Objective : Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is commonly used surgical procedure for cervical degenerative disease. Among the various intervertebral spacers, the use of allografts is increasing due to its advantages such as no harvest site complications and low rate of subsidence. Although subsidence is a rare complication, graft collapse is often observed in the follow-up period. Graft collapse is defined as a significant graft height loss without subsidence, which can lead to clinical deterioration due to foraminal re-stenosis or segmental kyphosis. However, studies about the collapse of allografts are very limited. In this study, we evaluated risk factors associated with graft collapse. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed 33 patients who underwent two level ACDF with anterior plating using allogenous bone graft from January 2013 to June 2017. Various factors related to cervical sagittal alignment were measured preoperatively (PRE), postoperatively (POST), and last follow-up. The collapse was defined as the ratio of decrement from POST disc height to follow-up disc height. We also defined significant collapses as disc heights that were decreased by 30% or more after surgery. The intraoperative distraction was defined as the ratio of increment from PRE disc height to POST disc height. Results : The subsidence rate was 4.5% and graft collapse rate was 28.8%. The pseudarthrosis rate was 16.7% and there was no association between pseudarthrosis and graft collapse. Among the collapse-related risk factors, pre-operative segmental angle (p=0.047) and intra-operative distraction (p=0.003) were significantly related to allograft collapse. The cut-off value of intraoperative distraction ${\geq}37.3%$ was significantly associated with collapse (p=0.009; odds ratio, 4.622; 95% confidence interval, 1.470-14.531). The average time of events were as follows: collapse, $5.8{\pm}5.7months$; subsidence, $0.99{\pm}0.50months$; and instrument failure, $9.13{\pm}0.50months$. Conclusion : We experienced a higher frequency rate of collapse than subsidence in ACDF using an allograft. Of the various preoperative factors, intra-operative distraction was the most predictable factor of the allograft collapse. This was especially true when the intraoperative distraction was more than 37%, in which case the occurrence of graft collapse increased 4.6 times. We also found that instrument failure occurs only after the allograft collapse.
In underground retreating longwall coal mining, hard roof collapse is one of the most challenging safety problems for mined-out areas. Identifying precursors for hard roof collapse is of great importance for the development of warning systems related to collapse geohazards and ground control. In this case study, the Xinhe mine was chosen because it is a standard mine and the minable coal seam usually lies beneath hard strata. Real-time monitoring of hard roof collapse was performed in longwall face 5301 of the Xinhe mine using support resistance and microseismic (MS) monitoring; five hard roof collapse cases were identified. To reveal the characteristics of MS activity during hard roof collapse development and to identify its precursors, the change in MS parameters, such as MS event rate, energy release, bursting strain energy, b value and the relationships with hard roof collapse, were studied. This research indicates that some MS parameters showed irregularity before hard roof collapse. For the Xinhe coalmine, a substantial decrease in b value and a rapid increase in MS event rate were reliable hard roof collapse precursors. It is suggested that the b value has the highest predictive sensitivity, and the MS event rate has the second highest.
In this study, the endochronic theory was used to investigate the collapse of thick-walled tubes subjected to external pressure and axial tension. The experimental and theoretical findings of Madhavan et al. (1993) for thick-walled tubes of 304 stainless steel subjected to external pressure and axial tension were compared with the endochronic simulation. Collapse envelopes for various diameter-to-thickness tubes under two different pressure-tension loadings were involved. It has been shown that the experimental results were aptly described by the endochronic approach demonstrated from comparison with the theoretical prediction employed by Madhavan et al. (1993). Furthermore, by using the rate-sensitivity function of the intrinsic time measure proposed by Pan and Chern (1997) in the endochronic theory, our theoretical analysis was extended to investigate the viscoplastic collapse of thick-walled tubes subjected to external pressure and axial tension. It was found that the pressure-tension collapse envelopes are strongly influenced by the strain-rate during axial tension. Due to the hardening of the metal tube of 304 stainless steel under a faster strain-rate during uniaxial tension, the size of the tension-collapse envelope increases.
This poster summarizes numerical collapse calculations of non-rotating and rotating singular, isothermal toroids that employed the zeus2d (Norman and Stone 1992) magnetohydrodynamics package. In the non-rotating collapse calculations, it is seen that infall proceeds at a constant rate and magnetically supported, high density pseudo-disks form in the equatorial plane. With rotating clouds, however, toroidal magnetic fields grow as infall proceeds, teaming with angular momentum to slow the inflow to the center and generate outflow.
