  • The stress intensity factor has been calculated theoretically for the cracked plate subjected to remote normal stress and reinforced with a sheet by symmetric seam welding. The singular integral equation was derived based on displacement compatibility condition between the cracked sheet and the reinforcement plate, and solved by means of Erdogran and Gupta's method. The results from the derived equation for stress intensity factor were compared with FEM solutions and seems to be reasonable. The reinforcement effect gets better as welding line is closer to the crack and the stiffness ratio of the cracked plate and the reinforcement sheet becomes larger.

  • The mode I and II stress intensity factors have been calculated theoretically for the cracked plate reinforced with a plate by symmetric spot welding under remote mixed mode loading. This is the extension of authors' previous work for the reinforced cracked plate under remote normal stress. Regardless of loading types, the reinforcement effect gets better as one joining spot is closer to the crack tip and the others are closer to the crack surface, and optimum number of the joining spots can be existed. For the present model, the remote loading parallel to crack surface produces the mode I stress intensity factor.

  • Two different modelling approaches to dune dynamics have been established thus far; continuous models that emphasize the precise representation of wind field, and feedback-based models that focus on the interactions between dunes, rather than aerodynamics. Though feedback-based models have proven their capability to capture the essence of dune dynamics, the compatibility issues on these models have less been addressed. This research investigated, mostly from the theoretical point of view, the algorithmic compatibility of three feedback-based dune models: sand slab models, Nishimori model, and de Castro model. Major findings are as follows. First, sand slab models and de Castro model are both compatible in terms of flux perspectives, whereas Nishimori model needs a tuning factor. Second, the algorithm of avalanching can be easily implemented via repetitive spatial smoothing, showing high compatibility between models. Finally, the wind shadow rule might not be a necessary component to reproduce dune patterns unlike the interpretation or assumption of previous studies. The wind shadow rule, rather, might be more important in understanding bedform-level interactions. Overall, three models show high compatibility between them, or seem to require relatively small modification, though more thorough investigation is needed.

  • The water resistance is important factor for sunscreen formulations. Generally a sunscreen cream was formulated by a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. In the W/O emulsion system, silicone oils are added to improve the texture of formulations. Silicone oils have low compatibility with organic sunscreen agent, causing problems with the stability in emulsion. In this study, the compatibility between various oils in the W/O emulsion was derived numerically using Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) at first. HSP is represented a dispersion degree, a polarity, and a hydrgen bond in a composition. In this study, various emulsions were prepared according to the types of oils with different HSP values and then monitored by a viscosity and morphology according to the time and temperature. The HSP values of components and the experimental results have similar activities for the stability of emulsions. HSP made it easy to select oil with high compatibility. When the compatibility of the oil phase in the W/O emulsion was high, the viscosity change over time was small. The stability was improved under the freeze-thaw cycle (-15 ℃ ~ 45 ℃). In the future, if the composition of the ingredients is optimized through HSP, it is expected that it will be helpful in the development of W/O type sunscreen formulations that are excellent in use and stability.

  • In the strut-tie model design of structural concrete, the importance of the effective strength of concrete strut has been overlooked by many practitioners. The authors believe that the effective strength of concrete strut is an important factor not only in determining steel tie forces but also in verifying the nodal zone strength and geometric compatibility condition of a selected strut-tie model. This study evaluate the effect of the effective strength of concrete strut on structural concrete design by applying the different effective strut strengths to the strut-tie model design of a post-tensioned anchorage zone and a continuous concrete deep beam.

  • In staically indeterminate structures torsional stiffness is an important factor for prediction of mechanical behavior at all loading stages in reinfored concrete beams, which also for calculation of torsional moment. This paper proposes equation for postcracking torsional stiffness of reinforced concrete beams under pure torsion, which is derived considering the equilibrium and compatibility condition for shear panel based on the variable angle space truss model. The equation describes well the effect according to the variation of aspect ratio and steel volume ratio per unit concrete volume. It agress with experimental results in this paper as well as available literature.

  • This study investigated the purchase intention of green fashion products based on Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation theory and compared the differences between Korean and British consumers. In order to identify the impact of personal characteristics, this study also examined the effects of fashion innovativeness and LOHAS tendency on perceived attributes of innovation and intention to purchase. With a convenience sampling method, a survey questionnaire was distributed at popular fashion streets in each country. A total of 426 data were obtained, 203 from the UK and 223 from Korea. About 52% were females, and 69% were in their twenties. A factor analysis generated two LOHAS factors (health concerns and eco concerns) and four attributes of green fashion products (image improvement, symbolic superiority, observability, and compatibility). Two types of green fashion products (organic cotton t-shirts and organic cotton t-shirts with an environmental message) were provided to measure the purchase intention, respectively. The findings were as follows. British consumers were more likely to show LOHAS tendency and to perceive positive advantages of green products compared to Koreans; in addition, British consumers presented higher mean scores on the purchase intentions of organic cotton products. Fashion innovativeness was significant to predict image improvement and symbolic superiority, while eco concerns were significant in compatibility for both nations. Compatibility was important for both countries in order to explain the intention to adopt two types of organic products. In addition, image improvement was another predictor for purchase intention of organic t-shirts with an environmental message. Managerial implications were provided.
