The data were analyzed by two-sample t-test, ANOVA and hierarchical regression with SPSS program. The score of health literacy was 48.62/66 and the communication competence was 59.60/75. More than half perceived that the average reading level of Korean adults was higher than the actual. subjective health status(β=.309, p<.001), health literacy(β=.284, p=.002) and subjective academic grade(β=.235, p=.009) had significant influence on communication competence in the nursing students(F=10.546, p<.001). The explanatory power increased 7.3% more by adding health literacy(F=10.339, p=.002). To enhance communication competence of nursing students, more systematic curriculums to improve health literacy are needed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of web-based learning for ventilator practice on the knowledge and clinical competence of nursing students. Method: The research design was a non-equivalent control group pre-post non-synchronized design. Twenty five nursing students were collected for the experimental group from August 23 to November 26, 2004 and nineteen nursing students for the control group from August 22 to November 25, 2005. All subjects experienced clinical practices in an intensive care unit of a hospital in G city for 2 weeks. The web-based learning for ventilator practice was conducted in the experimental group only. The data were analyzed with t-test and ANCOVA using SPSS 10.1 program. Result: The 2 week web-based clinical practice learning significantly improved the knowledge scores for the experimental group, however, there was no significant differences in the score for the clinical competence between experimental and control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that a self-directed web-based learning for ventilator practice of nursing students can facilitate the knowledge of care for a ventilated patient. Therefore, faculties should develop a variety of web-based multimedia content programs for clinical instruction based on clinical situation.

The research design was a descriptive survey study, and 219 people were selected through convenience sampling among the visiting nurses who worked in the 28 community based health care centers. The most frequent decision making style of visiting nurses was a rational style. The scores of self leadership and communication competence of visiting nurses were also showed the highest score when the visiting nurse had a rational decision making style. The statistical significant correlations were found among the decision making style, self leadership and communication competence. The results of this study were useful to develop jop-training programs for visiting nurses to enhance their problem-solving abilities. We suggest more various education programs to increase the visiting nurse's self leadership and communication competence will be implemented and refined protocols according to situations will be developed, too.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of preclinical clinical performance examination (CPX) on nursing students' confidence in their nursing skills and critical thinking competence. Methods: The design of this research was one-group pretest-posttest, and the participants were 112 nursing students. The preclinical CPX consisted of a clinical examination, patient-nurse relationship, oral test of related knowledge, written test of the nursing process, and debriefing using comprehensive scenarios based on real patient cases. The confidence of nursing skills consisted of an 8-item NRS and the critical thinking competence consisted of a 12-item 4-point scale developed by researchers and measured in both the pretest and posttest. The collected data were analyzed using paired t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: The score for confidence in nursing skills (t=10.60, p<.001) and that for critical thinking competence (t=7.03, p<.001) increased significantly after preclinical CPX. Conclusion: This study showed that preclinical CPX was effective in improving nursing students' confidence in their nursing skills and critical thinking competence. Therefore, preclinical CPX is expected to be utilized in nursing practice education. Additional studies including those on control groups are recommended to compare differences between the preclinical CPX group and control group.
