  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of nursing student's preceptorship and to compare the perception on the readiness of clinical competence between nurse preceptors and senior-level nursing students. Method: Data was collected with self-administered questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test. Study participants were 65 preceptors in one university hospital and 59 nursing students in the same university. Result: The knowledge and satisfaction about preceptorship in the nurse preceptor was 2.66 and 2.70 out of 5. Most of the preceptors (70%) agreed to the students preceptorship program even though the intention to be a preceptor was very low (14.1%). They responded that the merits of student preceptorship were self-development (29.7%) and knowledge acquisition (29.7%), whereas the disadvantages were increased workload (67.2%) and increased stress (23.4%). Requested rewards were monetary reward (44.4%) and promotion (33.3%). In all areas of clinical competence readiness, students' perception score was higher than preceptors'. Conclusion: Nursing education must reexamine current approaches to clinical teaching and seek methods to better prepare future nurses. These findings may serve as a guide to create an ideal students preceptorship program to place a greater emphasis on the competencies desired for providing high quality nursing services.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a newly developed Introduction to Clinical Nursing (ICN) program on critical thinking skills, communication competence, self-efficacy, and clinical performance self-confidence in nursing students in their third year. Methods: One group pre-test and post-test design was used with three data collection time points (pre-test, post-test1 and post-test2). Participants were 74 third year nursing students approaching their first clinical practicum. The new program included (a) simulated clinical encounters regarding situations of assessing hospitalized patents and caring for patients with oxygenation needs, (b) objective structured clinical examination of skills, (c) lectures, and (e) field trips. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests. Results: After the ICN course, critical thinking skills(significant only between pretest and post-test2), communication competence, and clinical performance self-confidence improved significantly (p<.05). There was no improvement in the self-efficacy total score but there was significant improvement in the subscale, self-regulatory efficacy. Conclusions: The study results indicate that the ICN course may be effective in increasing critical thinking skills, communication competence, and clinical performance self-confidence in nursing students. However, the effect size was very small and modifications of this program should be considered to develop more cost-effective educational programs.

  • The authors investigated the effect of feedback and remediation after formative assessment (FRFA) by comparing the FRFA score and that of summative assessment (SA) in a course on clinical skills. In March 2015, 33 subjects underwent evaluation of their ability to perform a complex clinical skill using a real-time ready-made mobile assessment form tool, and through e-mail they were supplied with their feedback and final score (the pass group earned 2 points; the intermediate group earned 1 point; the nonpass group earned 0 points) followed by their self-reflection. The nonpass group underwent a re-test and e-mail feedback again until they passed the test, given the ease of performance. In December 2015, the 33 subjects took a 10-item SA, and one of the 10 items addressed a similar clinical skill. The difference between the first score on the FRFA and the score on the SA was evaluated statistically (p=0.05) through data analysis, variance distribution, correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis using SPSS software ver. 16. The increase from the score on the SA to that on the FRFA was statistically significant ($4.5{\pm}9.29$) in the pass group and the intermediate group, and was $29.7{\pm}11.49$ in the nonpass group of the formative evaluation (p<0.001). Using an FRFA could decrease the range in the standard deviation of the score and increase the minimum score among the subjects.

  • As for medical education, not only acquirement of knowledge but also practical clinical competence is important because it is needed on primary medicine. Under this trend, Clinical Performance Examination(CPX) is already being practiced in medical college. But in spite of its importance, CPX is not yet practiced in Korean medical college. So, by contemplating necessity and outcome of CPX, We try to offer basic data for future imposition and improvement of CPX in Korean medical education. 49 students of grade 3 in a Daejeon Korean Medical College were targets of investigation. After educated about CPX in advance, They treated simulated patient and answered questionnaire about CPX. Then, their treatment was scored by Professor and simulated patients. Total 49 members responded to the survey and the results of the analysis were as follows. The answer that CPX is useful(Mean=4.12) and essential for acquiring professionalism of treatment(Mean=4.02) was got high scores. But many respondents replied about necessity of better CPX environment and felt difficulty about PPI(45%). Meanwhile, Professor group(Mean=9.24) tended to give more high score than Simulated patient group(Mean=7.94). This study can be very useful for composing basic data of CPX in Korean medical College and improving practical clinical competence of students. But this study has also some limits like area, respondent selection, group module etc. So, more detailed and comprehensive survey is needed. This work was supported by the Daejeon University Research Grant.

  • The purpose of this study was to contribute to the relatively neglected area of out -patient satisfaction with physical therapy service by measuring and determining the factors affecting patient satisfaction in the Andong region. One hundred and forty-five subjects (81 males and 64 females) at 11 facilities with a mean age of 39.2 years (SD=16.2) responded to the satisfaction questionnaire. Each questionnaire contained a set of demographic questions and 19 patient satisfaction items. Cronbach's alpha test of reliability was used as the measure of internal consistency . The satisfaction scale had a good reliability coefficient : Cronbach's alpha=.8688. The average satisfaction score (minimum score=19, maximum score=95) was 75.4 ranging from 38 to 90. Respondent variables including sex, education, marital status, religion, medical security, average monthly income, and number of physical therapy out-patient department treatment visits were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and ANCOVA. Satisfaction with the service was largely unrelated to mallets of sex, education, occupation, or other demographic variables. However, marital status, age, average monthly income, and number of treatment visits in the out-patient department were significantly related to patient satisfaction. The analysis presented here could be replicatied with a larger sample in other areas. Other factors such as physical therapist availability, physical therapist competence, accessibility, waiting time, and atmosphere of the treatment area should be considered in further studies.
