The soil physical quality is a core factor in achieving two of sustainable agriculture's goals: productivity and environment. The purpose of this study was to assess changes in soil physical properties for nearly a decade through periodic monitoring of three cultivation types: upland, orchard, and paddy. Field surveys and lab analysis were conducted to determine the soils physical properties after every 4 years; upland (2009, 2013, and 2017), orchard (2010 and 2014), and paddy (2011 and 2015). In each year soil samples from 162-338 sites were collected. The bulk density of upland subsoil decreased from $1.53Mg\;m^{-3}$ to $1.50Mg\;m^{-3}$ while the plowing depth and subsoil organic matter increased from 13.7 cm to 19.5 cm and from $12.6g\;kg^{-1}$ to $18.3g\;kg^{-1}$ respectively during the period 2009-2017. Plowing depth for orchard increased from 16.7 cm to 18.9 cm. However, organic matter content decreased from $15.9g\;kg^{-1}$ to $15.4g\;kg^{-1}$ during the 2010-2014 period. For paddy, plowing depth and subsoil organic matter decreased from 17.5 cm to 16.7 cm and from $17.5g\;kg^{-1}$ to $15.8g\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. The subsoil bulk density increased from $1.47Mg\;m^{-3}$ to $1.52Mg\;m^{-3}$ from 2011-2015. Excess ratio for soil physical standards increased from 16% to 22% in orchard, 56% to 62% in paddy, and decreased from 41% to 29% in upland. The overall soil physical quality had been ameliorated for upland, but degraded for paddy. Improved tillage practices and application of appropriate organic matter is necessary to enhance the quality of soils, especially in the paddy field.
This study was conducted to understand the influence of soil compaction on root growth and nutrient uptake characteristics of the soybean roots grown in two soils with different texture. Tap root elongation was measured on young seedling grown in cores compacted to different bulk densities of 1.2, 1.4 and $1.6/cm^3$ with different soil water retention in laboratory. The soil used were Samgag sandy loam and Baegsan loam soils. The wet and dry weight, total length, average radius and total surface area of roots were measured on soybean plants grown in 1/5000 a Wagner pots compacted to different bulk density of 1.2 and $1.4g/cm^3$. The nutrient uptake of soybean shoot was measured and evaluated with the unit surface area of roots at the 7th, 17th and 27th days after germination. The results were as follows: 1. The tap root elongation rate was faster in the loam soil with low bulk density than in the sandy loam soil with high bulk density. The elongation rates were remarkedly decreased when soil water was lower than the retention of 4 bars in loam soil and that of 1 bars in sandy loam soil. 2. Tap root elongation rate sharply decreased as increased soil strength higher than $2kgf/cm^2$ measured by ELE penetrometer showing curvillinear regression. However, it was low regardless of soil strength when soil water retention was 10 bars in sandy loam soil. 3. From the pot experiment, the total length of roots were longer in loam soil than in sandy loam soil and was longer in the soils with lower bulk density. The average radius of fine roots grown in sandy loam soil was larger than that grown in loam soil. The total surface area of roots was greater in the loam soil with low bulk density than in the sandy loam soil with high bulk density as the total length of roots. 4. The amounts of nutrient uptake by soybean shoots were greater in loam soil primarily due to more production of dry matter than in sandy loam soil. The nitrogen influx rates through the unit surface area were 597 to $753nmoles/day-cm^2$ in loam soil and 222 to $365nmoles/day\;cm^2$ in sandy loam soilshowing higher value in higher bulk density. The potasium influx rates were 99 to $175nmoles/day-cm^2$, and those of phosphate were 26 to $46nmoles/day\;cm^2$. Those of Ca and Mg were 175 to 246 and 163 to $205nmoles/day\;cm^2$. The difference in nutrient influx rates between bulk densities of these elements were lower than that of nitrogen.

