The modeling of 3D finite elements based on CAD data has been used to detect sites of corrosion defects in buried pipes. The results generated sophisticated profiles of electrolytic potential and vectors of current distributions on the earth surface. To identify the location of defects in buried pipes, the current distribution on the earth surface was projected to a plane of incidence that was identical to the pipe locations. The locations of minimum electrolytic potential value were found. The results show adequate match between the locations of real and expected defects based on modeling. In addition, the defect size can be calculated by integrating the current density curve. The results show that the defect sizes were $0.74m^2$ and $0.69m^2$, respectively. This technology may represent a breakthrough in the detection of indirect damage in various cases involving multiple defects in size and shape, complex/cross pipe systems, multiple anodes and stray current.

The issue of reflow profiling continues to be a complex topic. The pains often associated with profiling can be reduced greatly if certain guidelines are followed and if there is a strong understanding of the variables that can be encountered during the reflow process. This paper shall discuss the appropriate guidelines and trouble shooting methods for reflow profiling, and in particular shall focus upon the benefits of implementing the linear ramp-to-spike profile. Delta T(T) is defined as the variation of temperature found on an assembly during the reflow process. Too large of a T can result in soldering defects, so to combat T a Ramp-Soak-Spike(RSS) reflow profile often is utilized. However, when using a newer-style reflow oven, the T often is minimized or eliminated, thus, the soak zone of the reflow profile becomes an unnecessary step. Because of this, the implementation of a linear Ramp-To-Spike(RTS) reflow profile should be considered. Benefits such as reduced energy costs, reduced solder defects, increased efficiency, improved wetting, and a simplification of the reflow profile process may be experienced when using the RTS profile. Included in this paper are the suggested process parameters for setting up the RSS and RTS profiles and the chemical and metallurgical reactions that occur at each set point of these profiles. The paper concludes with a discussion and pictures of several profile-related defects. Each of these defects is described, analyzed, and instructions are given for troublshooting these defects.
Skull base tumors have been determined inoperable because it is difficult to accurately diagnose the extent of the involvement and to approach and excise the tumor safely. However, recently, the advent of sophisticated diagnostic tools such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging as well as the craniofacial and neurosurgical advanced techniques enabled an accurate determination of operative plans and safe approach for tumor excision. Resection of these tumors may sometimes result in massive and complex extirpation defects that are not amenable to local tissue closure. The purpose of this study is to analyze experiences of skull base reconstruction and to evaluate long term survival rate and complications. All cranial base reconstructions performed from July 1993 to September 2000 at Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Seoul National University Hospital were observed. The medical records were reviewed and analysed to assess the location of defects, reconstruction method, existence of the dural repair, history of preoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy, complications and causes of death of the expired patients. There were 12 cases in region II, 8 cases in region I and 1 case in region III according to the Irish classification of skull base. Cranioplasty was performed in 4 patients with a bone graft and microvascular free tissue transfer was selected in 17 patients to reconstruct the cranial base and/or mid-facial defects. Among them, 11 cases were reconstructed with a rectus abdominis musculocutaneous free flap, 2 with a latissimus dorsi muscluocutaneous free flap, 1 with a fibular osteocutaneous free flap, 2 with a scapular osteocutaneous free flap, and 1 with a forearm fasciocutaneous free flap, respectively. During over 3 years follow-up, 5 patients were expired and 8 lesions were relapsed. Infection(3 cases) and partial flap loss(2 cases) were the main complications and multiorgan failure(3 cases) by cancer metastasis and sepsis(2 cases) were causes of death. Statistically 4-years survival rate was 68%. A large complex defects were successfully reconstructed by one-stage operation and, the functional results were also satisfactory with acceptable survival rates.

