  • This paper proposes a current control algorithm to reduce the torque ripple to commutation in unipolar PWM inverter-fed trapezoidal brushless dc motor drives. In this paper, we analyze the average voltage variation of the conducting phase due to commutation, and design a current controller to compensate for the average voltage variation. The proposed method predicts the duration of commutation to reduce the torque ripple due to over-compensation. Experimental results are presented that validate the proposed method.

  • In this paper, a commutation torque minimization method using parameter observer for a brushless DC motor fed by a voltage source inverter is described. In order to investigate the nature of the commutation torque ripple in trapezoidal brushless DC motor, a new model of the motor is proposed. The optimal drive voltage to minimize the ripple torque is represented as a function of the motor parameters. Therefore, the important parameter is estimated by least-square algorithm.

  • This paper proposed the ways for reduction of the prominent peak of the tone noise in air conditioning units. In order to find out the sources of the tone noise, the resonant frequencies and modes of the fans were investigated. Also, the effects of the ambient temperatures and material properties of the fans on the tone noise were studied. From the experiments, it was shown that the tone noise was greatly influenced by the torsional resonance of the fan and motor system and commutation frequency. In other words, the torsional resonance of the fan and motor system has not to be close to the commutation frequency (torque ripple frequency) which creates a rate of change in the angular acceleration in order to reduce the tone noise in air conditioning units.

  • When the induction motor is operated by CSI, the commutation capacitance in the CSI circuit is increased according to the increase of large capacitor system. The output voltage spikes are generated at the moment of charge and discharge of the commutation capacitor. Also, since output current comprise a great number of harmonics, torque ripples of the motor are generated, having bad effects on the motor. In this study, by adopting the 18-phase multiple high Frequency Current Source Inverter (HFCSI), torque ripples generated by the voltage spikes are mostly eliminated except the 17th and 19th harmonics. To reduce the voltage spikes comprised in the output voltage, particularly, the methods of eliminating the cause of bad effect upon the motor are proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, by using additional voltage Clamping Curcuit (VCC), it is possible to select the values of commutation capacitor energy loss in commutating, the commutating capacitor, and the capacitor in the clamping circuit.

  • In this paper, analysis of BLDC motor torque ripple characteristic according to current commutation angle. The ideal rectangular current wave and the trapezoidal current wave by current commutation angle and BLDC back-EMF are analyzed mathematically using Fourier series. Moreover, the simulation is performed by Matlab/simulink to compare with experiment results and analyze BLDC motor characteristics.

  • This study proposes a method for compensating for the commutation torque ripple of delta-connected brushless DC motors with low inductance based on a current predictions. At the commutation instant, a phase current at the next sampling period is predicted and compared with the reference phase current to determine whether torque ripples will occur or not. If the predicted current cannot reach the reference phase current, the reference current is modified and the relevant voltage reference is produced to reduce the torque ripple. The validity of the proposed method has been verified by simulation and experimental results. The commutation torque ripple has been decreased by 17.7% at 1,000 rpm and 80% load conditions.

  • Commutation failure can be considered as the severest abnormal operation of thyristor HVDC converter. During the failure, power conversion from DC to AC is stopped until the AC voltage get recovered. The process of thyristor converter is subscribed at normal and abnormal state, respectively. The detection and the protection for Cheju HVDC are explained by computer simulation results.

  • 본 논문에서는 전류시 유도전동기의 누설 인덕턴스 및 직류 링크 인덕터에서 발생하는 손실과 스너버 회로에서 발생하는 손실을 효과적으로 전원 및 부하로 회생하는 새로운 VCC-3를 제안하였으며, VCC-1, VCC-2 및 VCC-3를 3상 유도전동기에 적용하여 부하의 입·출력 특성과 궤환량 등을 측정, 비교·검토한 결과, VCC-3 방식의 GTO CSI가 효율개선 및 안전성 면에서 우수하다는 것을 입증하였다.

  • When induction motor is driven with a load commutated inverter, the output part of the inverter must be capacitive. But, in order to be a good load commutation at the low speed range, very large capacitor or force commutated circuit must be used regarding the capacity of motor. This paper proposed the force commutated circuit for driving the motor in case of the installation of capacitor which can be capable of load commutation at the rating speed. The force commutated circuit is operated by the LC resonant circuit, auxiliary source and SCR, and also composed of the commutation circuit which control the interval of the inverse voltage across the inverter.

역전압 Commutation을 이용한 Thyristor Chopper 에 관한 연구 (A Thyristor Chopper Using Reverse Commutation)

  • A reverse voltage commutating thyristor chopper was described. The chopper consists of commutating capacitor charging circuit and commutating thyristor. By superimposing the charged voltage on capacitor to load voltage. Powerful reverse voltage could be induced on main thyristor cathode. And in that wise the chopping action was performed without all the reactors of the proposed circuit. An energy recovery circuit was employed in the chopper circuit for recovering the energy that was consumed in main thyristor commutation. The operating principles of the chopper circuit was analyzed and experimental results were as following. I) All reactors were eliminated. ii) By applying energy recovery circuit to the chopper, 67% of the consumed energy was recovered to source. iii) Turn off time of the proposed chopper was derived as T=RC ln2.
