Objectives: The purpose of this study was to introduce our three experiments on bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and its carriers performed using the critical sized segmental defect (CSD) model in rat fibula and to investigate development of animal models and carriers for more effective bone regeneration. Materials and Methods: For the experiments, 14, 16, and 24 rats with CSDs on both fibulae were used in Experiments 1, 2, and 3, respectively. BMP-2 with absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) (Experiments 1 and 2), autoclaved autogenous bone (AAB) and fibrin glue (FG) (Experiment 3), and xenogenic bone (Experiment 2) were used in the experimental groups. Radiographic and histomorphological evaluations were performed during the follow-up period of each experiment. Results: Significant new bone formation was commonly observed in all experimental groups using BMP-2 compared to control and xenograft (porcine bone) groups. Although there was some difference based on BMP carrier, regenerated bone volume was typically reduced by remodeling after initially forming excessive bone. Conclusion: BMP-2 demonstrates excellent ability for bone regeneration because of its osteoinductivity, but efficacy can be significantly different depending on its delivery system. ACS and FG showed relatively good bone regeneration capacity, satisfying the essential conditions of localization and release-control when used as BMP carriers. AAB could not provide release-control as a BMP carrier, but its space-maintenance role was remarkable. Carriers and scaffolds that can provide sufficient support to the BMP/carrier complex are necessary for large bone defects, and AAB is thought to be able to act as an effective scaffold. The CSD model of rat fibula is simple and useful for initial estimate of bone regeneration by agents including BMPs.
The level and activity of critical regulatory proteins in cells are tightly controlled by several tiers of post-translational modifications. HIF-1α is maintained at low levels under normoxia conditions by the collaboration between PHD proteins and the VHL-containing E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. We recently identified a new physiologically relevant mechanism that regulates HIF-1α stability in the nucleus in response to cellular oxygen levels. This mechanism is based on the collaboration between the SET7/9 methyltransferase and the LSD1 demethylase. SET7/9 adds a methyl group to HIF-1α, which triggers degradation of the protein by the ubiquitin-proteasome system, whereas LSD1 removes the methyl group, leading to stabilization of HIF-1α under hypoxia conditions. In cells from knock-in mice with a mutation preventing HIF-1α methylation (Hif1αKA/KA), HIF-1α levels were increased in both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Hif1αKA/KA knock-in mice displayed increased hematological parameters, such as red blood cell count and hemoglobin concentration. They also displayed pathological phenotypes; retinal and tumor-associated angiogenesis as well as tumor growth were increased in Hif1αKA/KA knock-in mice. Certain human cancer cells exhibit mutations that cause defects in HIF-1α methylation. In summary, this newly identified methylation-based regulation of HIF-1α stability constitutes another layer of regulation that is independent of previously identified mechanisms.
The composite lattice structures have advantages of high specific stiffness and strength and are mainly applied to the structures of launch vehicles that carry the compressive load. However, since these structures are manufactured by filament winding technology, there are some defects and voids found in the knots. For these reasons, the stiffness and strength of the lattice structures have to be compared with finite element model for predicting design load. But, the full scale test is difficult because time and space are limited and the shape of structure is complex, and hence the simple and reliable test methods for examination of stiffness are needed. In this paper, subelements of composite lattice structures were prepared and compressive and bending test were conducted for examination of stiffness of helical and hoop rib. Test methods for subelements of composite lattice structures that has curved and twisted shape were supposed and compared with finite element analysis results.

A novel approach to the manufacture of biocompatible ceramic scaffold for tissue engineering using micro-stereolithography system is introduced. Micro-stereolithography is a newly proposed technology that enables to make a 3D micro structure. The 3D micro structures made by this technology can have accurate and complex shape within a few micron error. Therefore, the application based on this technology can vary greatly in nano-bio fields. Recently, tissue-engineering techniques have been regarded as alternative candidate to treat patients with serious bone defects. So many techniques to design and fabricate 3D scaffolds have been developed. But the imperfection of scaffold such as random pore size and porosity causes a limitation in developing optimum scaffold. So scaffold development with controllable pore size and fully interconnected shape have been needed for a more progress in tissue engineering. In this paper, bone scaffold was developed by applying the micro-stereolithography to the mold technology. The scaffold material used was HA(Hydroxyapatite) nano powder. HA is a type of calcium phosphate ceramic with similar characteristic to human inorganic bone component. The bone scaffold made by HA is expected, in the near future, to be an efficient therapy for bone defect.

In this paper, we study a new estimation system for the prediction of steam generator tube defects. In the previous research works, defect size estimators were independently designed for each defect types in order to estimate the defect size. As a result, the structure of estimation system is rather complex and the estimation performance gets worse if the classification performance is degraded for some reason. This paper studies a new estimation system that does not require the classification of defect types. Although the previous works are expected to achieve much better estimation performance than the proposed system since it uses the estimator specialized in each defect, the performance difference is not so large. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed estimator can be effectively used for the case where the defect type classification is imperfect.
Upper limb nerve damage is a common condition, and evidence suggests that functional recovery may be limited following peripheral nerve repair in cases of delayed reconstruction or reconstruction of long nerve defects. A 26-year-old man presented with traumatic injury from a wide, blunt wound of the right forearm caused by broken glass, with soft tissue loss, complete transection of the radial and ulnar arteries, and a large median nerve gap. The patient underwent debridement and subsequent surgery with a microsurgical free radial fasciocutaneous flap to provide a direct blood supply to the hand; the cephalic vein within the flap was employed as a venous vascularized chamber to wrap the sural nerve graft and to repair the wide gap (14 cm) in the median nerve. During the postoperative period, the patient followed an intensive rehabilitation program and was monitored for functional performance over 5 years of follow-up. Our assessment demonstrated skin tropism and sufficient muscle power to act against strong resistance (M5) in the muscles previously affected by paralysis, as well as a good localization of stimuli in the median nerve region and an imperfect recovery of two-point discrimination (S3+). We propose a novel and efficient procedure to repair >10-cm peripheral nerve gap injuries related to upper limb trauma.

