  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Korean Version of the Spiritual Care Competence Scale (K-SCCS). Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. The K-SCCS consisted of 26 questions to measure spiritual care competence of nurses. Participants, 228 nurses who had more than 3 years'experience as a nurse, completed the survey. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the construct validity and correlations of K-SCCS and spiritual well-being (SWB) were used to examine the criterion validity of K-SCCS. Cronbach's alpha was used to test internal consistency. Results: The construct and the criterion-related validity of K-SCCS were supported as measures of spiritual care competence. Cronbach's alpha was .95. Factor loadings of the 26 questions ranged from .60 to .96. Construct validity of K-SCCS was verified by confirmatory factor analysis (RMSEA=.08, CFI=.90, NFI=.85). Criterion validity compared to the SWB showed significant correlation (r=.44, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings suggest that K-SCCS serves as an appropriate measure of spiritual care competence with validity and reliability. However, further study is needed to retest the verification of the factor analysis related to factor 2 (professionalisation and improving the quality of spiritual care) and factor 3 (personal support and patient counseling). Therefore, we recommend using the total score without distinguishing subscales.

The data survey was conducted on 201 students of Chungcheong Province who experienced clinical practice. Data were analyzed by anova and logistic regression analysis. As a result of the study, clinical practice satisfaction was positively correlated with self-efficacy (r=.337), communication competence (r=.293) and self-efficacy was positively correlated with communication competence (r=.633). Factors affected to clinical practice satisfaction were self-efficacy, academic score, and major satisfaction. Therefore, it will be necessary to develop clinical practice education programs that can enhance students' self-efficacy and improve their communication competence.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the level of transcultural self-efficacy (TSE) and related factors and educational needs for cultural competence in nursing (CCN) of Korean hospital nurses. Methods: A self-assessment instrument was used to measure TSE and educational needs for CCN. Questionnaires were completed by 285 nurses working in four Korean hospitals. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results: Mean TSE score for all items was 4.54 and score for mean CCN educational needs, 5.77. Nurses with master's degrees or higher had significantly higher levels of TSE than nurses with bachelor's degrees. TSE positively correlated with English language proficiency, degrees of interest in multi-culture, degree of experience in caring for multi-cultural clients, and educational needs for CCN. The regression model explained 28% of TSE. Factors affecting TSE were degree of interest in multi-culture, degree of experience in caring for multi-cultural clients, and educational needs for CCN. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate a need for nurse educators to support nurses to strengthen TSE and provide educational program for TSE to provide nurses with strategies for raising interests in cultural diversity and successful experiences of cultural congruent care.

The cultural competence was 3.49±0.55 points, and the educational needs for cultural nursing competence was 8.25±0.10 points. The cultural competence showed significant differences according to academic score(F=7.465, p=.001), multicultural friend(t=-2.477, p=.016), foreign language communication ability(t=-3.113, p=.002), and suburban multicultural education (t=-2.030, p=.045), and there was no difference in educational needs for cultural nursing competence according to cultural contact experience. It is necessary to provide an educational program that enhances foreign language communication and strengthens qualitative contact experience with multicultural subjects in order to increase the cultural competency of nursing students.

  • Purpose: The self-assessment ability of students is important in acquiring clinical skills. The study explored the self-assessment behavior of nursing students after OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). Methods: The participants were 90 nursing students. They assessed their performance just after an OSCE (assessment 1). They were given OSCE checklists and re-assessed their performance level (assessment 2). Assessments 1, 2, and an assessment by professor were compared and analyzed. Results: Students assessed themselves higher than professor. But, when students were divided into three groups according to score level, different behaviors were evident between the groups. The high-score group assessed themselves lower than the professor, while the mid-and low-score groups assessed themselves higher than the professor. Students' self-assessment more closely approximated the professor's assessment when they were given checklists. The correlation between assessments 1 and 2 was stronger in high-score group and weak in low-score group. Conclusion: The study results indicate that students tend to assess their skills higher than the professor, but their scores were more in line with the professor when they were provided with checklists, and students' self-assessment behavior differed in the different score groups, suggesting a need for customized feedback and a concern for students with low scores.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of simulation-based education on the clinical reasoning competence, clinical competence, and satisfaction with simulation experience (SSE). The research design was one group pretest-posttest. Study participants were 89 third-year nursing students from C University in G city, who were engaged the simulation-based education for eight weeks from August to October 2019. Learning scenario titles were blood transfusion reaction patient care with postoperative total hip replacement, hypoglycemia patient care with diabetes mellitus, and hyperkalemia patient care with liver cirrhosis. The data were analyzed by paired t-test using SPSS Win 23.0 program. After applying simulation-based education, nursing students' clinical reasoning competence (t=-17.082, p<.001) and clinical competence(t=-18.40, p<.001) improved significantly. SSE score was 4.65 out of 5 points. The results indicate that the simulation-based education in this study gave the students the experience of providing qualified and secure nursing care under conditions similar to those in the real clinical field. To improve the clinical reasoning competence and clinical competence of nursing students, various cases scenarios are developed and simulation-based education should be applied to more subjects in the nursing curriculum.

The mean score for professional self-concept was $2.65{\pm}0.29$ points in the range of 1 point to 4 points. And interpersonal relations was an average of $3.55{\pm}0.35$ points in the range of 1 point to 5 points. Nursing competence was an average of $2.65{\pm}0.39$ points in the range of 1 point to 4 points. Professional self-concept and interpersonal relations were positively correlated with nursing competence. Nursing competence was differed from clinical career(F=10.518, p<.001), working unit(F=4.139, p=.018), educational background(F=6.542, p=.002), and satisfaction on nursing(F=6.326, p<.001). The regression model with clinical career, working unit, educational background, satisfaction on nursing, 3 sub domain of professional self-concept(professional practice, satisfaction, communication), and interpersonal relation was statistically significant (F=31.94, p<.001). And this model could explain 51.5% of nursing competency(Adj R2=.515). Especially, professional practice(${\beta}=.532$, p<.001) of professional self-concept, interpersonal relations(${\beta}=.223$, p<.001), clinical career(${\beta}=.169$, p<.001), working unit: ICU (${\beta}=.169$, p<.05) were identified the factors influencing on nursing competence. Therefore, improving clinical nurses' nursing competence can be achieved with broad approach that includes improvements in professional self-concept and interpersonal relations.
