Combustion instability is a common phenomenon in a ducted flame burner and is known as accompanying low frequency oscillation. This is due to the interaction between unsteady heat release rate and sound pressure field, that is, thermoacoustic feedback. In Rayleigh criterion, combustion instability is triggered when the heat additions is in phase with acoustic oscillation. A Rijke type burner with a pre-mixed flame is built for investigating the effect of Reynolds number and equivalence ratio on thermoacoustic oscillation. In addition, the effect of wall temperature is presented. The results suggest that the frequency of max. oscillation is dependent on Reynolds number and equivalence ratio whereas its magnitude is not a strong function of these two parameters. On the other hand, the wall temperature distribution has much strong effects on the oscillation, even creates different mode of acoustic resonance.

Combustion stability rating tests under condition low pressure of a 75-$ton_f$ liquid rocket engine(LRE) thrust chamber were carried out. Mixing head with decreased number of injectors than that of the other but with the same mass flow rate to the combustion chamber showed self-oscillation instability in chamber pressure of 30 bar. The other combustion chamber with increased number of injectors showed that high frequency combustion stability was maintained under condition of same pressure, but self-oscillation instability was generated in chamber pressure of 20 bar which can be considered as stability boundary region of this mixing head.
Usefulness of an optical fiber was demonstrated by detecting the generation of self-excited combustion oscillations. OH chemiluminescence intensity detected by the optical fiber showed mostly excellent agreement with those obtained by high speed CCD camera measurements when combustion oscillations were strong. Symptoms of self-excited combustion oscillation were also studied in order to predict the onset of combustion oscillation before it proceeded to a catastrophic failure. For the purpose, we have found and proposed unique measures to tell the onset of self-excited combustion oscillations based on the careful statistics of fluctuating properties in flames, such as pressure or omission of OH radicals.

A ground hot-firing test(HFT) was accomplished to draw a correlation between the pressure oscillation intensity of combustion chamber and thrust response characteristics in a 70 N-class hydrazine thruster which has been developed recently. Monopropellant grade hydrazine was adopted as a propellant for the HFT, and combustion-chamber characteristic length, propellant injection pressure were applied as test parameters. It was confirmed that the decrease of thrust-chamber diameter and injection pressure augmented the pressure oscillation of stagnation chamber in the test condition specified, and the oscillation hampered the pulse response performance of test models.
Unsteady Shock-Induced Combustion has been studied for the past few decades since it is considered as one of the potential ways to reach supersonic flights. Experimental observations of Unsteady SIC were observed as early as 1960's. But Lehr was the first to report in detail the mechanisms of Shock-Induced Combustion experimentally. Numerical Studies on SIC were helpful in explaining the insight into the oscillatory behaviour in the mid 90's to early 2000's. Detailed reaction mechanisms is required to prediction the SIC flowfield more in detail. However at that time, very few reaction mechanisms on hydrogen-oxidation were reported. In the last decade, various number of hydrogen reaction mechanisms were reported. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyze the effect of various reaction mechanisms in an unsteady mode of Shock-Induced Combustion.

The objective of this study is to investigate on the pulsating combustion of a granular coal in a Rijke type pulse combustor. The combustor is made of a 120cm long pipe with a honeycomb as a fire grate in the lower half. A fixed amount of coal is laid on the honeycomb and burned downward after ignition by using propane gas. Then the combustion driven acoustic oscillation occurs and makes the combustion pulsate with a very high amplitude. The effect of the pulsation and the air flow rate on the combustion characteristics is examined in comparison with the normal combustion. The non-pulsating combustion is made possible by placing absorbing material under the honeycomb. The combustion phenomena are observed visually, the burning time is measured in order to evaluate the combustion rate, and the variation of the gas temperatures is recorded. It is found that the fuel particle is greatly agitated like boiling by the flow pulsation and the burning-down velocity is so fast that the fuel is burned almost simultaneously. The combustion rate can be increased as twice as that of non-pulsating combustion with increase of the air flow rate. And the combustion becomes clean with less soot deposit and emission.

A strong combustion-driven sound from a surface burner made of a perforated metal fiber plate for premixed gas was investigated to clarify the physical mechanism of its generation. A simple model was developed for the acoustic power generation in terms of the heat transfer response function and the acoustic impedance of the burner. The acoustic impedance of the perforated metal fiber placed on the open exit was measured and the heat release response of the burner to the oscillating flow associated with the acoustic disturbance was expressed in terms of a response function. It was found that the power is generated by the heat release in response to the downstream particle velocity, in contrast to the upstream velocity in the case of the Rijke oscillation driven by a heater placed in the lower half of a columm with upstream flow. The measured frequencies of the oscillation were in agreement with the estimated resonance frequencies and their excitation was varied with the combustion conditions. For the same fuel rate, the excited frequency increases with the air ratio if it is low but decreases with the ratio if not so low. Such frequency characteristics were explained by assuming a heat release response function with a time constant and it was shown that the excited frequency decreases as the time constant increases.

An experimental study was carried out in a small-scale test furnace to investigate the performance, such as $NO_X$ emission, enhancement of heat transfer, uniformity of temperature, and etc, of oscillating combustion applied in radiant tube burner system. A premixed type burner and a cyclic oscillating control valve were designed and used. The fuel, used commercial LPG in this study, was only oscillated using the cyclic oscillating control valve. As oscillating combustion was applied in radiant tube burner system, it is found that $NO_X$ emission, compared to no oscillation, could be reduced by 38% at $90{\sim}120rpm\;(1.5{\sim}2.0Hz)$. However, as oscillating frequency was increased, effect of abatement of $NO_X$ emission is gradually reduced. From the measurement of furnace heating time from $100^{\circ}C$ to $720^{\circ}C$, heat transfer is increased by 11.5% at the oscillation of 120rpm. Temperature distribution of radiant tube surface is more uniform at oscillation of 120rpm with decrease of the peak temperature and increase of low temperature. From these results, it is confirmed that oscillating combustion is useful in radiant tube burner system.

A Possibility of combustion instability on longitudinal mode has a high level at large scale of L/D. Solid propellant has a metal particle and a grain of control to pressure oscillation. Solid rocket motor in slotted-tube grain controls pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode. If slot length is shot, pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode is amplified by cylinder part after middle phase of total burn time. A study has analyzed pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode at spectrum and acoustic modal analysis at pressure of result on static firing test.
Experiment is conducted to grasp effects of flame curvature on flame behavior in laminar lifted-jet flames. Nozzle diameters of 0.1 and 1.0mm are used to vary flame curvature of edge flame. There exist three types of edge flame oscillation. These edge flame oscillations may be caused by radial heat loss at all flame conditions, by fuel Lewis numbers near or larger than unity with the help of appreciable radial conduction heat loss, and by buoyancy effects. These are confirmed by the analysis of oscillation frequencies. It is however seen that the change of lift-off height through edge-flame oscillation is mainly due to radial heat loss irrespective of Lewis number and buoyancy.
