Cu-brazed layer between the sintered-cam(Fe-5Cr-lMo-0.5P-2.5C, wt%) and seamless steelpipe(0.25-0.35C, 0.3-1.0 Mn, bal Fe, wt%) in the camshaft shows a columnar structure of $\gamma$-phase growing from the steel pipe. Liquid phase sintered 60Fe-40Cu alloys are carburized to simulate the brazing process giving rise to the columnar growth. Liquid film migrations and columnar growth of $\gamma$-grains are observed in the carburized regions. The $\gamma$-grains grow in the same direction as the C-diffusion. Fe-solubility in the liquid of carburized region is higher than in the uncarburized by about 0.3 at%. The columnar growth is driven by the gradient of the supersaturated Fe-solute in the liquid between two adjacent $\gamma$-grains.

Generally the solidified microstructures of materials consist of the columnar and equiaxed dendritic regions, and many theoretical studies about columnar-to-equiaxed transition have been done because that is closely related to the mechanical and physical properties of products. In this study, the modified equation based on the Hunt's analytical columnar-to-equiaxed transition condition which was derived from heterogeneous nucleation and grain growth in front of the columnar dendrite tip under directional solidification, was obtained applying the growth-velocity-dependent distribution coefficient and liquidus slope to Hunt's. The effects of the number of nucleation sites, nucleation temperature, alloy composition, growth velocity and liquid temperature gradient on the transition for Al-Cu alloys have been investigated.

AlN crystals were grown by a sublimation process without seed crystals and the growth morphology of them was characterized. The grown AlN crystals were a polycrystalline phase, which had a diameter of $60\sim200\;{\mu}m$ and were grown with a growth rate of $0.2\sim0.5\;{\mu}n/hr$. It was observed that the as-grown crystals had a hexagonal crystal structure and revealed that these crystals were grown with a morphology of columnar morphology in the initial stage of the growth before they were enlarged in a way of a lateral growth behavior in the final stage. On the surface, a lot of pinholes were observed on the surface of crystals grown. The evolution of a growth morphology was characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopic observation.
We proposed a novel method to evaluate the magnetic properties of the initial layer and the columnar structure separately for CoCr-based perpendicular recording media. We show that the thickness of the initial layer and the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of columnar structure can be quantitatively evaluated using the plotted product of perpendicular anisotropy to magnetic film thickness versus magnetic film thickness ($K_{u{\bot}}^{ex{p.}}$$\times$ d$_{mag.}$ vs. d$_{mag.}$ plot). Based on the analyses, it is found that: (1) compared with CoCrPtTa media, CoCrPtB media have relatively thin initial layer, and have fine grains with homogeneous columnar structure with c-plane crystallographic orientation; (2) CoCrPtB media can be grown epitaxially on Ru or CoCr/C intermediate layer, and as the result, the magnetic properties of the media within thin thickness region of d$_{mag.}$$\leq$ 20 nm is significantly improved; (3) the key issue of material investigation for CoCr-based perpendicular recording media will be focused on how to fabricate c-plane-oriented columnar grains well isolated with nonmagnetic substance in epitaxial-growth media, while maintaining the thermal stability of the media.

We have investigated the deposition characteristics of (Ni0.8Fe0.2)20Ag80 thin films as a function of chamber pressure and nitrogen flow rate with scanning electron microscopy(SEM), atomic force microscopy(AFM), XRD and $\alpha$-step. The deposition rate of these film is decreased with increasing the chamber pressure and the nitrogen flow rate. With raising the chamber pressure, the growth mode of thin film is changed from island growth to columnar one, which is probably due to energy of atom. Contrary, the nitrogen flow rate is raised, growth mode is changed from columnar to island one. According to the XRD patterns, the preferred orientation is inhibited as the nitrogen flow rate is kept above 10 sccm, but that is nearly independent on the chamber pressure. When the chamber pressure decrease or the nitrogen flow rate increase, phase separation into permoally and silver is occured.

