Research, development and innovation management in the energy sector

  • This study aimed to observe trends in the literature on research, development, and innovation management in the energy sector, using performance assessment systems. The paper presented a bibliometric analysis of 40 studies on the subject. These materials come from ScienceDirect, Scopus and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) databases from 2006 to 2016. The results showed an increasing trend in the number of publications on the theme, showing the scientific community's interest in the subject. In addition, it was verified that the predominant language used to write the publications was English, the country that most published articles in the area was Brazil and most of the articles were produced through collaboration between researchers. It was found that the journal with the greatest number of publications on the subject was the Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, while the Expert Systems with Applications journal presented the article with the greatest number of citations. This analysis allowed us to identify important points of the research and its future directions, in addition to enabling a better understanding of the world trend of the subject approached.

An inter-comparison between ENDF/B-VIII.0-NECP-Atlas and ENDF/B-VIII.0-NJOY results for criticality safety benchmarks and benchmarks on the reactivity temperature coefficient

  • Since the nuclear data forms a vital component in reactor physics computations, the nuclear community needs processing codes as tools for translating the Evaluated Nuclear Data Files (ENDF) to simulate nuclear-related problems such as an ACE format that is used for MCNP. Errors, inaccuracies or discrepancies in library processing may lead to a calculation that disagrees with the experimentally measured benchmark. This paper provides an overview of the processing and preparation of ENDF/B-VIII.0 incident neutron data with NECP-Atlas and NJOY codes for implementation in the MCNP code. The resulting libraries are statistically inter-compared and tested by conducting benchmark calculations, as the mutualcomparison is a source of strong feedback for further improvements in processing procedures. The database of the benchmark experiments is based on a selection taken from the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments (ICSBEP handbook) and those proposed by Russell D. Mosteller. In general, there is quite good agreement between the NECP-Atlas1.2 and NJOY21(1.0.0.json) results with no substantial differences, if the correct input parameters are used.

Optimal installation of electric vehicle charging stations connected with rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems: a case study

  • Electric vehicles (EVs) have been growing to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transportation sector. The increasing number of EVs requires adequate recharging infrastructure, and at the same time, adopts low- or zero-emission electricity production because the GHG emissions are highly dependent on primary sources of electricity production. Although previous research has studied solar photovoltaic (PV) -integrated EV charging stations, it is challenging to optimize spatial areas between where the charging stations are required and where the renewable energy sources (i.e., solar photovoltaic (PV)) are accessible. Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to support decisions of siting EV charging stations using a spatial data clustering method integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS). This research explores spatial relationships of PV power outputs (i.e., supply) and traffic flow (i.e., demand) and tests a community in the state of Indiana, USA for optimal sitting of EV charging stations. Under the assumption that EV charging stations should be placed where the potential electricity production and traffic flow are high to match supply and demand, this research identified three areas for installing EV charging stations powered by rooftop PV in the study area. The proposed strategies will drive the transition of existing energy infrastructure into decentralized power systems. This research will ultimately contribute to enhancing economic efficiency and environmental sustainability by enabling significant reductions in electricity distribution loss and GHG emissions driven by transportation energy.

Idaho national laboratory to demonstrate collaboration first versus competition to accelerate achieving a secure clean energy future by 2031

  • Idaho National Laboratory (INL) announced at COP27 it would reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2031. As a Nuclear, Energy and Environment, and National Homeland Security laboratory, the predominant solution to closing the clean energy gap will include nuclear as a safe, clean, reliable and affordable electricity source with the additional benefit of producing heat and hydrogen to fuel INL's large transportation fleet. INL's collaboration first vs. competition is essential to the program's success. The focused actions in INL's Nuclear Roadmap include: Infrastructure, Licensing/Regulatory, Financial, Time to Market, Fuel Cycle and Public Confidence/Communications. The roadmap also includes nuclear technology innovations and creative partnerships with utility providers, regulators, businesses, community members, and Indigenous Peoples to accelerate deployment of advanced reactors. Through development of the Net-Zero Nuclear Roadmap, INL will offer a model to provide safe and secure energy for the nation and the world by: (1) establishing the necessary infrastructure on its 890-square mile site to support demonstration, (2) showing proven pathways through the licensing and regulation process, (3) partnering with utilities to ensure commercial application, and (4) collaborating with industry to site new technologies.

