  • Manufacturing companies should perform process planning and its evaluation concurrently with new product developments so that they can be highly competitive in the modern market. Process planners should make decisions in the manner of concurrent and collaborative engineering in order to reduce the manufacturing preparation time and cost when developing new products. Automated generation of analysis models from the integrated database, which contains process and material information, reduces time to prepare analyses and makes the models reliable. In this research, we developed a web-based system for concurrent and collaborative system for production flow analysis, using web, database, and simulation technology. An integrated database is designed to automatically generate analysis models from process and material plans without reworking the data. This system enables process planners to evaluate their decision fast and share their opinions with others easily. With this system, it is possible to save time and cost for assembly process and material planning, and reliability of process plans can be improved

  • In e-business environment, business processes inevitably get more entangled and entail collaboration between distributed and heterogeneous platforms that are not easy to manage. Therefore, systematic and automated management of business process execution has drawn a great concern among companies that necessitate collaborative business processes. The concept of workflow inheritance enables abstraction, polymorphism and reusability of processes, and therefore contributes to extending and executing the processes effectively. We analyze various types of interoperation between business processes, and identify 6 primitive interoperability patterns. We propose a method for extensible collaborative process composition using workflow inheritance and provide collaborative workflow between business processes using web services.

  • A business process is classified into two processes; the private process which is implemented within an enterprise and the public process which is implemented between enterprises. The public process commonly used for B2B e-business is defined as a collaborative business process. To date, the collaborative business process has been studied in various aspects. We have categorized the research trends into two viewpoints, i.e., EAI(Enterprise Application Integration) and B2Bi (business to business Integration). In this paper, research trends in inter-organizational workflow are analyzed from the EAI point of view, and research trends in message-based business process and transactions from the B2Bi point of view.

  • To ensure competitiveness in the modern automotive market, process planning should be performed concurrently with new car developments. In automotive general assembly shops, thus, new business workflows and supporting environments are inevitable to reduce the manufacturing preparation time in developing a new car in the manner of concurrent and collaborative engineering. Since complete process planning for a whole general assembly system is a huge and complex job, several process planners should execute their planning jobs and share information. Therefore, each planner should provide others with his/her results with continuous on-line communication and cooperation. In this research, a web-based system for concurrent and collaborative process planning for automotive general assembly is developed. By using this system, savings in time and cost of assembly process planning are possible, and the reliability of the planning result is improved.

  • It is a very difficult task to establish a collaborative procedure in a new business that requires multilateral collaboration or to revise the regulation by analyzing and proving objectively the problems in the collaborative process conducted already by multilateral collaboration. In this paper, we proposed an optimization model for collaborative process to establish the operation procedure between collaborative parties using PERT/CPM network diagram which allows us to calculate the processing time. In order to verify the effectiveness and usefulness of our model for the collaboration process optimization developed in this study, we applied the developed collaborative procedure to student selection of the work-and-study-in-parallel course associated with a degree executed by Ministry of Employment and Labor. This study can be useful not only for newly establishing or reconfiguring collaborative procedures but also for standardizing the business procedures for building information systems between collaborative organizations.

  • This paper introduces two platforms created by the development team at CORE studio, Thornton Tomasetti's global innovation studio. Collaborative platforms change the way that parties communicate and develop projects. Wikipedia is one of many great examples for a platform that supports collaborative development of a product - the world's largest encyclopedia. In the AEC industry, no such platform exists that can be used for collaborative development of a building project, and hence, information exchange between the parties involved, and modeling programs used in a project is slow and opaque. The platforms introduced in this paper allow for much greater transparency at all stages of the building design process, and hence improve the flow of information between parties involved in the process, both firm-internal and external. While traditionally, the use of a large number of different modeling and analysis platforms is hard to manage by a project team; this paper introduces methods that strengthen the design process by using a multitude of programs needed in the different building design phases.

  • This study proposes an approach to Product Data Management (PDM) education for collaborative product data management, which can support collaborative product development process. This approach introduces social media and a PDM system into a framework for PDM education supported by consistent product development process and product data model. It has been applied to two PDM classes and the result shows that the social media in PDM education can support not only experiences of the collaborative product data management but also interactive and informal communications among instructors and participants using integrated social media with product data during courses.

  • These days we come across many wicked problems whose solutions are beyond individuals intellectual ability. These problems can be resolved through collaborative group interaction. We developed an internet-based asynchronous group interaction support system, after looking into the collaborative problem solving process and the IBIS (Issue-Based Information System) argumentation model. It has the following characteristics ; 1) it is developed based on the modified IBIS model which is a model for group interaction to resolve wicked problems ; 2) it supports both processes of seeking and comparing solutions, while most similar systems do not have a feature to support the latter process ; 3) different structures can be defined dynamically according to the purpose of group interaction, so that it could be used for collaborative problem solving in a specific domain. To show the usability of the system, we carried out an experiment, whose result is shown at the end.

  • The information technology of computers and computer tools have become so powerful that virtual enterprises are not just concepts any longer The virtual enterprises comprise distributed facilities and it is necessary to have a collaborative system among them. This paper proposes the modeling process of web-based collaborative system in the distributed manufacturing environment. It also presents the information infrastructure in order to communicate and to share the information more efficiently among the collaboration subsystem. The web-based collaborative system consists of four processes: 1) product design, 2) procurement of DB information, 3) query process, and 4) negotiation. The proposed web-based collaborative system will be implemented with network technologies.

  • As long as the information systems are spread out, various efforts are being attempted to get the effective results by the system. As a result, a new management strategy has been appeared, referred to as "collaboration", and it is necessary to use a right methodology for modeling collaborative processes accordingly. Even though many modeling methodologies such as IDEF3, Petri-Nets, UML, and ARIS have been widely used for modeling processes, they are inadequate for clearly representing collaborative processes. Some researchers, therefore, have suggested new modeling methodologies for describing collaborative processes including CPM (collaborative process modeling). In this paper, we introduce an extended version of CPM method (i.e., exCPM) as a tool for modeling collaborative works after analyzing advantages and disadvantages of aforementioned methodologies. One of distinct characteristics of exCPM is that model verification is possible by transforming the exCPM models into Petri-Nets models. We also demonstrate transformation of an exCPM model in this paper with case studies for model verification.