The most important part of the fabrication solar cells is the anti-reflection coating when excludes the kinds of silicon substrates (crystalline, polycrystalline, or amorphous), patterns and materials of electrodes. Anti-reflection coatings reduce the reflection of sunlight and at last increase the intensity of radiation to inside of solar cells. So, we can obtain increase of solar cell efficiency about 10% using anti-reflection coating. There are many kinds of anti-reflection film for solar cell, such as SiN, $SiO_2$, a-Si, and so on. And, they have two functions, anti-reflection and passivation. However such materials could not perfectly prevent reflection. So, in this work, we investigated the anti-reflection coating with the columnar structure ZnO thin film. We synthesized columnar structure ZnO film on glass substrates. The ZnO films were synthesized using a RF magnetron sputtering system with a pure (99.95%) ZnO target at room temperature. The anti-reflection coating layer was sputtered by argon and oxygen gases. The angle of target and substrate measures 0, 20, 40, 60 degrees, the working pressure 10 mtorr and the 250 W of RF power during 40 minutes. The confirm the growth mechanism of ZnO on columnar structure, the anti-reflection coating layer was observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The optical trends were observed by UV-vis and Elleso meter.

Vacuum brazing is the most modern brazing process and is at present, far from being completely understood. By brazing under high vacuum, in an atmosphere free of oxidizing gases, a superior product with greater strength, ductility and uniformity can be obtained. In this study, the influence of brazing parameters such as base metal characteristics, joint clearance and brazing time were described in relation to the metallurgical phenomena and shear strength of vacuum-brazed joints between carbon steels and 304 stainless steel (SUS 304) brazed by copper filler metal. In copper brazing of SUS 304 to a medium carbon steel(M.C.S) the columnar Fe-Cr-Ni-Cu-C alloy structure was formed and grew from the M.C.S side and at the same time, the surface of M.C.S. was decarbonized. The driving force for the formation and growth of columnar structure was the difference of carbon content between base metals. As the joint clearance is narrower and brazing time is longer, the formation and growth of columnar phase and decarburization of carbon steels were more noticeable. Because of decarburization of carbon steels, the shear strength of brazed joints were reduced as the formation of columnar structure was increased.
The work was conducted with tole purpose of investigation on the development pattern of epididymis in accordance with the growth of meat-type cockerels. 1. Histological features of various ductules in epididymis of the cockerel on the age of weeks were as follow: within 10 weeks after hatching rete testis and connecting ductules were well developed but efferent ductules were observed in immature form. During 10th to 20th week, the lining epithelium of various ductules in epididymis was in the developing stage near to the mature form. From 21th week, various ductules were abruptly matured. Lumen of rete testis was lined by simple squamous or simple columnar epithelial cells and that of efferent ductules, having many folds and being larger than any others, were lined by ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with ciliated columnar cells, clear cells and basal cells were noted. Luminal epithelium of connecting ductules was composed of ciliated low pseudostratified columnar epithelial cells, ciliated columnar cells, clear cells and basal cells. The luminal surface of epididymal ducts was pseudostratified columnar epithelium and which was composed of high columnar cells and basal cells. 2. In the India ink absorption test, India ink granules were noted above the nucleus of some cells in the efferent ductules and the connecting ductules at 7 hours after administration of India ink to the mature epididymis, but not absorbed in the other ductules. The granules reactive to acid phosphatase were most abundant in some epithelial cells of efferent ductules and connecting ductules, especially above the nucleus of cells. The granules reactive to alkaline phosphatase were noted on the luminal border of efferent ductules. The granules reactive to PAS were scattered in the epithelial cells of efferent ductules and connecting ductules.
For Pb-20wt%Cu alloys, severe macrosegregation due to density difference of the resulting phases in normal directional solidification has been minimized and a uniformly aligned dendritic structure has been produced by axially rotating the sample of 5mm diameter in conjunction with horizontal directional solidification. Under the constant growth velocity of $20{\mu}m/sec$, increasing the rotation rate from 0.18 to 12rpm results in a transition from an aligned columnar to an equiaxed Cu-dendritic structure. With a constant rotation rate of 0.18rpm, increasing the growth velocity from 10 to $50{\mu}m/sec$ also has promoted a transition from columnar to equiaxed structure.

The effects of the deposition temperature on the growth characteristics of the ZnO films were studied for film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) device applications. All films were deposited using a radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering technique. It was found that the growth characteristics of the ZnO films have a strong dependence on the deposition temperature from 25 to $350^{\circ}C$. The ZnO films deposited below $200^{\circ}C$ exhibited reasonably good columnar grain structures with a highly preferred c-axis orientation while those above 200°C showed very poor columnar grain structures with a mixed-axis orientation. This study seems very useful for the future FBAR device applications.