NiMo LDHs Nanosheets-Coupled V2C MXene-Based Heterocatalyst for Enhanced Overall Water Splitting

  • The rapid increase in the demand for energy has put huge pressure on fossil fuels. The continuous overutilization of these existing non-renewable energy sources has been causing severe environmental concerns. In these regards, electrochemical water splitting has gained huge attention for producing green hydrogen, a superior energy source with high gravimetric energy density (120 MJ/kg), as compared with conventional options. Electrochemical water splitting is a viable option for generating green hydrogen. However, the various limitations of state-of the art Pt/C and RuO2- based electrocatalysts has motivated the scientific community to develop novel cathode (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)) and anode (oxygen evolution reaction (OER)) electrocatalysts. In our present study, we have achieved a new milestone by fabricating the NiMo-based transition metal LDHs coupled V2C MXene support based heterocatalyst. The synergistic impact of NiMo LDHs (corrosion resistance, favorable intrinsic catalytic properties, etc.) and V2C (high electrical conductivity, pseudocapacitive behavior, etc.) has resulted in the HER and OER at smaller overpotential of 135 and 370 mV at the current density of 10 and 30 mA cm-2 in an alkaline (1.0 M KOH) environment.

Food and Nutrient Consumption Patterns of the Korean Adult Population by Income Level - 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey (소득수준에 따른 우리나라 성인의 식품 및 영양소 섭취수준 비교 - 2001 국민건강$\cdot$영양조사 결과를 중심으로)

  • To explore the relationship between economic status and food and nutrient intake patterns, the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey result was analyzed. Dietary intake data of 6,978 Korean adults of 20 years and older who participated in the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey were used along with their demographic data. Economic status of the subjects was classified into the following 4 groups based on the self-reported average monthly income of household with reference to the minimum monthly living expenses (MLE) in 2001 : low < $100\%$ MLE $\leq$ middle < $200\%$ MLE $\leq$ high < $300\%$ MLE $\leq$ higher, Individuals in the higher income class had significantly higher mean intake for most of the nutrients including energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat, calcium, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin C, and a higher percentage of energy intake from fat. In addition, they consumed more animal foods including meats, eggs, fish/shellfish, milk/dairy products and fats. On the other hand, the mean intakes of individuals in the lower economic class for calcium, vitamin A, and riboflavin were lower than $75\%$ of RDAs. And, there was a predominant difference in contribution of fat to total energy intake among the groups of different economic status. These results showed that household income is an important factor influencing the food and nutrient intake patterns of the Korean adult population. Although individuals at different age classes may respond differently to a change in economic status, developing and implementing nutrition policy and intervention programs for those nutritionally vulnerable groups should consider the economic status as an important factor to customize and differentiate the content of the Program. A Study of the Obesity Index and Psychosocial Factors Influencing Obesity among Adolescent Girls (여고생들의 비만도 및 비만과 관련된 사회심리적 요인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary intake, obesity index and psychosocial factors influencing obesity among 200 high school girls in Seoul. The Social Cognitive Theory provided the Conceptual basis for this study. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to examine factors related to obesity, including self-efficacy for controlling overeating, social support for eating behavior, perception of body image and weight control, nutrition knowledge, and attitudes toward obesity. The data were analyzed using t-test and multiple logistic regression. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The mean age of the girls was 16.4 years, and the rate of overweight and obesity(measured by obesity index) was 27.0$\%$. 2) The mean energy intake of subjects was 1832.3$\pm$384.0kcal. The energy derived from carbohydrates, proteins and fats was 62.7$\%$, 13.8$\%$, and 23.5$\%$, respectively. There was no significant difference between the obese and the comparison group in energy intake. 3) The result of multivariate analysis indicated that obesity had a significant relation to the perception of ideal body image, social support for eating behavior, and self-efficacy for controlling overeating(p〈0.01). As subjects preferred thinner body images(OR=0.39) and received less social support(OR=0.93), the odds of being classified as obese increased. The odds of being obese were also associated with self-efficacy, however, the relation was not strong(OR=1.04). 4) Specific social support was related to obesity among adolescent girls. As subjects received more support from family member, the odds of being obese decreased. The emotional support as well as family member's positive nutrition behavior plays a significant role. In addition, instrumental support from friends was associated with obesity. With repect to self-efficacy, the odds of being obese were increased as subjects felt less confident in controlling overeating when tempting food was placed in front of them or after an argument. In contrast, the obese group felt more confident in controlling overeating for the rest of the specific situations examined. These findings suggest that educational interventions for weight control should incorporate strategies to help participants realize their degree of obesity, to reduce the discrepancy between current and ideal body image, to elicit and maintain social support from friends and family, and to increase the self-efficacy for changing eating behaviors. Preference of the Mountain Trail by the Visibility of the Landscape Resources - Case Study of the Seoraksan National Park, Korea - (경관자원 가시도가 탐방로 선호에 미치는 영향 - 설악산국립공원을 대상으로 -)

