The aim of this study is to explores the possibility of applying new aquaponics using guppies, a tropical fish breeding as companion fish at home, different from the aquaponics system using fish species such as loach, carp, and catfish for commercial purposes. To facilitate the application of Aquaponics at home, a system was established by connecting a water tank, water plants, hydroponic pots, plant growth LEDs, and Arduino sensors using Internet of Things(IoT) technology. As a hydroponic crops, lettuce that can be easily obtained and consumed at home was selected. In order to confirm the applicability of aquaponics using tropical fish, the growth rates of hydroponic crops in the same environment were compared as a control. The growth rate of aquaponics crops using tropical fish was about 77.4% of that of hydroponic crops. This will produce the same effect as hydroponic cultivation if conditions correspond with enough fish quantity to feed plant and appropriate pH control for growth are met. It can be seen that, and in the future, it can be used to develop an Aquaphonics standard system applicable at home.

One of the ways to increase the production for aquaculture is through the cultivation of monosexuals by ensuring genital reversal from which energy for reproduction is diverted towards growth. Masculinization has been identified as one of the most prominent techniques, where sex development was directed from female to male. This approach only altered the phenotype and not the genotype. The red claw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) was a relatively new commercial commodity, and the males were known to grow faster than females. Hence, it was proposed to use monocultures comprising an all-male population to increase yield using steroid hormone, synthetic 17α-methyltestosterone. However, this technique generated residues that detrimentally affect human health, the environment, and cultivated organisms. Therefore, finding new safe natural steroid sources was essential, and one of which is exploring of natural hormones extracted from the viscera of sea cucumbers (Holothuria scabra Jaeger). This study focused on the determination of male formation and testosterone levels among juvenile crayfish, after immersing in sea cucumber steroid extract (SCSE). A completely random design with factorial was used with two variables, encompassing the varied doses (0, 2, 4 mg/L, 2 mg/L 17α-methyl testosterone as control group) and immersion times of 18 and 30 h. The result showed the dose-dependent ability of SCSE increase the male genital formation and promote the testosterone level of juvenile crayfish. In addition, the testosterone was influenced by dose and immersion duration time, with the highest level of testosterone observed in treatments of 4 mg/L SCSE with 30 h immersion was 0.248 ng/mL, while the male percentage was 77%. In conclusion, the combination of dose and immersion time significantly affected growth and testosterone levels.

Persistence and degradation patterns of acequinocyl and its metabolite, hydroxyl-acequinocyl (acequinocyl-OH) and fenpyroximate in butterburs (Petasites japonicus Max.) were investigated after pesticide application. Butterburs, one of the minor crops in South Korea, was planted in two plots (plot A for double and plot B for single application) in a greenhouse. Butterburs samples were also planted in a separate plot without pesticide treatment, as the control. A commercial pesticide containing acequinocyl and fenpyroximate was applied to the foliage of butterburs at hourly intervals after dilution. Recoveries of acequinocyl and acequinocyl-OH were 78.6-84.7% and 83.7-95.5%, respectively; the relative standard deviation of the two compounds were less than 5%. The method limit of quantification was 0.01 mg/kg. The total (Ʃ) acequinocyl residues in butterburs reduced by 96.0% at 14 days and 75.9% at 7 days, in plot A and B, respectively, after final pesticide applications. The biological half-life (DT50) of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate, calculated using the dissipation rate, was 3.0 days and 4.0 days, respectively. These data were used to set up maximum residue and safe standard levels when the pesticides are applied to control pests during butterbur cultivation. Risk assessment results showed that the maximum % acceptable daily intake was 7.74% for Ʃ acequinocyl and 0.16% for Ʃ fenpyroximate. The theoretical maximum daily intake of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate was 26.3% and 35.8%, respectively. In conclusion, the concentrations of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate in butterburs pose no significant health risks to Koreans.