In this study, in order to measure energy-absorbing charactistics in collapse test of CFRP thin-walled laminates and interpretate the cause of decreasing age when collapse test is carried out under the environments of high temperatures and hygrothermals, the moisture absorbing behavior according to the variety of orientation angel is observed and collapse characteristics is compared with the influence of high temperatures and hygrothermals. Especially, we supposed to clearly understand reationship between collapse characteristics in proportion to the variety of orientation angel and moisture absorbing. The value of the maximum loading, mean loading, rate of energy absorption energy per unit volume and mass in CFRP thin-walled laminates on the high temperatures and hygrothermals is measured lower than under no moisture absorbing. The maximum collapse loading in dynamic impact test is taken measurement lower than in static collapse test regarding compared with collapse characteristics conformity with the variety of the CFRP circular laminates in high temperatures and hygrothermals. But the absorbed energy per unit mass and volume is almost same and the biggest amount of energy is shown in the CFRP circular laminates with orientation angel of 15 .deg.. Therefore, in the case of use to CFRP circular laminates with axisymmetric mode, CFRP thin-walled structal members with orientation angel of 10 .deg. , 15 . deg. are generally useful.
When an agricultural soil dam collapses, the extent of inundation and the rate of diffusion vary depending on where the collapse occurs in the dam body. In this study, a dam collapse scenario was established and a two-dimensional numerical model FLO-2D was used to closely examine the inundation pattern of the downstream residential area according to the dam collapse point. The results were presented as a flood risk map showing the changes and patterns of the extent of inundation spread. The flood level and the time to reach the maximum water level vary depending on the point of collapse, and the inundation of the downstream area proceeds rapidly in the order of the midpoint, left point, and right point collapse. In the left collapse point, the submergence appeared about 0.5 hour slower than the middle point, and the right collapse point appeared about 1 hour slower than the middle point. Since the relative damage pattern is different depending on the dam collapse point, insurance and disaster countermeasures will have to be established differently.
We investigate the driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by including the effect of the expansion and collapse of background medium. The main goal is to quantify the evolution and saturation of the strength and characteristic length scales of magnetic fields in expanding and collapsing media. Our findings are as follows. First, with the expansion and collapse of background medium, the time evolution of the magnetic and kinetic energy densities depends on the nature of forcing as well as the rate of expansion and collapse. Second, at scales close to the energy injection (or driving) scale, the slope of magnetic field power spectrum shallows with expansion but steepens with collapse. Third, various characteristic length scales, relative to the energy injection scale, decrease with expansion but increase with collapse. We discuss the astrophysical implications of our results.

We developed a 'multi-point vibration acceleration method' for accurately predicting the cavitation intensity in pumps. Pressure wave generated by cavitation bubble collapse propagates and causes pump vibration. We measured vibration accelerations at several points on a casing, suction and discharge pipes of centrifugal and mixed-flow pumps. The measured vibration accelerations scattered because the pressure wave damped differently between the bubble collapse location and each sensor. In a conventional method, experimental constants are proposed without evaluating pressure propagation paths, then, the scattered vibration accelerations cause the inaccurate cavitation intensity. In our method, we formulated damping rate, transmittance of the pressure wave, and energy conversion from the pressure wave to the vibration along assumed pressure propagation paths. In the formulation, we theoretically defined a 'pressure propagation coefficient,' which is a correlation coefficient between the vibration acceleration and the bubble collapse pressure. With the pressure propagation coefficient, we can predict the cavitation intensity without experimental constants as proposed in a conventional method. The prediction accuracy of cavitation intensity is improved based on a statistical analysis of the multi-point vibration accelerations. The predicted cavitation intensity was verified with the plastic deformation rate of an aluminum sheet in the cavitation erosion area of the impeller blade. The cavitation intensities were proportional to the measured plastic deformation rates for three kinds of pumps. This suggests that our method is effective for estimating the cavitation intensity in pumps. We can make a cavitation intensity map by conducting this method and varying the flow rate and the net positive suction head (NPSH). The map is useful for avoiding the operating conditions having high risk of cavitation erosion.
Ninety-nine dogs diagnosed as tracheal collapse were reviewed for 2002-2003 year at Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University with clinical records and radiographs. Dogs were ranged in age from 1 to 15 years old (average 8.23 years old) and in weight from 1.2kg to 10.3kg (average 3.3kg). The population included 58 females (6 spayed) and 41 males (8 castrated). It is highly predominant in Yorkshire terrier (64, 64.6%) followed by Pomeranian (10, 10.1 %), Poodle and Chihuahua (8, 8.1%), Maltese (4, 4.0%), mixed breed (3, 3.0%), Cocker Spaniel and Pug (1, 1.0%). The incident rate of female dogs (59%) exhibited relatively higher than that of male dogs (41%). The most prevalent occurrence location was thoracic inlet (60%) of all and carina region (15%), intrathoracic trachea (14%) and cervical trachea (11 %) showed similar rate. Conclusively, tracheal collapse was observed in completely matured or old small breed dogs, largely Yorkshire terrier, on thoracic inlet primarily regardless of gender. These tendencies were apparently similar to previous reports.
