The current trends in steel construction intend to use tapered sections to minimize as much as possible the use of excess material. This can be done by choosing the cross-sections to be as economical as possible, leaving the classical approach of using prismatic members. In addition, it is important to predict the buckling behavior of tapered member with large depth-to-thickness ratio in order to prevent the collapse of PEB system subjected to overloads. An experimental investigation of buckling behavior of tapered beam was presented. The primary test parameter was depth-to-thickness ratio and taper ratio. Using initial stiffness and load-carrying capacity proposed by current provision, the simple plastic hinge method using modified Yoda's model and finite element analysis, the prediction of a moment-rotation curve of linearly tapered member was presented. Moreover, comparisons between analytical and experimental data for moment-rotation curves were accomplished.
Current trends in steel construction include using tapered, non-compact sections to minimize the use of excess material as much as possible by choosing the cross-sections instead of the classical approach of using prismatic members. In addition, snug conditions, especially the end-plate type, have the advantage of incurring less construction costs and shorter assembly times as opposed to full pre-tensioned conditions. On the other hand, it is important to predict the collapse of the PEB system due to over-loading. Large-scale tests of tapered steel portal frames with non-compact sections were conducted. The primary test parameters included the bolt connection method and the loading condition (vertical and horizontal load). The test results on initial stiffness and load capacity were investigated. Furthermore, comparisons between the analytical and experimental data for load-displacement curves were initiated. In addition, we evaluated the applicability of a snug bolt for the PEB frame in the field.
In traditional eccentrically braced steel frames, damages and plastic deformations are limited to the links and the main structure members are required tremendous sizes to ensure elasticity with no damage based on the force-based seismic design method, this limits the practical application of the structure. The high strength steel frames with eccentric braces refer to Q345 (the nominal yield strength is 345 MPa) steel used for links, and Q460 steel utilized for columns and beams in the eccentrically brace steel frames, the application of high strength steels not only brings out better economy and higher strength, but also wider application prospects in seismic fortification zone. Here, the structures with four type eccentric braces are chosen, including K-type, Y-type, D-type and V-type. These four types EBFs have various performances, such as stiffness, bearing capacity, ductility and failure mode. To evaluate the seismic behavior of the high strength steel frames with variable eccentric braces within the similar performance objectives, four types EBFs with 4-storey, 8-storey, 12-storey and 16-storey were designed by performance-based seismic design method. The nonlinear static behavior by pushover analysis and dynamic performance by time history analysis in the SAP2000 software was applied. A total of 11 ground motion records are adopted in the time history analysis. Ground motions representing three seismic hazards: first, elastic behavior in low earthquake hazard level for immediate occupancy, second, inelastic behavior of links in moderate earthquake hazard level for rapid repair, and third, inelastic behavior of the whole structure in very high earthquake hazard level for collapse prevention. The analyses results indicated that all structures have similar failure mode and seismic performance.

Zirconium-doped $Li_{1.1}Co_{1-x}Zr_xO_2(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.05)$ powders as cathode materials for lithium ion batteries were synthesized using an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method. Cyclic voltammetry and cyclic stability tests were performed, and the changes of microstructure were observed. The solubility limit of zirconium into $Li_{1.1}CoO_2$ was less than 5 mol%, and monoclinic $Li_2ZrO_3$ phase was formed above the limit. The Zr-doping suppressed the grain growth and increased the lattice parameters of the hexagonal $LiCoO_2$ phase. The Zr-dopiong of 1mol% resulted in the best cyclic performance in the range of $3.0{\sim}4.3V$ at 1C rate (140 mA/g); the initial discharge capacity decreased from 158 mAh/g to 60 mAh/g in the undoped powder, while from 154 mAh/g to 135 mAh/g in the Zr-doped powder of 1 mol% after 30 cycles. The excellent cycle stability of Zr-doped powder was due to the low polarization during chargedischarge processes which resulted from the delayed collapse of the crystal structure of the active materials with Zr-doping.

Beam-column joints are recognized as the weak points of reinforcement concrete frames. The ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) frames during severe earthquakes can be measured through the dissipation of large energy in beam-column joint. Retrofitting and rehabilitating structures through proper methods, such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), are required to prevent casualties that result from the collapse of earthquake-damaged structures. The main challenge of this issue is identifying the effect of CFRP on the occurrence of failure in the joint of a cross section with normal ductility. The present study evaluates the retrofitting method for a normal ductile beam-column joint using CFRP under monotonic and cyclic loads. Thus, the finite element model of a cross section with normal ductility and made of RC is developed, and CFRP is used to retrofit the joints. This study considers three beam-column joints: one with partial CFRP wrapping, one with full CFRP wrapping, and one with normal ductility. The two cases with partial and full CFRP wrapping in the beam-column joints are used to determine the effect of retrofitting with CFRP wrapping sheets on the behavior of the beam-column joint confined by such sheets. All the models are subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. The final capacity and hysteretic results of the dynamic analysis are investigated. A comparison of the dissipation energy graphs of the three connections shows significant enhancement in the models with partial and full CFRP wrapping. An analysis of the load-displacement curves indicates that the stiffness of the specimens is enhanced by CFRP sheets. However, the models with both partial and full CFRP wrapping exhibited no considerable improvement in terms of energy dissipation and stiffness.

