compliant joint of a caudal fin is implemented in the driving mechanism of a robotic fish. By varying the driving frequency and stiffness of the compliant joint, the relationship between the thrust generation and the stiffness of the flexible joint is investigated. In general, as the frequency increases, the thrust increases. When higher driving frequency is applied, higher stiffness of the flexible joint is needed to maximize the thrust. The bending angles between the compliant joint and the caudal fin are compared with the changes of the thrust in one cycle. This result can be used to design the robotic fish which can be operated at the maximum thrust condition using the appropriate stiffness of the compliant joint.