Lipase is a well-known and highly in-demand enzyme. During the last decade, several lipase optimization studies have been reported. However, production costs have always been a bottleneck for commercial-scale microbial enzyme production. This research aimed to optimize the conditions for lipase production by Limtongozyma siamensis DMKU-WBL1-3 via a One-Factor-At-a-Time (OFAT) approach combined with statistical methods while using a low-cost substrate. Results suggest that low-cost substrates can be substituted for all media components. An optimal medium was found, using response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite design (CCD), to consist of 0.50% (w/v) sweet whey, 0.40% (w/v) yeast extract (food grade), and 2.50% (v/v) palm oil with the medium pH adjusted to 4 under shaking flask cultivation. From an economic point of view, this work was successful in reducing production costs while increasing lipase productivity. The medium costs were reduced by 87.5% of the original cost while lipase activity was increased by nearly 6-fold. Moreover, lipase production was further studied in a 2-L stirred-tank fermentor. Its activity was 1,055.6 ± 0.0 U/ml when aeration and agitation rates were adjusted to 1 vvm and 170 rpm, respectively. Interestingly, under this optimal lipase production, the yeast showed accumulated lipids inside the cells. The primary fatty acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) that is typically linked to health benefits. This study hence reveals promising lipase production and lipid accumulation by L. siamensis DMKU-WBL1-3 that are worthy of further study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of immature compost on the amount of nutrient content, heavy metal concentration, and application rate that were used for lettuce cultivation. The characteristics of the two composts (Compost A (CA) was immature compost and Compost B (CB) was mature compost) were evaluated upon mixing with commercial soil at 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% (w/w). The poor chemical characteristics were appeared by use of immature compost as soil amendment; the 50% and 75% rates were weakly acidic at pH 5.39 and 5.50, respectively. The total carbon content at using of 75% of the immature compost and mature compost increased the most to 14.5 and 6.5% and it significantly increased concentrations of the total nitrogen and phosphorus compared to control. As for 75% mature compost rate increased significantly the concentrations of Cu ($128mg\;kg^{-1}$), Zn ($260mg\;kg^{-1}$), Pb ($0.32mg\;kg^{-1}$) and, Cd ($0.48mg\;kg^{-1}$) compared to control, and the highest As concentration increased significantly at 75% and 50% (6.69 and $6.28mg\;kg^{-1}$) including in 25% immature compost as $6.48mg\;kg^{-1}$. However, all of the high compost rates significantly decreased the shoot biomass of lettuce. The immature compost was potentially amended at an application rate of 25% due to a slight salinity and low risk to heavy metal uptake on lettuce growth. This use may be available if the rate is lower than that used in this trial.
All intra-specific hybrids among ASI $2172{\times}2104$, $2172{\times}2307$, $2186{\times}2172$ and $2186{\times}2307$ in P. salmoneostramineus produced pink fruiting bodies as like wild parental types. However, three hybrids of them between ASI 2186 and 2104 were white fruiting bodies. A new commercial strain "Noeul" of Pink Oyster mushroom was developed by intra-specific hyphal anastomosis. It was improved with hybridization between monokaryotic strain derived from ASI 2172 and ASI 2104. The optimum temperature of mycelial growth and fruiting body development were $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ and $19{\sim}24^{\circ}C$, respectively. The pileus was bright reddish pink. Commercial strain "Noeul" was as prolific as the more commonly cultivated Pleurotus ostreatus in the conversion of substrate mass to mushrooms using bottle cultivation. Mushroom cultivator can save money for mushroom growing on summer in Korea. Mushrooms should be picked when moderately young, and handled carefully so as to not bruise the brilliantly colored gills. This pink color makes marketing an interesting challenge depending upon the market niche.
Using commercial radish varieties for processing, about 30% of radish was discarded due to the root shape and low purity. To raise the processing ability, we tried to develop a new variety producing H-shaped root. As another characteristic required in variety for processing is high purity, we tried to raise purity using simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers for testing seed purity in every segregating generation. To develop Male-sterile (MS) seeding parent, we crossed commercial variety of 'Gwan dong spring' and 'Gyeo ryong spring'. One elite inbred was selected as recurrent parent for the MS plant. The major horticultural traits of selected inbred line were disease resistance, late bolting, heat resistance and bright green root top color. To develop pollen parent, we crossed commercial variety of 'Tae sang king' and 'Seoul spring'. We used individual selection method to develop H-shaped hard root and disease resistant inbred. In each segregating generation, we selected one plant based on phenotype and the uniformity of selected plant was tested by SSR markers using self-pollinated seeds. In the first segregating generation, 64.6% of sib plants shared the same band in PCR amplification using ACMP-490 primer and 66.7% using cnu-316 primer. The uniformity of segregating generations using ACMP-490 and cnu-316 raised in second generation to 68.8%, 70.8%, respectively; in third generation to 93.8%, 100%; in fourth generation to 93.8%, 100%; in fifth generation to 95.8%, 100%; in sixth generation to 100%, 100%. A novel cross was made using selected MS parent and pollen parent. When we checker the horticultural traits using autumn cultivation, the novel cross variety produced H-shaped root comparing other commercial varieties and produced highly uniform radish. Thus we registered this novel cross variety as 'YR ORE' at 2013 (Registration No. 4550).
