  • Background: Studies investigating the association of 2R/3R polymorphism in the thymidylate synthase 5'-untranslated enhanced region (TSER) and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk have reported conflicting results. Thus, a meta-analysis was performed to summarize the data on the potential association. Methods: Pubmed, Embase and CBM databases were searched for all available studies. Links between the TSER 2R/3R polymorphism and CRC risk were estimated by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Seven case-control studies with a total of 2723 cases and 4030 controls were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that the 3R variant of TSER 2R/3R polymorphism contributes to CRC risk in two comparison models (OR 3R vs. 2R =1.10, 95%CI 1.02-1.18, P = 0.015; OR Homozygote comparison model = 1.22 1.04-1.43, 95%CI 1.04-1.43, P = 0.012). Subgroup analyses by ethnicity further demonstrated a contribution in Caucasians with three comparison models (OR 3R vs. 2R = 1.10, 95%CI 1.02-1.19, P = 0.015; OR Homozygote comparison model = 1.21, 95%CI 1.03-1.41, P = 0.019; OR Recessive comparison model = 1.18, 95%CI 1.05-1.33, P = 0.008). However, the association in the Asian population was still uncertain due to the limited data (all P values were more than 0.05). Conclusions: Our meta-analysis suggests that the 3R variant of Thymidylate synthase 5'-untranslated enhanced region 2R/3R polymorphism contributes to gastric cancer risk in the Caucasian population, while any association in Asian populations needs further study.

  • In this paper, two approaches for designing tracking controllers for a variable reluctance motor (VRM), namely the Lyapunov-based fuzzy approach and the classical approach, are compared. The nonlinear model of a VRM is first addressed. The two control schemes are introduced afterwards, and then applied to obtain tracking controllers. Simulation results of a sample case, to which the methods are applied, are also presented. Comparison of the methods based on the results obtained concludes the paper.

  • Some well known order reduction methods are briefly described and a nev order reduction technique is introduced. A comparison of the various classes of order reduction approaches are indicated. Furthermore, the question is raised how order reduction should be executed with respect to controller design. Finally, by means of an example, results of the discussed approaches are compared.

  • This paper presents the design results and characteristics analysis of SRM for vehicle power supply. For Adaptable design of the SRM, Variable design parameters, such as stator and rotor laminations, winding details, pole numbers, and pole arcs, phases numbers are required. So, in this paper the SRM design results and the comparison of characteristics for vehicle power supply as phases changed are described.

  • The purpose of this paper is to compare a class of vector quantization techniques which include GVQ(Genera VQ) MSVQ(Mean separated VQ) and DCT_VQ The VQ techniques are applied to six images and both subjective and objective performance comparison are made The results indicate that the transform domain approach(DCT_VQ) yields more syable results than the spatial domain method (GVQ, MSVQ)

  • A rational method is presented for estimating the power increase of a ship at sea. A probabilistic approach is applied to determine the weather condition at sea, A comparison is made between some full-scale data and the result of Swift's method. A comparison is also made to find differences among the results of eight kind methods for the wind added resistance of a VLCC in head wind. The mean difference between the results is 7%, in general, for a given relative wind speed.

  • This paper introduces experimental results of ride values assessed for domestic and overseas passenger cars. The experiment was executed about four vehicles, three Korean persons, and two roads by measuring human 12-axis. The results include the comparison of the component ride values, overall ride value, and seat effective amplitude transmissibility. The relative comparison of the ride values for different cars is shown in this paper, which may lead us to judge the current address of Korean ride quality-related technology.

  • Three approximation methods for generating outcomes on Poisson random variables are discussed. A comparison is made to determine which method requires the least computer execution time and to determine which is the most robust approximation. Results of the comparison study suggest the method to choose for the generating procedure depends on the mean value of Poisson random variable which is being generated.

  • We first extend the notions of weighted curvatures, including the weighted flag curvature and the weighted Ricci curvature, for a Finsler manifold with given volume form. Then we establish some basic comparison theorems for Finsler manifolds with various weighted curvature bounds. As applications, we obtain some McKean type theorems for the first eigenvalue of Finsler manifolds, some results on weighted curvature and fundamental group for Finsler manifolds, as well as an estimation of Gromov simplicial norms for reversible Finsler manifolds.

  • 1. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Suhwagije-tang(SGT) distillate on the immune activity of spleen cells of aged SD rats. 2. Methods: We used 10, 50, 72 weeks old SD rats in this study. Spleen cells from SD rats were stimulated with ConA and treated with 1% Vitamin C(Vit.C) or Suhwagijetang distillate(SGT). After 24 hours, the concentrations of IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, IFN-${\gamma}$ in the cell culture supernatant were measured by ELISA. 3. Results and Conclusions 1) At all concentration of SGT distillate, survival rates of liver cells were higher than the control group. In addition, 50% SGT distillate group's cell survival rates were significantly higher than other groups. 2) In 10 weeks SD rats(SGT group), the concentration of IL-2 significantly decreased in comparison with ConA group, Vit.C group. In 52 weeks SD rats(SGT group), the concentration of IL-2 significantly decreased in comparison with ConA group. 3) In 10, 52 weeks SD rats(SGT group), the concentration of IL-4 significantly decreased in comparison with ConA group. 4) In 10 weeks SD rats(SGT group), the concentration of IL-10 significantly decreased in comparison with ConA group. And in 72 weeks SD rats(SGT group), the concentration of IL-10 significantly increased in comparison with Vit.C group. 5) In 52, 72 weeks SD rats(SGT group), the concentration of IFN-${\gamma}$ significantly decreased in comparison with 10 weeks SD rats(SGT group). These results suggest that Suhwagije-tang(SGT) distillate has the effect of increasing the immune activity of spleen cells of aged SD rats.