  • This study was conducted to find methods of qualitative landscape assessment for vegetational landscapes using ecological analysis. The study site was Seoraksan National Park in Korea. For this study, differing unique landscape resources were categorized and identified according to ecosystems. After identifying the study areas, the relationship between trail visitor preference and the amount of visible overexposure caused by people to the resources was examined. Landscape resources chosen for ecological analysis at Seoraksan National Park were subalpine vegetation community, high mountain rocks, ombrogenous deciduous broadleaf forest in the valley area, edaphic climax community, big tree community, flowering tree dominant community, autumnal tree dominant community and needle-leaf forest in the subalpine area. As a result of the study, it was found that the landscape resources with the highest correlation to visitor trail preference were big tree community area, flowering tree dominant community area, and needle-leaf forest in the subalpine area. As a result of overlapping the analysis of the amount of visible overexposure to the landscape resources and the analysis of preferential use of trails by visitors, guidance for the appropriate season for each trail can be provided. Since a positive correlation exists between certain sections of the natural landscapes and visitor preference, ecological impact on landscape resource ecosystems did not appear to cover wide areas of the trails, but was limited to certain areas preferred by visitors.

The Research of an Analysis of Community Consciousness in Local Area for Developing Reading Contents: Case of G City (독서문화콘텐츠 개발을 위한 지역공동체의식 분석에 관한 연구 - G시를 대상으로 -)

  • Public policies in regard to developing reading culture programs and the contents, and in running public libraries have been used to overcome existing social issues such as regional self-centeredness and cultural lagging. It means that public libraries are playing an important role to encourage communications within local communities. The purpose of this research is therefore to analyze the concept of local community, and develop reading culture and contents to reinforce the concept. This research also targeted to analyze the required contents in reading culture. Through the case study of "G" city, the research analyzed their citizenship and sense of local community and the requests. As a result, the requited subjects were for economics, unemployment, poverty, aging, and housing order. For the subjects of environment were environment pollution and energy order. For the subjects of human rights, disabilities, and multi-cultural were requested. For the subject of education, school violence, tutoring, and truly teaching were requested. Based on the requirements, 221 items of reading lists, DVD clips, and abstracts are developed as well as 4 programs of reading culture.

Plant Community Structure of Daetjae(hill)~Baekbongryung(ridge), the Baekdudaegan Mountains (백두대간 댓재에서 백봉령구간 마루금의 식물군집구조 특성)

  • Baekdudan has 670km long within South Korea, so the study for detail vegetation characteristics is needed. In this study, we surveyed the plant community structure from Daetjae to Baekbongryung for the next restoration and management plan. We designated 40 quadrats ($10m{\times}10m(100m^2)$ for this study. As a result of TWINSPAN, plant community separated 8 different communities such as Abies koreana comm., Pinus densiflora comm., Quercus mongolica comm. and Larix kaempferi comm. etc. Abies koreana comm. and Pinus densiflora comm. which is mainly located in the mountain ridge and near rocks are needed avoidance from the competition with Quercus mongolica comm. The possibility of atrophy of these communities is to be high, the protection is needed. Species diversity index was between 0.8046~1.1283. Most communities have multi-layer structure and have the ecological value of protection.