In this study, a low-salt Lentinula edodes soybean paste (LSLESP) with improved palatability and storability relative to traditional Korean soybean paste was developed by utilizing low quality log cultivation of L. edodes. We also conducted quality characteristic analyses of spread jam made from low-salt L. edodes soybean paste (SJLLESP). The lowest salinity content and the highest L (brightness) value was found in LSLESP. According to proximate compositions analysis, crude protein, crude fat, and ash content were higher in commercial soybean paste than in LSLESP. Glucose, fructose, and maltose were the only free sugars detected in commercial soybean paste, whereas arabinose and fucose were additionally detected in LSLESP. Only two types of organic acid, were detected in common in commercially available soybean paste and LSLESP. Four types of organic acid, were detected in SJLLESP due to its added ingredients. The major free amino acids in commercially available soybean paste and LSLESP are histidine, glutamic acid, and arginine. Total amino acid, content was higher in LSLESP (54.81 mg%) than in commercial soybean paste (49.26 mg%). Total free amino acid, content in SJLLESP was 43.01 mg%. Ergosterol and β-glucan contents were highest in SJLLESP. The elevated ergosterol and β-glucan content in low-salt LSLESP relative to commercial soybean paste was significant. In conclusion, LSLESP and SJLLESP contain useful components from L. edodes, and offer the advantage of low salinity. LSLESP and SJLLESP could thus contribute to the development of health foods using L. edodes.

Worldwide production of mushrooms has been increasing by 10-20% every year. Recently, Pleurotus eryngii and P. nebrodensis have become popular mushroom species for cultivation. In particular, China exceeded 8.7 million tons in 2002, which accounted for 71.5% of total world output. A similar trend was also observed in Korea. Two kinds of mushrooms-Gumji (金芝; Ganoderma) and Seoji-are described in the ancient book 'Samguksagi' (History of the three kingdoms; B.C 57~A.D 668; written by Bu Sik Kim in 1145) during the Korea-dynasty. Many kinds of mushrooms are also described in more than 17 ancient books during the Chosun-dynasty (1392~1910) in Korea. Approximately 200 commercial strains of 38 species of mushrooms were developed and distributed to cultivators. The somatic hybrid variety of oyster mushroom, 'Wonhyeong-neutari,' was developed by protoplast fusion, and distributed to growers in 1989. Further, the production of mushrooms as food was 199,829 metric tons, valued at 850 billion Korean Won (one trillion won if mushroom factory products are included) in 2015. In Korea, the major cultivated species are P. ostreatus, P. eryngii, Flammulina velutipes, Lentinula edodes, Agaricus bisporus, and Ganoderma lucidum, which account for 90% of the total production. Since mushroom export was initiated in 1960, the export and import of mushrooms have increased in Korea. Technology was developed for liquid spawn production, and automatic cultivation systems led to the reduction of production cost, resulting in the increase in mushroom export. However, some species were imported owing to high production costs for effective cultivation methods. In academia, RDA scientists have conducted mushroom genome projects since 1997. One of the main outcomes is the whole genome sequencing of Flammulina velutipes for molecular breeding. With regard to medicinal mushrooms, we have been conducting genome research on Cordyceps and its related species for developing functional foods. There are various kinds of beneficial substances in mushrooms; mushroom products, including pharmaceuticals, tonics, healthy beverages, functional biotransformants, and processed foods have also became available on the market. In addition, compost and feed can likewise be made from mushroom substrates after harvest.
In order to investigate the compositional change oil composts during the growing of cultivated mushroom (Agaricus bisporus), composts and mushrooms during the period of filling to ending under commercial conditions were subjected to chemical analyses. The results are summarized as follows and the mechanism of composting for mushroom cultivation was proposed. 1) The temperature change of growing bed and room was observed and the yield of mushroom for each cropping time was recorded to get $15.6kg/m^2$ in total crops. 2) Composts after filling showed pH 8.2 which dropped to 6.4 after casing and continued so up to ending. 3) On the dry weight basis of composts, crude ash increased whereas total nitrogen, ether extract and crude fibre decreased gradually to bring about the lowering of organic matter. 4) Total nitrogen of composts decreased gradually and more insoluble nitrogen was lost than soluble nitrogen. The C/N ratio of composts was initially 21 which was gradually lowered to 16. 5) The losses of ${\alpha}-cellulose$, pentosan and lignin in composts were 87%, 75%, and 60%, respectively, in which ${\alpha}-cellulose$ decreased markedly after casing. 6) Free reducing sugars of composts increased continuously. Gradually increased free amino acids till second cropping decreased again thereafter. Composts at the filling stage contained alanine, glutamic acid, glycine and serine in which glycine decreased markedly whereas proline increased remarkably upon mushroom cultivation. 7) Among minerals of composts, phosphorus and zinc tended to decrease, potassium and copper tended to increase anti sodium showed no marked change. 8) In comparison of mushrooms from different cropping time with respect to proximate composition, minerals, free reducing sugars and amino acids, no marked difference was observed. However, a little higher values were observed in crude fat, free reducing sugars and sodium content for early crops and in free amino acids and phosphorus content for late crops. Twelve free amino acids including alanine, serine, threonine, and glutamic acid were detected in the cultivated mushroom. 9) According to above experimental results, it was possible to support the mechanism of compositing that the formation of ammonia and decomposition of carbohydrates by mesophiles are followed by protein biosynthesis, formation of microbial bodies and nitrogen-rich lignin humus complex by thermophiles, thus supplying necessary nutrients for mushroom growth, along with residual carbohydrates.
