The Effect of Parenting Processes on Sexual Attitudes and Sexual Behaviors among College Students (성과 관련된 부모역할이 대학생의 성태도 및 성행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of parenting processes(parental support, monitoring, communication about sexuality) on college students' sexual attitudes and sexual behaviors. For this purpose, a survey was conducted using self-administered questionnaires with 361 college students. The results showed that both sexual attitudes and sexual behaviors were different according to sex, age, and dating period. In addition, sexual attitudes of males were correlated with father's support, mother's support and monitoring of parenting processes. It also found that the direct sexual behaviors were correlated with mother's support. Finally, results of multiple regression analysis showed that sex, parents' support, monitoring and communication about sexuality influenced sexual attitudes. Sex and parents' support had indirect influence on sexual behaviors. Experience of dating and communication about sex had direct influence on sexual behavior.

Sexual Knowledge and Sexual Attitude and Parent Efficacy among Parents of Preschool Child (학령전기 자녀를 둔 부모 성지식, 성태도, 자녀 성교육에 대한 부모효능감의 융합적 비교)

  • This study was done to identify sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and parent efficacy among parents of preschool child. Participants were 70 couples, parents of preschool child. Data were analyzed using chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA. The difference in recognition and attitude about sexuality education for children among parents, person in charge of sexuality education for children(p=.043), parents' experience of sexuality education for their children(p=.043), the number of communication about sexuality with their children(p=.019), the source of information about sexuality(p=.024) showed significant difference. Sexual knowledge(p=.018) and sexual attitude(p=.006) showed meaningful difference. As a result of this study, it is necessary to develop and conduct differentiated education programs when teaching parents about sexuality education for their children in preschool period, considering these characteristics.

Open Communication About Reproductive Health Is Associated With Comprehensive HIV Knowledge and a Non-stigmatising Attitude Among Indonesian Youth: A Cross-sectional Study

  • Objectives: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention among youth seems under-prioritised compared to other key populations. HIV knowledge and stigma are important parts of HIV prevention. To inform HIV prevention among youths, this study quantitatively analysed the associations between open communication regarding sexuality and sexual health, comprehensive HIV knowledge, and non-stigmatising attitudes in Indonesia. Methods: This study used data from the Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) 2017. The analysis included unmarried men and women aged 15-25 years old. Comprehensive HIV knowledge and a stigmatising attitude were defined according to the IDHS 2017. Open communication about sexuality and sexual health was defined as the number of people with whom participants could openly discuss these topics in their direct network of friends, family, and service providers, with a scale ranging from 0 to a maximum of 7. Primary analysis used binomial logistic regression with weighting adjustments. Results: The final analysis included 22 864 respondents. Twenty-two percent of youth had no one in their direct network with whom to openly discuss sexual matters, only 14.1% had comprehensive HIV knowledge, and 85.9% showed stigmatising attitudes. Youth mostly discussed sex with their friends (55.2%), and were less likely to discuss it with family members, showing a predominant pattern of peer-to-peer communication. Multivariate analysis showed that having a larger network for communication about sexuality and sexual health was associated with more HIV knowledge and less stigmatising attitudes. Conclusions: Having more opportunities for open sex communication in one's direct social network is associated with more HIV knowledge and less stigmatising attitudes.

The Development of a Healthy Sexuality Education Program for Early Adolescent (초기청소년의 건강한 성을 위한 프로그램 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a sexuality education program for early adolescents. The overall goals of the program were to not only increase knowledge and skirts, but also to improve the awareness of healthy sex in order to promote premarital abstinence, parent-teen communication and parental awareness of the importance of parental roles and responsibilities in prevention of sexual problems of the early adolescent. The program consisted of six sessions: puberty changes during adolescence, the meaning of sexuality, sexual drives in dating relationships, understanding of the risks associated with early sexual involvement and support for postponing sexual activities, managing and avoiding sexually risky situations, the importance of communications with parents about issues related to sexuality. The program evaluation had three steps: pre-test, immediate post-test and two month follow-up post test. The results showed that the program had a significantly positive effect on the improvement of adolescent's knowledge about sex, and attitudes and behaviors toward sex, particularly in the immediate post-test. At the two month follow-up assessment, the effect of the program still remained strong, though there was a sight and partial reduction which was not statistically significant. Most of the program participants expressed a high level of satisfaction with the program. Parental involvement appeared to be effective as well. Recommendations for further study include: to re-evaluate the curriculum for various other participants. In addition, further study which would compare post-test results of these participants with a comparison group of peers who did not receive the program would be valuable. The author believes that the program can be used in implementing specific subjects (sessions) in new settings, as well as implementing the entire package of the program.

