In the unlikely of nuclear reactor meltdown, the leaked core melt or corium must be contained in a device called core-catcher so that the corium can be cooled and stabilized. The ex-vessel behavior of corium involves complex physical and chemical mechanisms of flow propagation, heat transfer, and reactions with sacrificial substrates. In this study, the detailed characteristics of corium flow and heat transfer were investigated by using a commercial CFD code for VULCANO VE-U7 test reported in the literature. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) model was used to predict the interfacial surface formation of corium and the surrounding air, and the discrete ordinate model was adopted to calculate radiation between corium and the surroundings. It was found that cooling via radiation through the top surface of corium had a dominant effect on the temperature and viscosity profiles at the front of the corium flow.

In this study, we investigated the effects of a crosslinking agent and a compatibilizer on the mechanical and rheological properties of waste PP and waste ground rubber tire (WGRT) composites. In order to simulate a commercial TPV, the component of waste PP and WGRT was fixed at 30 and 70 wt%, respectively. With the simple addition of SEBS-g-MA into the waste PP/WGRT composites, the tensile strength of the composite was decreased, whereas both the elongation at break and impact strength were significantly increased because of rubbery characteristics of SEBS-g-MA. In order to further improve the properties of the composites, the waste PP/WGRT/SEBS-g-MA composites was revulcanized with dicumyl peroxide (DCP). As expected, mechanical properties of the revulcanized composites was generally improved. Especially, with 15 and 1 phr of SEBS-g-MA and DCP, elongation at break was highest value of about 183% because of the recross-linking of WGRT without chain scission of the main chain. It was found that complex viscosity of the revulcanized composite increased which might verify further vulcanization of the WGRT.
An eddy-resolving free-surface primitive-equation model with nonlinear terrain-following coordinates is established to study the exchange of water masses among the Asian marginal seas and their adjacent waters. A curvilinear coordinate system is used to generate the horizontal grid with a variable resolution for the regional oceans from $5^{\circ}$S to $45^{\circ}$N and $100^{\circ}$E to $155^{\circ}$E. The higher resolution region has about a 10 km by 10 km grid covering the complex geometry of the coastal marginal seas, while the lower resolution region has about a 30 km by 30 km grid covering the eastern Pacific. The model is initialized by the Levitus annual climitology and forced by the monthly mean air-sea fluxes of momentum, heat, and freshwater derived from the Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set. High-resolution and low-viscosity are identified as the key factors for a better representation of the exchange of waters through narrow straits and passages between the marginal seas and their adjacent waters. The dynamics of the loop currents and eddies in the South China Sea and Celebes Sea are examined in detail. It has found that the anticyclonic loop and detached eddies from the Kuroshio through the Luzon Strait play an important role in transporting warm and salty water into the South China Sea, while the cyclonic circulation of the Mindanao Current in the Celebes Sea plays a role in contributing cold water to the Indonesian throughflow. The deep undercurrent of the western Pacific is shown to provide fresher water to the South China Sea and Celebes Sea. These modeling results suggest that the exchange processes via the narrow straits and passages are of fundamental importance to the maintenance of water masses for the marginal sea region.
Alkaline treatment during preparation of anchovy extracts was studied for its changes in some of the physicochemical and sensory qualities. The dried anchovy was blended in 0-0.5N NaOH solutions and then incubated at $60^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. After extraction the suspensions were neutralized and centrifuged. The results showed that the yields of solids and protein were increased by 3-5 fold of those of water extract as alkaline concentration and treatment time increased. The intrinsic viscosity showed little changes for the extracts prepared with 0-0.2N NaOH solution while the extracts prepared with over 0.3N NaOH resulted a initial small decrease followed by a rapid increase to the maximum point. The changes in color expressed as Hunter 'L', 'a' and 'b' values showed that the L value increased rapidly until 3 hours of treatment followed by a decrease, and 'a' and 'b' values were increased a little. The intensities of odor and taste were markedly increased by 2-3 fold for all of the descriptions investigated where clam-like odor and taste and sea complex odor were particularly significant.

Morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of reactive compatabilized blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and Polyamide-6 (PA) containing EGMA copolymer were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), advanced rheometric expansion system (ARES), and universal testing machine (UTM). From the results of thermal analysis by DSC, the melting point of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend was broadened after EGMA was added in the blends, since the enthalpy of melting of the PBT-PA somewhat decreased with the increase of EGMA content. From this result, it is suggested that the EGMA affected to the crystallization behavior and crystallinity of the PBT-PA blends. From SEM micrographs of the 70/30, 50/50, and 30/70 PBT-PA blends, the droplet size of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend was about 0.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ which was smaller than that of the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. The complex viscosity of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend observed to be higher than that of the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. From the results of the morphology and rheological properties for the PBT-PA blends, it is suggested that the compatibility is increased in the 30/70 PBT-PA blend than the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. From the results of mechanical properties, it was found that the tensile strength of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend increased with the increase of EGMA up to 2 phr, while tensile strength of the blend in which EGMA content was higher than 2 phr decreased with the increase of EGMA content. From the results of morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties for the PBT-PA-EGMA blends, it is suggested that the EGMA could be used as a compatibilization role in the blends.