Dynamic loading of structures often causes excursions of stresses will into the inelastic range and the influence of geometry changes on the response is also significant in may cases. In general , the shell structures designed according to quasi-Static analysis may collapse under condition of dynamic loading. Therefore, for a more realistic prediction on the lad carrying capacity of these shell. both material and geometric nonlinear effects should be considered. In this study , the material nonlinearity effect on the dynamic response is formulated by the elasto-viscoplastic model highly corresponding to the real behavior of the material. Also, the geometrically nonlinear behavior is taken into account using a Total Lagrangian formulation. the reinforcing bars are modeled by the equivalent steel layer at the location of reinforcements, and Von Mises yield criteria is adopted for the steel layer behavior. Also, Drucker-Prager yield criteria is applied for the behavior of concrete. the shape imperfection of dome is assumed as 'dimple type' which can be expressed Wd1=Wd0(1-(r-a)m)n while the shape imperfection of wall is assumed as sinusoidal curve which is Wwi =Wwo sin(n $\pi$y/l). In numerical test, three cases of shape imperfection of 0.0 -5.0cm(opposite direction to loading ; inner shape imperfection)and 5cm (direction to loading : outward shape imperfection) and thickness of steel layer determined by steel ratio of 0,3, and 5% were analyzed. The effect of shape imperfection and steel ratio and behavior characteristics of perfect shape shell and imperfect shape shell are identified through analysis of above mentioned numerical test. Dynamic behaviors of dome and wall according toe combination of shape imperfection and steel ratio are also discussed in this paper.
Historical buildings in seismically active regions are severely damaged by earthquakes, since they certainly were not designed by the original builders to withstand seismic effects. In particular the reports after major ground motions indicate that earthquake-induced pounding between buildings may lead to substantial damage or even collapse of colliding structures. The research on structural pounding during earthquakes has been recently much advanced, although most of the studies are conducted on simplified single degree of freedom systems. In this paper a detailed pounding-involved response analysis of three adjacent structures is performed, concerning the main bodies of the "Quinto Orazio Flacco" school. The construction includes a main masonry building, with an M-shaped plan, and a reinforced concrete building, separated from the masonry one and realized along its free perimeter. By the analysis of the capacity curves obtained by suitable pushover procedures performed separately for each building, it emerges that masonry and reinforced concrete buildings are vulnerable to earthquake-induced structural pounding in the longitudinal direction. In particular, due to the geometric configuration of the school, a special case of impact between the reinforced concrete structure and two parts of the masonry building occurs. In order to evaluate the pounding-involved response of three adjacent structures, in this paper a numerical procedure is proposed, programmed using MATLAB software. Both a non-linear viscoelastic model to simulate impact and an elastic-perfectly plastic approximation of the storey shear force-drift relation are assumed, differently from many commercial softwares which admit just one non-linearity.

Recently frequent collapse of old fill dams has taken place, which increases social awareness in the safety of the infrastructure. Fill dams in Korea has been incautiously regarded as safe once the fill dam is considered to have a full capacity to retain a conservative design flood determined by government authorities. However, developed foreign countries has been managing their fill dams by introducing systematic risk assessment techniques over a long period of time. In this study, the system response probabilities of the deteriorated old fill dams in Korea were systematically evaluated and analyzed by using the internal erosion toolbox based on the event tree analysis technique. The probability of the existence of flaw and the magnitude of the hydraulic gradient through a potential crack can significantly influence the geotechnical system response probability. The results of this study show that the probability of the existence of flaw and the magnitude of the hydraulic gradient through a potential crack can significantly influence the geotechnical system response probability and the risk of the deteriorated fill dam can be quantitatively assessed.

For permanent anchors used for slope reinforcement, bearing capacity and durability should be secured during the period of use. However, according to recent domestic and foreign studies, phenomena such as tension fractures, damage to anchorages, deformation and damage to slope and reduction of residual load over time have been reported along the long-term behavior of the anchors. These problems are expected to increase in the future, which will inevitably lead to problems such as increasing maintenance costs and relevant facility collapse. It is necessary to improve maintenance procedures and methods of ground anchors more practically. In this study, the problems and limitations of domestic maintenance methods were analyzed by conducting a literature study, and the measurement data of load cells installed on the install ground anchors were analyzed to determine the change in the residual load with regard to the elapsed date of the anchors. Based on the results, the effect of the construction conditions of anchors and the soil compositions on the increase and decrease of load were identified.

In the early design stage of ships, the two most important structural analyses are performed to identify the structural capacity and safety. The first step is called global strength analysis (longitudinal strength analysis or hull girder strength analysis) and the second step is local buckling analysis (stiffened panel strength analysis). This paper deals with the ultimate strength performance of Arctic Sea Route-going commercial ships considering the effect of low temperature. In this study, two types of structural analyses are performed in Arctic sea conditions. Three types of ship namely oil tanker, bulk carrier and container ship with four different sizes (in total 12 vessels) are tested in four low temperatures (-20, -40, -60 and $-800^{\circ}C$), which are based on the Arctic environment and room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$). The ultimate strength performance is analysed with ALPS/HULL progressive hull collapse analysis code for ship hulls, then ALPS/ULSAP supersize finite element method for stiffened panels. The obtained results are summarised in terms of temperature, vessel type, vessel size, loading type and other effects. The important insights and outcomes are documented.