This study was conducted to investigate most effective the optimum lime content for lime-clay modification. To achieve the aim, characteristics of compaction and compressive strength were tested by adding of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% lime (Hydrated lime) of dry weight of the clay. Distilled water was added 10, 15, 20 and 25% of dry weight of lime-clay mixture. In this test, the compressive strength of the specimens was measured according to the following curing period : 7, 21, 28, 35 and 49 days. The results are as follows. (1) As lime additive increased, the optimum moisture content of lime-clay mixture was increased and the maximum dry density was decreased. (2) The soil mixture of 20% of the moisture content and 10% of lime additive was shown the maximum compressive strength. (3) As curing period longer, the compressive strength was increased but after 21 curing days, the increasing rate of compressive strength was low as compared with earlier its value. (4) In the range of 20% of the moisture content, compressive strength of mixture of 10% lime additive increased twice compared with that of mixture of 0% lime additive. (5) All of the lime-clay are possible to use for an sub-base material and 20% of moisture content of lime-clay mixture is possible to use for a base material.

HTGR (High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor) is highlighted to next generation power plant for producing the clean hydrogen gas. In this study, the spherical $UO_2$ kernel via $UO_3$ gel particles was prepared by the sol-gel process. Raw material of slightly Acid Deficient Uranyl Nitrate (ADUN) solution, which has pH = 1.10 and $[NO_3]/[U]$ mole ratio = 1.93, was obtained from dissolution of $U_3O_8$ powder with conc.-$HNO_3$. The surface of these spherical $UO_3$ gel particles, which was prepared from the broth solution, consisted of 1 M-uranium, 1 M-HMTA, and urea, were covered with the fine crystallite aggregates, and these particles were so hard that crushed well. But the other $UO_3$ gel particles prepared with the broth solution, consisted of 2 M-uranium, 2 M-HMTA, and urea, have soft surface characteristics and an amorphous phase. This type of $UO_3$ gel particles is some chance of doing possibility of high density from the compaction. The amorphous $UO_3$ gel particles was converted to $U_3O_8$ and then $UO_2$ by calcination at $600^{\circ}C\;in\;4\%\;-\;H_2\;+\;N2$ atmosphere.

Thermoelectric materials have been the topic of intensive research due to their unique dual capability of directly converting heat into electricity or electrical power into cooling or heating. Bismuth telluride ($Bi_2Te_3$) is the best-known commercially used thermoelectric material in the bulk form for cooling and power generation applications In this work we focus on the large scale synthesis of nanostructured undoped bulk nanostructured $Bi_2Te_3$ materials by employing a novel bottom-up solution-based chemical approach. Spark plasma sintering has been employed for compaction and sintering of $Bi_2Te_3$ nanopowders, resulting in relative density of $g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$ while preserving the nanostructure. The average grain size of the final compacts was obtained as 200 nm after sintering. An improved NS bulk undoped $Bi_2Te_3$ is achieved with sintered at $400^{\circ}C$ for 4 min holding time.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the dielectric characteristics of asphalt mixtures and the air voids present in them using ground penetrating radar (GPR) testing. METHODS : To measure the dielectric properties of the asphalt mixtures, the reflection coefficient method and the approach based on the actual thickness of the asphalt layer were used. An air-couple-type GPR antenna with a center frequency of 1 GHz was used to measure the time for reflection from the asphalt/base layer interface. A piece of aluminum foil was placed at the interface to be able to determine the reflection time of the GPR signal with accuracy. An asphalt pavement testbed was constructed, and asphalt mixtures with different compaction numbers were tested. After the GPR tests, the asphalt samples were cored and their thicknesses and number of air voids were measured in the laboratory. RESULTS : It was found the dielectric constant of asphalt mixtures tends to decrease with an increase in the number of air voids. The dielectric constant values estimated from the reflection coefficient method exhibited a slight correlation to the number of air voids. However, the dielectric constant values measured using the approach based on the actual asphalt layer thickness were closely related to the asphalt mixture density. Based on these results, a regression equation to determine the number of air voids in asphalt mixtures using the GPR test method was proposed. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that the number of air voids in an asphalt mixture can be calculated based on the dielectric constant of the mixture as determined by GPR testing. It was also found that the number of air voids was exponentially related to the dielectric constant, with the coefficient of determination, $R^2$, being 0.74. These results suggest that the dielectric constant as determined by GPR testing can be used to improve the construction quality and maintenance of asphalt pavements.
An experimental chamber was fabricated to observe the gas diffusion behavior of leak gas from underground city-gas pipeline. It was made of acryl so that feeding of gas and the measuring points of the gas could be varied in each experiment. The MOS sensors were used to measure the concentrations of leak gas. The soil media such as the Jumunjin standard sand and the granite weathered soil were used to measure the gas diffusion and the change of leak gas concentrations was measured with time for various gas flow rate. As the distance between the leak point of gas and the measuring point of MOS sensor decreases, or the leak rate increases, the detection time of gas at a measuring points decreases and the gas concentration increases quickly and the concentration of the gas at steady state also increases. As the density of granite weathered soil is higher than that of Jumunjin standard sand for compaction, the detection time of leak gas in the granite weathered soil was longer than that in the Jumunjin standard soil. The leak gas concentrations in the granite weathered soil were lower than those in the Jumunjin standard sand at the beginning of gas leaking from a pipe, but inverse phenomenon was occured at steady state.

