Alstroemeria plants are widely cultivated in many countries especially in Western Europe and North America and popularity has increased in recently due to its long-base life, large variety of colors and low energy requirement during cultivation period. So far, more than 60 species have been released on the commercial market in the world. To meet the demand of consumer and develop the elite Alstroemeria cultivars, conventional breeding including cross-hybridization and selection as well as mutation breeding were used. However, as other important ornamental plants such as lily, rose, carnation and orchids accepted the biotechnological methods, this newly-born approach should be applied and developed an optimized the genetic transformation system. Then, this biotechnological approach can be fused with the conventional breeding methods and thus can be contributed to the production of elite Alstroemeria plants containing agriculturally good genetic traits which are useful for the both farmers and consumers in the future. In this paper, we reviewed the botanical and genetical features of Alstroemeria plants and its biotechnological approaches in the last decades.
This study was conducted to identify a suitable color of light for development of the fruit body in Hypsizygus marmoreus. To accomplish this, samples were irradiated with blue (475 nm), green (525 nm), yellow (590 nm), or red (660 nm) light emitting diodes (LEDs) to induce the formation of fruiting bodies after mycelia growth. The diameter and thickness of the pileus and length of stipes in samples subjected to blue LED treatment were similar to those of subjected to fluorescent light (control), and the lengths of the stipes were highest in response to treatment with the red LED and darkness. The commercial yields of plants subjected to blue and green LED treatment were similar to those of the control. In conclusion, cultivation of H. marmoreus coupled with exposure to blue LED is useful for inducing high quality fruit bodies as well as higher levels of ergosterol, DPPH radical scavenging activity, total polyphenol content and reducing power.
Ginseng(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is a perennial herbaceous plant which grows very slowly. It takes about 3 to 4 years from seeding to collecting the ripe seeds and the ginseng propagation is very difficult. and so, it is very difficult to breed ginseng plant. Ginseng tissue culture was started from at 1960, and ginseng commercial product by in vitro callus culture was saled, however upto now, regenerants were not planted to soil normally. Recently, plant genetic engineering to produce transgenic plants by introducing useful genes has been advanced greatly. In a present paper, transformation of ginseng plants was achieved by co-cultivation with Agrobacterium harboring the binary vector coding Proteinase-II gene, which confer resistant or tolerant to insect pests, The binary vector for transformation was constructed with disarmed Ti-plasmid and with double 35S promoter. The NPT II gene and introduced genes of the transgenic ginseng plants were successfully identified by the PCR. Especially the transgenic ginseng plants were regenerated using new techniques such as repetitive single somatic embryogenesis.