Recently, the vibration and structure-borne noise induced by passing trains are of great concerns, and the floating slab track is highlighted as one of most efficient alternatives to reduce the railway vibration. However, due to the non-linearity and viscosity of rubber spring used in the floating slab track, its dynamic behavior is very complex. In this study, therefore, to simulate the dynamic behavior of floating slab track with a better accuracy, a nonlinear viscoelastic rubber spring model that can be incorporated in commercial finite element analysis codes has been proposed. This model is composed of a combination of elastic spring element, friction element and viscous element, and termed the "generalized friction viscoelastic model(GFVM)". Also, in this study, the method to determine the model parameters of GFVM based on Berg's 5-parameter model was presented. The results of the finite element analysis with this rubber spring model exhibit very good correlation with the test results of a laboratory mock-up test, and the feasibility of GFVM has been verified.
Two methods, precipitation and ultrafiltration, were applied in order to recover platinum group metals(PGM) by complexing them with water-soluble polyelectrolytes, e.g., polyethyleneimine [PEl], poly(2-vinylpyridine) [2-PVP], poly (4-vinylpyridine) [4-PVP], and poly (styrene sulfonic acid) [PSSA]. In the precipitation method, the PGM-polyelectrolyte complex that was formed by mixing first with polybase, e.g.,4-PVP at pH 1 was precipitated by further mixing with polyacid, e.g., PSSA. However, the recovery of PGM obtained by this method was not quantitative(less than 70%). The "sandwiching" binding between the metal anions and two polyelectrolytes was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The XPS studies indicated that the PGM atom was bound with the acdic and basic polyelectrolyte via its oxygen and nitrogen atom, respectively. The recovery of PGM using polyelectrolyte was further studied by ultrafiltration methods as follows : The PGM ions, eomplexed at pH 1 with polyelectrolyte, allowed the applicntion of membrane filtration by virtue of the great differences in molecular weights between PGM and other low molecular weight species. By applying this method, Pd and Pt (ca. $10^{-4}M$) were selectively separated almost quantitatively from coexisting metal ions, e.g., $Cu^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$. The EPR spectra and viscosity measurements indicated that these polyelectrlytes were not bound to $Cu^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ ions at this pH, which provided the basis for selective separation of PGM(Pd, Pt and Rh) from these coexisting ions.
In this study, efforts were made to enhance the mechanical properties of the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fibers of medium molecular weight(number-average degree of polymerization=1735) varying the ratio in $DMSO/H_2O$ mixed solvent and spinning/drawing conditions. The gel fibers prepared from pure DMSO were opaquely frozen in the coagulating bath of $-20^{\circ}C$. However, transparent gel fibers were formed without freezing for the mixture to contain water less than 80wt%. As the amount of water in the mixture increased the residual solvent in the coagulated gel fibers decreased ranging from 85 to 42wt%. The complex viscosity increased with increasing PVA concentration in 80/20 $DMSO/H_2O$ exhibiting remarkable shear thinning at 18wt%. In the Cole-Cole plot, the 18wt% PVA solutions gave a deviated curve from 12 and 15wt% ones. Thus the optimum PVA concentration for the spinning processing of medium MW PVA solutions in 80/20 $DMSO/H_2O$ was determined to 18wt% with rheological concept. Low degree of drawing during hot drawing process in the dry state was available for high bath draft in the coagulation bath. The most improved mechanical properties were observed by applying the highest possible draw ratio attained by reducing bath draft over multi-step drawing process. In the given bath draft, linear relationship was observed between both tensile strength and modulus and draw ratio showing the inflection points at the draw ratio of 19.5 and 18.0 for tensile strength and modulus, respectively.
This study proves the causes of cylinder and piston jam by scratches which is the fatal problem of hydraulic breaker through the thermal analysis and thermal-structural coupled field analysis. The trouble from the scratch is a complex problem which can be caused by manufacturing process (this is an internal factor) and the users mistake or contamination in the hydraulic circuit (these are an external factor). Hence, it's not easy to investigate the causes, also hard to prevent the recurrence. In this reason, hydraulic breaker manufacturers are trying to improve the manufacturing process such as machining, heat treatment, grinding, cleaning, also to prevent the contamination in hydraulic circuit and to remove the remains. It's being managed thoroughly by manufacturers. This study shows the effect of the temperature rise by the frictional heat generated when the piston hits the tool on the hydraulic oil while the hydraulic breaker is operating, also the temperature distribution when it starts to affect main components of hydraulic breaker. The stress and the amount of deformation also could be found through thermal-structural coupled field analysis. It proved that the stress and deformation are proportionally increased according to the temperature rise in hit area, and it affects the cylinder and the viscosity of hydraulic oil inside the cylinder when it heats up beyond the certain temperature.
Free radical-initiated copolymerizations of diethyl ${\alpha}$-phenylvinyl phospbate (DEPVP) with acrylonitrile (AN) and maleic anhydride (MAnh) were studied. The monomer reactivity ratios for AN/DEPVP pair, determined at $70^{\circ}C$ in bulk using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator, were;$ r_1(AN) = 0.77, r_2(DEPVP) = 0.002$. The values of the Alfrey-Price constants, Q and e, for DEPVP were calculated to be 0.012 and -1.35, respectively. Free radical-initiated copolymerization of MAnh/DEPVP pair in chloroform at $70^{\circ}C$ produced 1 : 1 alternating copolymers regardless monomer feed composition with the highest copolymerization rate at the molar ratio of MAnh : DEPVP = 7 : 3. The equilibrium constant of a charge-transfer complex between DEPVP and MAnh in deutrated chloroform, determinated at room temperature by transformed Benesi-Hildebrand NMR method, was 0.085 l/mol. The reduced viscosity of copolymers of AN/DEPVP pair decreased as the content of DEPVP units increased, while that of MAnh/DEPVP pair remained more or less constant.
