  • In this age of convergence, a combinative nature of innovation is in need of revisiting. The innovation based on combination is named "combinative innovation" and defined operationally as the innovation that combines different modes of combinations. Five modes are characterized and the framework is applied to the case of CDMA mobile phone development of Samsung Electronics Company in the 1990s. The case study demonstrates the usefulness of the framework and the future direction of further elaboration of the framework.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to examine multi-modal interaction effects of input-mode switching on the use of smart phones. Background: Multi-modal is considered as an efficient alternative for input and output of information in mobile environments. However, there are various limitations in current mobile UI (User Interface) system that overlooks the transition between different modes or the usability of a combination of multi modal uses. Method: A pre-survey determined five representative tasks from smart phone tasks by their functions. The first experiment involved the use of a uni-mode for five single tasks; the second experiment involved the use of a multi-mode for three dual tasks. The dependent variables were user preference and task completion time. The independent variable in the first experiment was the type of modes (i.e., Touch, Pen, or Voice) while the variable in the second experiment was the type of tasks (i.e., internet searching, subway map, memo, gallery, and application store). Results: In the first experiment, there was no difference between the uses of pen and touch devices. However, a specific mode type was preferred depending on the functional characteristics of the tasks. In the second experiment, analysis of results showed that user preference depended on the order and combination of modes. Even with the transition of modes, users preferred the use of multi-modes including voice. Conclusion: The order of combination of modes may affect the usability of multi-modes. Therefore, when designing a multi-modal system, the fact that there are frequent transitions between various mobile contents in different modes should be properly considered. Application: It may be utilized as a user-centered design guideline for mobile multi modal UI system.

  • In the dynamic analysis of a mechanism, if one or more of the components are flexible, then the simulation will not be accurate because of the violation of the rigid body assumption. Mode shapes are used to represent the dynamic behavior of an elastic structure. A modal synthesis method which uses a combination of normal modes, constraint modes, and attachment modes, was used to represent effectively the elastic deformation of a flexible multibody. Since the combination of these modes should be different for each type of connecting part, the modal synthesis method was studied for the various types of interconnecting joints. In addition, the analysis procedure for the flexible body was explained. A satellite system with flexible solar panels was chosen as an example to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This study investigated the relation between parents' verbal control modes and children's maladjustment. The subjects were 445 mothers and their children of sixth grade in elementary schools located in Seoul. To assess the parents' verbal control modes, questionnaire developed by Lee Kyung Hee(1993) was used. The modified version of Achenbach and Edelbrock's CBCL(Child Behavior Checklist) was administered to assess the children's maladjustment. The results were as follows : 1)Significant differences were found in parents' verbal control modes in terms of children's sex difference and social status level. 2) Significant differences were found in children's maladjustment in terms of children's sex difference and social status level. 3) There was a significant correlation between father's verbal control modes and children's maladjustment. Children's maladjustment was related positively to imperative mode and negatively to the person-oriented and position-oriented modes. The best variable explaining girl's maladjustment was father's position-oriented modes. 4) The negative impact of father's imperative mode in combination with the mother's imperative mode on the children's adjustment was greater than other combinations of the father and mother's verbal control modes.

  • An analytical study is presented on the hydroelastic vibration of two rectangular identical plates coupled with a bounded fluid by using the finite Fourier series expansion method. It is observed that the two contrastive modes, the so called the out-of-phase and in-phase modes appear. The proposed analytical method is verified by observing a good agreement to three dimensional finite element analysis results. All natural frequency of the in-phase modes can be predicted well by the combination of the dry beam modes. The theoretical prediction for the out-of-phase mode can be improved by using the polynomial functions satisfying the plate boundary conditions and fluid volume conservation instead of using dry beam modes.

  • Combination of the parametric and the wavelet analyses of acoustic emission (AE) signals was applied to identify the failure modes in carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite laminates during tensile testing. AE signals detected by surface mounted lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensors were analyzed by parametric analysis based on the time of occurrence which classifies AE signals corresponding to failure modes. The frequency band level-energy analysis can distinguish the dominant frequency band for each failure mode. It was observed that the same type of failure mechanism produced signals with different characteristics depending on the stacking sequences and the type of sensors. This indicates that the proposed method can identify the failure modes of the signals if the stacking sequences and the sensors used are known.

  • The present study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between parent's verbal control modes and children's social competency. Two questionanires were developed by the authors for this study. The questionnaire for measuring parent's verbal control modes was composed of 84 and 87 items for mother and father, respectively, which assesses three types of verbal control modes; imperative control position-oriented control and person-oriented control. The questionnaire for measuring children's social competency perceived by mothers was composed of 27 items, which assesses four areas of social competency; initiative sociability responsibility and self-disclosure. the subjects of this study were 436 mothers and their children of fifth and sixth grade in elementary schools located in Seoul. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Parents control their children mostly by position-oriented mode and least by imperative mode. 2) There were significant correlations between father's verbal control mode and children's social competency. children's social competency was related positively to the person-oriented and position-oriented modes but negatively to the imperative mode. The best variables explaining boy's social competency were father's imperative and position-oriented modes whereas that for girl's was position oriented mode. 3) Mother's verbal control mode was not significant in explaining children's social competency. 4) The negative impact of father's imperative mode in combination with the mother's person-oriented mode on the children's social competency was greater than other combinations of father's and mother's verbal control modes.

  • For an efficient calculation of scattering matrix in mode matching techniques, mode combination has been studied in this paper. A conducting post in rectangular waveguide, which is most commonly utilized in the combline filter structure, is adopted and its scattering matrix is derived. We eliminates the TE and TM modes having little influence on result, which results in the different number of TE and TM modes in each discontinuous region.

  • Friction forces of piston rings for a typical SI engine were independently measured while excluding the effects of cylinder pressure, oil starvation and piston secondary motion using a floating liner system. Friction patterns, represented by the measured friction forces, were classified into five frictional modes with regard to the combination of predominant lubrication regimes(boundary, mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication) and stroke regions(mid-stroke and dead centers). The modes were identified on the Stribeck diagram of the dimensionless bearing parameter and friction coefficients which were evaluated at the mid-stroke and at the dead centers. And the frictional modes were estimated to the full operation range. The compression rings behave in the mode where hydrodynamic lubrication is dominant at the mid-stroke and mixed lubrication is dominant at the dead centers under steady operating conditions. However, the oil control ring behave in the mode where mixed lubrication is dominant throughout the entire stroke.