Miscanthus is one of the promising energy crops for producing bioethanol or bioenergy in many countries. A field of about 180 ha for miscanthus plantation was started for demonstration near Geum River in 2011. Since the size of the field is much larger than those of traditional cultivation for one single crop in this country, questions were raised if there are any environmental impacts from the energy crop plantation, particularly on water quality. In this study, water quality of runoff water from three different plots was analyzed for assessing the impacts of energy crop production. The results showed that there were no substantial differences among the plots; control, the first, and the second year growth fields. The concentrations of COD, T-N, and T-P were lower than those in runoff water from agricultural crop fields. The second year field showed a slight higher values of COD and T-N concentrations due to the biodegradation of residue of miscanthus which was not cultivated for observation. Commercial planation of miscanthus in a large scale would not result in a water quality problem when avoiding application of fertilizer as practiced in agricultural crop fields.
The effects of carbon sources on vancomycin production were investigated using Nocardia orientalis CSVC 3300. Among carbon sources tested, glucose, maltose and fructose were effective for the production of vancomycin. Glucose was favored for growth, but decrease the production of vancomycin at the concentration above 7.5%. In comparison, maltose did not decrease the production of vancomycin up to the concentration of 20%. When the mixture of glucose and maltose was used in the ratio 1:3 to 1:4, the highest production of vancomycin was achieved. When glucose concentration was set at 3.0%, catabolite repression could not be observed up to total sugar concentration of 16.0%. Fermentation was carried out using commercial hydrolyzed starch composed of glucose, maltose, maltotriose and maltotetraose, The initial glucose concentration was set at 3.0% and subsequent oligosaccharide consumption was monitored by checking their supernatant with HPLC. During initial cultivation for 38 hour, glucose was the sole carbon source leading to rapid growth. After cell growth stopped, the maltose and glucose concentrations increased due to degradation of maltotriose and maltotetraose, but glucose level was maintained at around 3.0%. After 70 hour fermentation, maltose slowly converted to glucose, and vancomycin production continued during the period.
This study was conducted to investigated the changes in the nutrient components ($NO_3{^-}-N$, $NH_4{^+}-N$, $PO_4{^{3-}}P$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$) and environmental parameters (electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and pH) on the leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown with hydroponics. Recirculating hydroponic cultivation system was consisted of planting port, LED lamp, water tank, and circulating pump for hydroponic. Nutrient solution was used in the standard solution for Japan vegetables experimental station and commercial hydroponic. The result showed that electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS) and pH, depending on the growth of lettuce decreased continuously. With the growth of the lettuce, nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, phosphate phosphorus were required for periodic replacement. The number of pH compensation due to the growth of lettuce are the most high. The concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ during the lettuce growth showed no significant change. However, $K^+$ concentration increased due to the replacement with nitrogen and phosphorus. Electric conductivity and total dissolved solids with total nutrient concentration showed the linear relationship and the correlation coefficient $R^2$ were 0.8601 and the 0.827, respectively.
This study reports the presence of mature and bi-sexual phase gonads in red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara after less than a year of cultivation in a commercial indoor tank and a net cage. In December 2018, juveniles were placed in an indoor tank and cultured for five months. In June 2019, the fish were transferred to a net cage and cultured until September. The rearing temperatures ranged from 19.86℃-24.65℃ in the indoor tank and 21.86℃-27.65℃ in the net cage. During the net cage culture period, specimens were randomly selected for histological gonad examination. The highest gonadosomatic index (GSI) value was measured in July (3.38±2.53), and dramatically decreased in August (0.44±0.21) and September (0.42±0.30). In July, some mature fish showed signs of vitellogenic stage oocyte development (vitellogenic and oil droplet stage oocytes), but immature fish were in an early developmental stage containing peri-nucleolus stage (PNS) oocytes. Bi-sexual phase gonads containing spermatocytes and spermatids were observed in the lumen and several PNS oocytes. By August and September, most specimens showed early-stage ovary development. However, mature testis (in August) and bi-sexual phase gonads (in September) were also observed. These results provide evidence for early puberty and hermaphroditism in the red spotted grouper.

The production of a carotenoid astaxanthin, a growth-associated principal pigment, is limited in a batch cultivation, because a high glucose concentration severely inhibits the cell growth and also influences the carotenoid production. Therefore, a fermentation strategy including effective chemicals for the high-level production of cells and astaxanthin by a mutant strain Phaffia rhodozyma AJ-6-1 was developed in a fed-batch culture. First, a production medium for maximizing the cell and astaxanthin yields was formulated and optimized. Using this optimized medium, the highest cell and astaxanthin concentrations obtained were about 38.25 g/1 and 34.77 mg/1, respectively. In addition, an attempt was made to increase the amount of astaxanthin using effective chemicals such as ethanol and acetic acid, which are known at an inducer and/or precursor of carotenoid synthesis. When either 10g/1 ethanol or 5 g/1 acetic acid was added to investigate the resulting astaxanthin content, a relatively high astaxanthin concentration or 45.62 mg/l and 43.87 mg/1, respectively, was obtained, and the cell concentrations also increased slightly under these conditions. Therefore, these results imply that a fed-batch culture of the mutant strain P. rhodozyma AJ-6-1 could be effectively employed in the commercial production of astaxanthin, although the factors affecting the productivity remain to be elucidated.

Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) cultivars show a gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI) system, like other fruit species of Rosaceae family. Thus, it is necessary to determine their S-genotypes in order for stable fruit set in commercial cultivation. S-genotypes of apricots were determined by PCR and test crosses. Three sets of consensus primers designed from Prunus S-RNases were used to amplify fragments containing the first and second S-RNase intron, respectively. Through the results obtained from the 3 PCRs, we could identify SI genotypes of 33apricot cultivars. Several cultivars such as 'Heiwa', 'Yamagata No.3' and 'Shinsuoomi' had the self-compatible (Sc) allele. Self-pollination tests revealed that cultivars with Sc allele were self-compatible. Cross-pollination tests confirmed that there was cross-incompatibility between the cultivars with the same S-genotypes. These results might be very useful for growers for effective pollination and for breeders using these in cross breeding programs.
