  • The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of inorganic pigments on the physical properties of cement mortar. For this purpose, the compressive strength and absorption test were carried out on cement mortar imxed with inorganic pigments by changing the proportion of cement mortar, water-cement ratio, and ratio of pigment. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: the compressive strength of colored mortar rapidely increased in red and yellow mortar, as the mix ratio of pigment increased. In case of green and black mortar, however, the compressive strength decresed as the mix ratio incresed. In case of red and yellow mortar, the absorption of colored mortar increased as the mixing ratio increased, if the mean particle diameter of the pigment is small. In case of green and black mortar, the absorption ratio decreased as the mix ratio increased. After investigating the overall physical properties of colored mortar, it was confirmed that the proper mix ratio of pigment securing the properties of colored mortar was below 6% of the weight of the cement to be used.

  • Since inorganic pigment, among admixtures used for cement composites, can raise the esthetic value of a building due to its effect of coloring, it can be assumed that the quantity consumed is expected to increase in connection with the recent trend of emphasizing the beautiful sights of the city. We carried out a flow test by changing the mix proportion of the cement mortar mixed with an inorganic pigment, water-cement ratio and pigment mixing ratio in order to present the basic materials for utilizing colored cement mortars. In construction by exploring the effect of inorganic pigments on the workability of cement mortar. In case of red pigment mortar and yellow pigment mortar, the workability was found to be rapidly decreased. To secure proper workability, it is necessary to increase the amount of mixing water, or to use superplasticizer. In case of green pigment mortar, however, it recorded $-2.4{\~}6.9{\%}$, showing that there was almost no change in flow. In case of black pigment mortar, it was also confirmed that there is no need to consider workability.

  • Even though concrete is the most important material for building structures, its intrinsic gray color degrades urban esthetics. In order to improve this problem, coloring methods of mixing pigment in concrete batch and painting the surface of concrete surface have been tried. However, applications of the coloring methods in construction field are difficult due to high cost and low durability. Recently, acid stain agent is emerging as a new coloring method for concrete. It is able to apply a remarkably thin colored layer on a concrete surface from chemical reaction between acid and alkaline solutions. This study has examined the changes and variations of the surface layer of mortar specimen from chemical reaction of acid stained agents. The colors were changed into natural irregular stains according to aging. After the staining, no shape change was found from visible inspections. Microstructure of the colored surface applied with acid stained agent was much rougher than that of original mortar. When the colored layer was compared to original surface, crystals of hydrate such as $Ca(OH)_2$ and C-S-H gel were observed. Surface hardness was same or slightly higher in the colored layer. The value of pH was reduced by approximately 10%, weight contents of elements such as Ca, Si, and Al were low. In the chemical composition of the colored layer, the non-cement based elements of Mn, Cr, and Cu increased. Also, Fe and alkali elements of K and Na increased.

  • The Christian Museum of Gongju Jeil Church was first built in 1931 and was largely damaged during the Korean War, but the walls and chimneys have been preserved. This building has a high architectural values in that the chapel was reconstructed in 1956, and maintains its original form through repair of damaged parts rather than new construction. The stained glass windows were as installed in 1979 and has a great significance in the Dalle de Verre method using lump glass. However, some of the stained glass damaged partially, such as various cracks and splits, and vertical and horizontal cracks in the joint fillers of supporting the colored glass. As the structural materials of the stained glass window, an iron frame and cement mortar filled with it were used, and corrosion of iron, cracking of mortar and granular decomposition appear partially due to weathering. In the joint fillers, the content of Ca and S is very high, indicating that gypsum were used as admixtures, and the gypsums grow in a rhombohedral and forms a bundle, which is investigated to have undergone recrystallization. As a result of modeling the ultrasonic velocity at the joint fillers, the left and right windows at the entrance show relatively weak in the range of 800 to 1,600m/s, and the lower right corner of the altar window and the upper left corner of the center window were also 1,000 to 1,800m/s, showing relatively low physical properties. And gypsums produced during the neutralization of lime mortar were detected in the joint fillers and contaminants on the surface. Such salts may cause damage to the joint material due to freezing and thawing, so appropriate preventive conservation is required. Also, since various damage types are complexly appearing in stained glass window and joint filler, customized conservation treatment should be reviewed through clinical tests.

  • We checked the conditions and material properties after producing the lime finishing layers with a mortar mix of processed lime. In addition, we reproduced the lime finishing layers of the Koguryo Tomb Murals, colored the layers with a few different techniques and identified the characteristics for each painting technique. As a result of the experiment, we could infer the producing techniques as well as teaming the conditions and properties of the lime finishing layers of the Koguryo tomb murals, and examined the maintenance of the lime finishing layers. Of those samples produced under various conditions, the layers of slaked lime, which were obtained after being hydrated underground for a long time, showed quite a good condition. Thus the slaked lime mixes produced through particular hydration methods are judged to increase the maintenance of the lime finishing layers of the Koguryo Tomb Murals. Mostly, the paints of Koguryo Tomb Murals indicated that they have similar conditions with the samples produced with a secco method. In addition, Considering the compositional forms of the painting layers and the boundary layers which formed between the painting layers and the finishing layers, we can verify that, in some cases, the conditions of the painting layers of the Koguryo tomb murals are similar to those which were produced with a combination of fresco and secco.

  • The host rocks of brick-shaped stone pagoda in the Bunhwangsa temple are lots of kinds andesitic rocks, which has gone through mechanical and chemical weathering. As the overall observation, the pagoda is serious damages by air pollutants, and the northeast parts show the much advanced state of turning white, while the southeast parts are heavily cracked in the materials. The rocks of brick-shaped pagoda body are in a relatively stable condition of weathering and damage except for the abrasion and cracks of the corners. The rocks of the pagoda roof suffer from more symptoms including multiple peel-offs, exfoliation, cracks forming round lines, and falling off stone pieces. The pagoda roof rocks are dominated by the thriving leafy lichens and mosses, especially, there are higher plants (selaginella involvens, dandelions) taking root actively between the brick stones and content mortar. There are even light gray precipitates like stalactites between the rocks of the body, In particular, the 1st and 2nd floor in the east side and the body parts in the north side are the most serious. Their major minerals are calcite, gypsum and clay minerals. The rocks of the stylobate and the tabernacle in all the four directions are composed mainly of granitic rocks. The materials consisting of the tabernacles show the severe splits and distortion, which causes the structural instability. The stylobate rocks are heavily contaminated by some weeds with the often marks of inorganic contamination by secondary hydroxides. The central part of the east stylobate has been sinking, while that of the 1st floor west stylobate is protruded nesting a line of cracks. Accordingly, the inside of the tabernacle is always humid with the constant introduction of rainwater. The stone lion standing in the southeast and northeast side are alkali granite, while that in the southwest and northwest lithic tuff. Each of the stone lion also coated with various colored lichens, mosses, algae, bacteria and bryophyte. The external materials of the pagoda have deteriorated the functions of the rocks and made the loss, falling off, and biological contamination even worse due to the surface weathering. Thus it's urgent to come up with scientific restoration and conservation measures through clinical tests.