As the quality of life improves, people want to live in more pleasant environment with beautiful trees, clean air and water. They are keenly interested in environmental issues as well as living environment of apartment which is a trademark of modern life. With this situation, the function and roles of landscaping trees have been recognized as a critical factor to improve living environment. As people have asked for more demands on those trees, it has raised more issues on the defect of trees and is required the solution to those issues. So, the purpose of this study was to survey the reasons of defects and find out those solutions. The data on defects in 1990s was referenced to the reports issued by SH Corporation in 1994 and 1997. The data on defects in 2000s are collected from March, 2006 to May 2006 based on the survey for apartments already constructed by Korea Housing Corporation. The results of the survey were shown that, in the year of 1994, landscaping trees causing high rate of defects were Acer buergerianum (92%), Pinus densiflora(85.7%), Celtis sinensis(80%), Cydonia sinensis(75%) and Diospyros kaki(66.6%), and in the year of 1997, landscaping trees causing high rate of defect were Ziziphus jujuba(100%), Cornus alba(65.2%), Diospyros kaki(60%), Thuja occidentalis(60%), and Metasequoia glyptostroboides(42%). And, in the year of 2006, landscaping trees causing high rate of defect were Sophora japonica(100%), Taxus cuspidata(80%), Magnoila quinquepeta (75%), Acer palmatum(62.5%) and Ginkgo biloba(50%). Because the reasons of defects were various according to the conditions including the climate, location, time and landscaping trees carried into the work area, we present the problems and solutions to those defects. Since the landscaping trees are living creatures, the factors of defects were various and complicated according to the site condition. So, in the period of warranty, contractor should designate the tree manger who can recognize the situation and take suitable action within timely manner.
The wear and defects on the wheel tread are caused by the interface between wheel and rail, the suspension system on bogie, the track condition and etc, which are interacted with complex mechanism. Because of the difficulty of analysis of wheel and rail interaction, the measuring data are necessary for improvement of wheel design and maintenance of train. On this case study, the pattern of wheel wears and defects are presented and lifetime of wheel and the reprofiling period are estimated on a basis of the measured results.

In this paper, we describes the development of automatic inspection system for detecting the defects on photovoltaic wafer by using machine vision. Until now, The defect inspection process was manually performed by operators. So these processes caused the produce of poorly-made articles and inaccuracy results. To improve the inspection accuracy, the inspection system is not only configured, but the image processing algorithm is also developed. The inspection system includes dimensional verification and pattern matching which compares a 2-D image of an object to a pattern image the method proves to be computationally efficient and accurate for real time application and we confirmed the applicability of the proposed method though the experience in a complex environment.
Herein, we report an exceptionally rare case of a 25-year-old woman with cloacal exstrophy/omphalocele-exstrophy-imperforate anus-spinal defects (OEIS) syndrome achieving a viable pregnancy despite many gastrointestinal and genitourinary malformations and multiple respective corrective operations. The patient was born with two vaginas, two uteruses, four ovaries, an imperforate anus, a large omphalocele including bowel and bladder exstrophy, and diaphysis of the pubic rami. This patient is the only documented OEIS patient not to have tethered spinal cord as an anomaly, perhaps contributing to her successful pregnancy. After experiencing preeclampsia with severe features at 35 weeks, the baby was born via cesarean section.
The horizontal filet welding is prevalently used in heavy and ship building industries to join the parts. The phenomena occurring in the horizonal fillet welding process are very complex and highly non-linear, so that its analysis is relatively difficult. Furthermore, various kinds of weld defect such as undercut, overlap, porosity. excess weld metal and incomplete penetration can be induced due to improper welding conditions. Among these defects, undercut, overlap and excess weld metal appear frequently in horizontal filet welding. To achieve a satisfactory weld bead geometry without weld defects, it is necessary to study the effect of welding conditions in the weld bead geometry. For analyzing the weld bead geometry with and without weld defects in horizontal fillet welding, a mathematical model was proposed in conjunction with a two-dimensional heat flow analysis adopted for computing the melting tone in . base metal. The reliability of the proposed model was evaluated through experiments. which showed that the proposed model was very effective for predicting the weld bead shape with or without weld defects in horizontal fillet welding.

One of the challenging tasks in visual inspection using CCD camera is to identify surface defects in an image with complex textured backgeound. In microscopic view, the surface of real objects shows regular or random textured patterns. In this paper, we present a visual inspection algorithm to extract abnormal surface defects in an image with textured background. The algorithm uses the space and frequency information at the same time by introducing the Dominant Frequency Map(DFM) which can describe the frequency characteristics of every small local region of an input image. We demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the method through a series of real experiments for a 14" TV CRT mold. The method successfully identifies a variety of infinitesimal defects, whose size is larger than $50\mu\textrm{m}$, of the mold. The experimental results show that the DFM based method is less sensitive to the environmental changes, such as illumination and defocusing, than conventional vision techniques.ques.
This study is to find out primary factors through the punch list in the large scale apartment housing complex, to prevent repeatedly occurring defects of construction and to gain quality management. The following are the findings of the research. (1) The positive strengthening of supervision for the workers can contribute to prevent defects of apartment construction and make better quality of the construction. (2) A solution should be made for the poor of surface join and the damage of work element showing a lot in the apart construction, which prevent defects and improve construction quality. (3) Indirect factors such as negligence and carelessness of the management should be improved to advance construction quality, and the caution and control strengthening of the management should be followed. It is revealed that hitch, omission, and heedlessness come from the defects, and the shortage of skill and checking appear as indirect factors. Therefore, to get quality improvement, the enhancement of the management factors, employment of excellent workers, and enhancement of working attitude and construction management are needed.
