Semantic Image Retrieval Using Color Distribution and Similarity Measurement in WordNet (컬러 분포와 WordNet상의 유사도 측정을 이용한 의미적 이미지 검색)

  • Semantic interpretation of image is incomplete without some mechanism for understanding semantic content that is not directly visible. For this reason, human assisted content-annotation through natural language is an attachment of textual description to image. However, keyword-based retrieval is in the level of syntactic pattern matching. In other words, dissimilarity computation among terms is usually done by using string matching not concept matching. In this paper, we propose a method for computerized semantic similarity calculation In WordNet space. We consider the edge, depth, link type and density as well as existence of common ancestors. Also, we have introduced method that applied similarity measurement on semantic image retrieval. To combine wi#h the low level features, we use the spatial color distribution model. When tested on a image set of Microsoft's 'Design Gallery Line', proposed method outperforms other approach.

Automatic Extraction of Major Object in the Image based on Image Composition (영상구도에 근거한 영상내의 주요객체 자동추출 기법)

  • A new algorithm for automatic extraction of interesting objects is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm can be summarized in two steps. First, segmentation of color image that split interesting objects and backgrounds is performed. According to the research stating, 'Humans perceive things by contracting color into three to four essential colors,' a color image is segmented into three regions utilizing k-mean algorithm, followed by annexing the regions when the similarities of them exceeds the critical value based on the calculation of degrees in the histogram similarity, Second, identifying the interesting objects out of the segmented image, partitioned by the image composition theory, is performed. To have a good picture, it is important to adjust positions of interesting objects according to picture composition. Extracting objects is a retro-deduction process using a weighted mask designed upon the triangular composition of picture. To prove the quality of the proposed method, experiments are performed over four hundreds images as well as comparison with recently proposed KMCC and GBIS methods.

A Reproduction algorithm of nighttime road-image for visibility evaluation of headlamps (헤드램프의 시계성 평가를 위한 야간도로 영상 재현 알고리즘)

  • This study proposes a new calculation method for generating real nighttime lamp-lit images. In order to improve the color appearance in the prediction of a nighttime lamp-lighted scene, the lamp-lit image is synthesized based on spectral distribution using the estimated local spectral distribution of the headlamps and the surface reflectance of every object. The Principal component analysis method is introduced to estimate the surface color of an object, and the local spectral distribution of the headlamps is calculated based on the illuminance data and spectral distribution of the illuminating headlamps. HID and halogen lamps are utilized to create beam patterns and captured road scenes are used as background images to simulate actual headlamp-lit images on a monitor. As a result, the reproduced images presented a color appearance that was very close to a real nighttime road image illuminated by single and multiple headlamps compared to the conventional graphic-based algorithm.

Development of a Risk Communication Material on Artificial Food Color Additives for Elementary School Students (초등학생을 위한 인공식용색소 정보전달 교육매체 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a risk communication material on artificial food color additives for elementary school students. The development was based on a previous study on the perception and information needs of elementary school students on artificial food colors including that the students usually were interested in artificial food colors, but didn't know about those well, and they wanted to get information on the safety of their intake, function and necessity of food color additives. Based on the above results, a comic book on artificial food colors was developed as a risk communication material for the elementary school students by brainstorming and consultation with experts. The book was titled as 'Variegated artificial food colors! Understanding and Eating'. It contained basic information on food additives focused on artificial food colors including definition, function, calculation of ADI, usage of artificial food colors, quizzes and useful web sites, etc. The results of field evaluation for the developed material by 101 elementary school students were very positive in getting the correct information, understanding artificial food colors and having proper attitude for healthy dietary life. Therefore, the developed material could be used to help elementary school students have proper perception on artificial food colors and facilitate the risk communication on food additives.

  • In this paper, we propose a criteria which can be applied to classify conventional color feature based Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) methods with its application areas, and a new image retrieval method which can represent sufficient spatial information in the image and is powerful in invariant searching to translation, rotation and enlargement transform. As the conventional color feature based CBIR methods can not sufficiently include the spatial information in the image, in general, they have drawbacks, which are weak to the translation or rotation, enlargement transform. To solve it, they have represented the spatial information by partitioning the image. Retrieval efficiency, however, is decreased rapidly as increasing the number of the feature vectors. We classify conventional methods to ones using 1st order relations and ones using 2nd order relations as their color object relation, and propose a new method using 3rd order relation of color objects which is good for the translation, rotation and enlargement transform. It makes quantized 24 buckets and selects 3 high scored histogram buckets and calculates 3 mean positions of pixels in 3 buckets and 3 angles. Then, it uses them as feature vectors of a given image. Experiments show that the proposed method is especially good at enlarged images and effective for its small calculation.

  • Processes for optimizing the coil shape of deflection yoke are proposed A very accurate and practical winding modeler is developed and volume integral equation method (VIEM) is used for field calculation. Two steps of optimizations are done by using (1+1) evolution strategy. Those are dimensional optimization and pin-position optimization Various techniques are applied for reducing computational time for the optimization.

A Gaussian Mixture Model for Binarization of Natural Scene Text

  • Recently, due to the increase of the use of scanned images, the text segmentation techniques, which play critical role to optimize the quality of the scanned images, are required to be updated and advanced. In this study, an algorithm has been developed based on the modification of Gaussian mixture model (GMM) by integrating the calculation of Gaussian detection gradient and the estimation of the number clusters. The experimental results show an efficient method for text segmentation in natural scenes such as storefronts, street signs, scanned journals and newspapers at different size, shape or color of texts in condition of lighting changes and complex background. These indicate that our model algorithm and research approach can address various issues, which are still limitations of other senior algorithms and methods.

Fog Rendering Using Distance-Altitude Scattering Model on 2D Images

  • We present a fog generation algorithm in 2D images. The proposed algorithm provides a scattering model for the approximated calculation of fog density. The scattering model needs parameters of distance and altitude information. However, 2D images do not include that information, so that we calculate them from the depth information generated in an interactive manner, and estimate the scattering factor by using the scattering model. Then we generate fog effect on an input image using the scattering factor by distance-oriented selection blur and color blending. With the algorithm, we can easily create the fog-effected images and fog generated animation from 2D images.

Retardation of Degradation in Accelerated Aging of Cotton Cellulose Using Borohydride Reduction

  • Degradation of cellulose during prolonged exposure in atmospheric conditions has been recognized as one of main problems in preserving cellulose-made products. The purpose of this research was therefore to study effects of borohydride reduction in improving both the color and strength retention of cotton fabrics artificially aged at temperatures ranging from $100^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$. Results indicated that the fabrics treated with either sodium or tetramethylammonium borohydrides (TMA) were degraded at rates about one-half that of water-washed cotton. These results were consistent over the temperature range. Calculation of the activation energy (Ea) by different methods showed $Ea\;=\;25.5{\pm}\;1.5\;Kcal$, in keeping with measurements made by others at lower temperatures. The TMA-treatment was effective in minimizing discoloration of the fabrics with pre-baking, but not of the un-prebaked fabrics.

  • A highly selective colorimetric chemosensor for $Hg^{2+}$ based on the semisquaraine(BSQ) containing benzothiazole moiety was investigated. BSQ showed color change only with $Hg^{2+}$ but it showed no significant changes upon addition of other metal ions such as $Ca^{2+},\;Pb^{2+},\;Al^{3+},\;Ce^{2+},\;Ba^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Cd^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;and\;Mg^{2+}$. $Hg^{2+}$ ions coordinated to the BSQ forming 1:1 complex. The experimental data and conclusions are rationalized by $DMol^3$ calculation results.
