  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate compassion competence and its mediating effects on the relationship between attitudes toward dementia and care behavior among caregivers of older adults with dementia in nursing homes. Methods: 211 participants were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Data were collected from February 1st to May 24th, 2023, through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis and the bootstrapping method. Results: The mean score for care behavior was 3.67±0.97 (range 1~5). Caring behaviors were significantly associated with attitudes toward dementia (r=.76, p<.001) and compassion competence (r=.75, p<.001). Using Baron and Kenny's approach and PROCESS Macro model 4, care behavior was directly affected by dementia attitude (β=.76, p<.001). Compassion competence (β=.66, p<.001) was directly affected by dementia attitude. The partial mediating effects of compassion competence (β=.47, p<.001, 95% confidence interval 0.10~0.23) on the impact of dementia attitude on care behavior was confirmed. Conclusion: The results suggest that compassion competence should be considered when developing nursing interventions to enhance dementia-related attitudes and improve care behavior among caregivers of older adults with dementia.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show that Web-Based English Instruction (WBEI) focused on writing is effective in learning English in Korea. To investigate the effectiveness of WBEI, a survey was conducted to the experimental group after WBEI and a test was taken to compare the difference of the score of the experimental group and control group. According to the survey, almost all students thought that WBEI was a most effective way to improve communicative competence by exchanging electronic mails with native speakers. The test showed that the experimental group's score was somewhat low in comparison with the control group's in pre-test, but the former groups' was rather higher than the control groups' in post-test. This study also suggests that we should develop more effective Web-based English teaching-learning methods to activate WBEI in our classroom.

The instrument for the study was a questionnaire that is consisted of the general characteristics, an Interaction Anxiousness Scale (IAS) and a Global Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale (GICC). Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS version 21.0. Results: The mean score of the IAS was $41.89{\pm}8.74$ and the GICC was $3.51{\pm}0.34$. Communication competence significantly differed by the satisfaction of major (F=10.86, p<.001). In addition, the satisfaction of interpersonal relationships was significantly different in both communication competence (F=17.52, p<.001) and social anxiety (F=23.85, p<.001). Social anxiety had a negative correlation with communication competence (r=-.48, p<.001). Social anxiety accounted for 55.3% of the variance -social relaxation (${\beta}$=-.62), assertiveness (${\beta}$=-.18), interaction management (${\beta}$=.14) and efficiency (${\beta}$=-.13)- of communication competence's subcategories. Conclusion: It was found that communication competence has an influence on social anxiety. Therefore, education programs are needed to promote communication competence for a decline of social anxiety in nursing students.

Methods: The subjects of this study were 238 nurses at 13 general hospitals who have had less than 12 months of nursing experience. The data were collected by structured questionnaire from August 5 to August 31 of 2009 and analyzed by the SPSS Win 12.0 program. Results: The total mean score for clinical competence was $181.05{\pm}15.17$, critical thinking disposition was $94.65{\pm}8.12$, and practice environment was $41.00{\pm}5.55$. There were significant differences of clinical competence according to the GPA (t=-3.58, p<.001), the number of beds in the hospital (t=-3.22, p=.001), instruction by preceptor (t=-2.32, p=.021), and previous experience of clinical practice in the hospital (t=-2.21, p=.028). Additionally, critical thinking disposition and practice environment were positively correlated to clinical competence (r=.50, p<.001; r=.20, p=.002). In multivariate approach, predictors included in this study explained 43% of variance in clinical competence. Significant predictors of clinical competence were critical thinking disposition ($\beta=.50$, p<.001), practice environment ($\beta=.14$, p=.012), and working duration ($\beta=.13$, p=.018). Conclusions: Based on these findings, it is needed that providing supportive practice environment and developing curriculum for enhancing the critical thinking disposition to improve the clinical competence in new graduate nurses.

Descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$ test, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple stepwise regression with the SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results: Among the items related to elementary school students' awareness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, artificial respiration was perceived at the highest rate (91.9%) and was followed by cardiopulmonary resuscitation, chest compression and airway management. The mean score for attitude 3.51, perceived competence 3.47. There was a positive correlation between awareness, attitude and perceived competence. Attitude and awareness were significant predictors and explained 57.5% of perceived competence about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Conclusion: The results indicate the necessity of developing effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation education programs for elementary school students.

  • Purpose: In this study, behavioral styles of Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness (DISC) were examined and differences in job satisfaction and clinical competence among newly hired nurses were explored. Methods: For this explanatory correlational research, 176 newly hired clinical nurses were recruited from three university hospitals and one general hospital located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Data were collected in August, 2013 though self-report questionnaires. Results: The distribution of behavioral styles was 11.4%, 42%, 29% and 17.6% for Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness respectively. DISC behavioral styles were associated with sub-areas of job satisfaction such as professional position and doctor-nurse relationship. DISC behavioral styles were significantly associated with the total score for clinical competence and sub-areas of data collection, basic nursing skills, critical thinking, education and leadership, and attitudes toward professional development and practical skills. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that DISC behavioral styles predicted clinical competence (Adj. $R^2$=.14, F=9.42, p<.001). Conclusion: A focus on cultivating influential and steady behavioral styles among newly hired nurses can be helpful in improving job satisfaction and clinical competence. There is a need to improve interpersonal relationships through a deeper understanding of each person's behavioral style based on the analysis of DISC behavioral styles.