International Convention Center Jeju(ICCJ) was planed and built for accommodating a variety of conventional and exhibitional activities. For a better flexibility of operation, almost all rooms in ICCJ are designed to be subdivided Into a couple of small rooms with installation of movable partition walls. Architectural and acoustical design should be deliberatively and cooperatively undertaken to cope with such a complex condition. Conference hall, the largest room in ICCJ, has a capacity of 5000 seats who:1 used as a whole. It could be divided into 3 halls, one with 2000 pre-installed seats on slanted floor, up/down removable stage and its settings above, and the other 2 flat rooms with no seats installed. A devided hall with pre-installed seats and stage is designed for a multi-use auditorium. Almost all surfaces except ceilings adjacent to the stage are sound absorptively treated, in regard to extensive use of sound reinforcement systems. Its reverberation time 1.65 sec without audience, which is roughly correspond to 1.50 sec with fully occupied audience. When there is a need for a larger room, all the partition wail Is removed and the hall could be used as a whole. Exhibition hall is located in the first floor of ICCJ. Absorption and softness are needed for the hat 1 because exhibition behavior has something noisy features. Perforated MDF panels with porous materials and air space in the back groundare adopted for the walls. There are one large, two medium, and several small convention rooms in ICJJ. The room are also acoustically designed for maximum flexibility with no defects soundwisely.

Microvascular reconstruction, in the oral and maxillofacial regions, is a widely accepted as the best way to overcome the complex oral cavity defects. Many patients requiring composite reconstructions have been treated previously with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, selective and/or functional neck dissection or any of these combinations. In many cases of these patients, inadequate neck vessels for the microanastomosis of free flap are available, due to a lack of recipient vessels in the neck, poor vessel quality or vessel caliber mismatch. To achieve a tension-free anastomosis, vein grafting must be considered to span the vessel gap between the free flap pedicle and the recipient neck vessels. Although most microsurgeons believed that interpositional grafts are to be avoided due to vessel thrombosis and increased number of necessary microanastomosis, we, authors have some confidence of equivalency between reconstruction with and without interpositional saphenous vein graft. The great saphenous vein, also known as the long saphenous vein, is the large subcutaneous superficial vein of the leg and thigh. It joins with the femoral vein in the region of femoral triangle at the saphenofemoral junction, and coursed medially to lie on the anterior surface of the thigh before entering an opening in the fascia lata, called the saphenous opening. For a better understanding of the great saphenous vein graft for the interpositional vessel graft in the oral cavity reconstructions, and an avoidance of any uneventful complications during these procedures, the related surgical anatomies with their harvesting tips are summarized in this review article in the Korean language.

Nowadays, 3 dimentional (3D) printing, especially Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) system is used in dentistry. DMLS system has recently been introduced for fabrication metal framework for metal ceramic crowns to overcome the disadvantages of the casting method and computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milling system. DMLS system uses a high-temperature laser beam to selectively heat a substructure metal powder based on the CAD data with the framework design. A thin layer of the beamed area becomes fused, and the metal framework is completed by laminating these thin layers. Utilizing DMLS system to fabricate fixed prostheses is expected to achieve free-from shaping without mold and limitations from cutting tools, fabricate prostheses with complex geometry, prevent distortion and fabrication defects that inherent to conventional fabrication methods. The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate various fixed prostheses such as long span fixed prostheses, post to achieve satisfactory results in functional and esthetic aspects.
With the development of industry, the qualitical advancement of power is needed. Since it is placed in the end step of power system, the fault at the distribution system causes some users blackout directly. So if the fault occurs, quick restoration is very important subject and, for the reason, induction of the distribution automation system is now being progressed briskly. For the quick restoration of the faulted distribution system, the load shedding of the blackout-area must be followed, and the other problems like the shedded load, faulted voltage and the rest may cause other accident. Accordingly load shedding must be based on the precise calculation technique during the distribution system load flow(dist flow) calculation. In these days because of its superior convergence characteristic the Newton-Raphson method is most widely used. The number of buses in the distribution system amounts to thousands, and if the fault occurs at the distribution system, the speed for the dist flow calculation is to be improved to apply to the On-Line system. However, Newton-Raphson method takes much time relatively because it must calculate the Jacobian matrix and inverse matrix at every iteration, and in the case of huge load, the equation is hard to converge. In this thesis. matrix equation is used to make algebraical expression and then to solve load flow equation and to modify above defects. Then the complex matrix is divided into real part and imaginary part to keep sparcity. As a result time needed for calculation diminished. Application of mentioned algorithm to 302 bus, 700 bus, 1004 bus system led to almost identical result got by Newton-Raphson method and showed constant convergence characteristic. The effect of time reduction showed 88.2%, 86.4%, 85.1% at each case of 302 bus, 700 bus system 86.4%, and 1004 bus system.