In order to the influence of grain size distribution on compressive strength and coefficient of permeability, unconfined compression test and permeability test were performed for seventy samples that have various grain-size distributions. Its results are as follows: 1. Maximum unconfined compressive strength appears at the dry side of optimum moisture content. 2. Unconfined compressive strength is proportional to the increase of percent passing of No. 200 sieve. 3. Precent of deformation in failure increases in proportion to the increase of percent passing of No. 200 sieve, and modulus of No. 200 sieve, and modulus of deformation also increases in proportion to percent passing of No. 200 sieve. 4. Unconfined compressive strength increases in proportion to uniformity coefficient, liquid limit and plastic index, but it decreases gradually according to the increase of coefficient of grading and classification area. 5. Maximum dry density decreases according to the increase of void ratio. 6. Coefficient of permeability decreases according to the increase of percent passing of No. 200 sieve, and when percent of No. 200 sieve, and when percent passing of No. 200 enlarged more than 40%, it becomes less than $10^{-6}cm/sec$ which is the limit of coefficient of permeability of core material for earth dam proposed by Lee. 7. Coefficient of permeability increases according to the increase of coefficient of grading, classification area and index of Talbot formula r, but it was rather decrease by the increase of uniformity coefficient. 8. Coefficient of permeability seems to depend on the size and the shape of the flow path which is a series of void to be concerned by the size and the proprton of soil grain, even though void ratios are same.

The experimental study of the behavior of dry medium and loose sandy soil under the action of a single impulsive load is carried out. Different falling masses from different heights were conducted using the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) to provide the single pulse energy. The responses of soils were evaluated at different locations (vertically below the impact plate and horizontally away from it). These responses include; displacements, velocities, and accelerations that are developed due to the impact acting at top and different depth ratios within the soil using the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) and accelerometers (ARH-500A Waterproof, and Low capacity Acceleration Transducer) that are embedded in the soil and then recorded using the multi-recorder TMR-200. The behavior of medium and loose sandy soil was evaluated with different parameters, these are; footing embedment, depth ratios (D/B), diameter of the impact plate (B), and the applied energy. It was found that increasing footing embedment depth results in: amplitude of the force-time history increases by about 10-30%. due to increase in the degree of confinement with the increasing in the embedment, the displacement response of the soil will decrease by about 25-35% for loose sand, 35-40% for medium sand due to increase in the overburden pressure when the embedment depth increased. For surface foundation, the foundation is free to oscillate in vertical, horizontal and rocking modes. But, when embedding a footing, the surrounding soil restricts oscillation due to confinement which leads to increasing the natural frequency, moreover, soil density increases with depth because of compaction, that is, tendency to behave as a solid medium.

In order to examine the unsaturated shear strength characteristics of compacted weathered gneiss soils, the constant water content compression (CWCC) test was carried out. Specimens were made by static compaction under two densities conditions. The shear behavior in accordance with an initial suction obtained by varying initial degrees of saturation was evaluated. The suction could be directly measured by the use of the ceramic disk and the pore-water pressure transducer. The results of the peak shear strength from the CWCC test were examined using the relationship with Mp line from triaxial test under the saturated state, that is, by means of the suction stress which was calculated using the measured suction. In addition, the applicability of the suctions stress to the unsaturated shear behaviour of compacted weathered gneiss soils was discussed by applying Suction stress-SWCC Method (SSM).