A preliminary study for the evaluation of the effects of sex education program on college students (대학생의 성교육 효과측정을 위한 기초 연구)

  • This study was performed to provide preliminary data for the development of a useful instrument to measure the effect of sex education. The study was conducted with the voluntary participation of 155 college students enrolled in the course "Sexuality and Relationship" at Y university in Seoul. At the end of that course, they were asked to write freely about the change they had experienced on sexuality. All meaningful statements were elicited and classified into 7 categories; "Change of Knowledge", "Enlightenment", "Change of Attitude on Sexuality", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of. Identity", "Change of Emotion", "Change of Behavior:' There were significant changes in the areas of knowledge(28. 6%), enlightenment(27.4%), and attitudes(20.3%) about sexuality among these 7 categories. The Change of Knowledge category consists of 3 areas: "concretion of knowledge", "increase of information", and "correction of misunderstanding." In the category of Enlightenment, total 12 areas are included: "sex role", "erception of lack of knowledge", "importance of family", "life plan", "parent role", "value of life", "equality", "sexual autonomy", "importance of sexuality", "freedom of sexuality", "perception of sexual problem", and "meaning of love." The Attitude Change category consists of 8 areas. These are "being natural", "being progressive", "being sensitive", "being truthful", "being expressive", "being cautious", "being responsible", and "being confident". The category of Buildup of Ability includes 4 areas: "problem solving", "sex education", "relationship", and "communication". The category of Buildup of Identity includes "sexual identity", and "value of sexuality". The Emotional Change category includes 3 areas: "positive feeling", "negative feeling", and "breaking from negative feeling on sexuality". The Behavior Change category includes "sex-related behavioral change". In conclusion, up to now most researches on sex education effect measures only changes of knowledge, attitude, and behavior. But we believe the changes in "Enlightenment", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of Identity", "Change of Emotion", should be included in addition to knowledge, attitude, and behavior in the development of an instrument to measure the sex education effects. And the effect of sex education should measure the degree of learning of autonomy, enlightenment, and ability of behavior and so on rather than studying the simple changes in sexuality.enment", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of Identity", "Change of Emotion", should be included in addition to knowledge, attitude, and behavior in the development of an instrument to measure the sex education effects. The Ecological Variables Affecting Adolescent's Sexual Behavior (청소년 성행동에 영향을 미치는 생태학적 변인)

  • We investigated the ecological variables of adolescent sexual behavior. We grouped the behaviors into organism, microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem. The variables belonging to the organism group were sexual attitude, sex, grade, sexual knowledge, sexual education, dating experience, problem behaviors, and self-control. The microsystem variables included the parent-adolescent communication about sexuality, parental monitoring, parent educational background, friend relationships, and school environment. Moreover, the mesosystem variables included family-peer and family-school relationships. The exosystem variables were comprised of neighborhood environment and pornography. The study group included 369 adolescents from the first and second grade of several high school in Daegu, Korea. We found that the factors affecting adolescent sexual behavior included grade, sex, dating experience, self-control, smoking, and pursuing sexual pleasure. As well, contact with deviant friends, father-adolescent communication about sexuality, school type, and attachment to teacher. In addition the family-peer relationship also affected adolescent's sexual behaviors as well as pornography and neighborhood environment. Lastly the variable belonging to the organism group was found to have the greatest effect on adolescent, sexual behavior compared to the other variables.

Paradox of the Multiculture-oriented TV Programs - Double-faced Phenomenon of Multicultural Traits and Sexuality in the Program of KBS-TV (다문화성 TV 방송 프로그램의 패러독스 - KBS-TV의 <미녀들의 수다>에 내재된 '다문화성'과 '섹슈얼리티'의 혼재성)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how much multi-cultural traits the multiculture-oriented TV programs would have and how they tended to represent it with what kinds of meaning structures. As an object of this study, the authors chose the Program of KBS-TV which had been discussed seriously to raise a multi-cultural issue as well as a sexuality issue of lady guests. They collected 70 weekly programs from Nov. 26 of 2006 to March 31, 2008, and finally selected and analyzed 5 weekly programs as main analytic data. They tried to analyze them with various semiotic research methods, especially, linguistic semiotic research methods and pictorial research methods. As results of this study, it was found that this Program was based on multiful-levels of meaning structure: that is, superficial level, representation level and in-depth level. The superficial level of this program presented various multi-cultural traits through many and various talks of lady guests. Its representation level indicated some patterns of discourses about issues and agendas of the talks among lady guests. The in-depth level was based on the sexuality of lady guests as well as the male-dominant ideology. It was finally implicated that this Program was based on the sexuality and feminity of lady guests even though it tried to advocate its multi-cultural traits.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of the community welfare center. for the purpose this study consisted of three main subjects(1) A analysis about the programs of the community welfare center (2) A analysis about the experience of the user and non-user on the community welfare center (3) A analysis about the demand for family welfare service program For the data set 398 married women living in Jeonju were chosen. The data were analyzed with the spss pc+ program. An Exploratory Study on Digital Contents-based Life-long Sex Education Program for Persons with Mental Retardation (지적장애인 대상의 성교육 프로그램 현황과 과제 : 디지털 교육콘텐츠를 중심으로)

  • There is growing recognition that individuals with mental retardation are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse due to multiple factors including life-long dependence on adults for care, trained compliance, social isolation, lack of education about sexuality and sexual abuse, and a societal view that devalues people with disabilities. Teaching about sexual abuse only may raise an individual's anxiety without promoting a healthy sexual identity. For many individuals with mental retardation, the provision of formal sexual health education and sexual abuse prevention training has been shown to be protective against exploitation as well as increase appropriate sexual behavior. To maximize the reach of formal sexual health education and abuse prevention promotion effort, this article suggest exploiting the internet and digital contents as delivery vehicles that have uniquely suitable communication characteristics and outstanding ability to reach large numbers of persons with mental retardation. We review the sexual health education programs, utilizing the internet and digital contents, for individuals with mental retardation. We also suggest the revised version of the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model of health behaviour change (Fisher & Fisher, 1992), and give a brief discussion of how useful this model is for constructing a life-long sex education program for persons with mental retardation.

Development of a Korean Sexual Satisfaction Scale (한국 성인의 성만족 측정도구 개발)

  • Purpose; The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure sexual satisfaction in Korean adults. Method: Development of items for the instrument was done by a collecting, reorganizing, reducing and selecting process based on the literature. A total of 19 items were selected in this process. For evaluation of the appropriateness of the 19 items, questionnaires were given to an expert group consisting of 18 professionals (7 men and 11 women). Eighteen items having a response of 70% in 'very good' item or 'good' item were included as items for the instrument. With these 18 items, a 5 point Likert scale was developed, and reliability and validity tests of the scale were done. The subjects for the test were 1,127 Korean adults living in 11 areas in Korea, Data were collected from Dec. 1, 2000 to Feb. 28, 2001 and analyzed with SPSS/PC+ 10.0 program. Item analysis and factor analysis were used to assess the reliability and validity of the scale. Chronbach alpha and corrected item-total correlation were obtained to verify internal consistency, and principal component analysis with the varimax rotation was used to identify structure validity of the developed tool. Result: Reliability of the scale was .9503 and corrected item-total correlations of the items were distributed from .5208 to 7899. As a result of the factor analysis, the items were categorized into three factors. The cumulative variance of the three factors was 67.1%, and all of the variances of the factors were above 5%. Because factor 1 (8 items) indicated a special feeling of psychological satisfaction with sexual activity, it was named 'psychological factor'. Factor 2 (8 items) indicated a feeling of satisfaction in the interaction with sexual partner through communication and variation, therefore it was named 'interactional factor'. Factor 3 (2 items) was about the frequency and duration of sexual intercourse and indicated physical dimensions of satisfaction, so it was named 'physical factor'. The average score for sexual satisfaction of the 1,127 subjects was 65.32 (${\pm}12.71$), and histogram of the score showed a normal distribution with skewness - .425. Conclusion: Finally, a Korean Sexual Satisfaction Scale(KSSS) was accepted as a 5 point Likert scale with 18 items after the statistical test for reliability and validity. In conclusion, KSSS is a useful instrument which is valid and reliable can be used to understand the sexuality of Korean adults.
