This study examined the impact of variables(collaboration, convergence motive, convergence thinking) on the creativity problem solving of engineering college students. 522 students among engineering colleges in Pusan and Ulsan were sampled. For the statistical analysis, analysis of covariance structure by AMOS 18.0 was applied. Results from structural equation modeling analyses indicated that a hypothesized model produced a better fit to the data than a comparative structural model. The hypothesized model shows the following results. On the basis of the hypothesized model, collaboration effected to directly convergence motive and creative problem solving, and convergence motive effected to directly convergence thinking, convergence motive effected to directly creative problem solving, convergence thinking effected to directly creative problem solving, and collaboration effected to indirectly convergence thinking by convergence motive. Therefore this study suggested the collaboration, convergence motive and convergence thinking are significantly variables to facilitate the creative problem solving for knowledge fusion in engineering.
Education for the future society should emphasize the experience of sharing, coexisting, and solving problems in cooperation with each other in the community. Accordingly, in addition to the problem-solving capability, which is the ultimate goal of mathematics education, it is necessary to strengthen the capability to solve unstructured problems through collaboration. This study attempted to suggest that solving complex problems through collaboration is used in school classes or gifted education by introducing polymath that solves problems using collective intelligence. Accordingly, a target problem was set and an example of polymath in which community members exert each other's intelligence to solve the problem. In addition, by investigating the perceptions of students who have experienced polymath, positive aspects and improvements of polymath were suggested. Through this, this study can contribute to revitalization of mathematics teaching and learning methods using collective intelligence.
This study empirically examined different patterns of collaborative R&D project with their key success factors(KSFs), using data from 82 projects in the Korean electronic parts industry. The patterns of R&D collaboration were categorized into 4 types by two criteria development motive(technology Push/market pull) and Project initiator (focal firm/partner). The bivariate relationships revealed that project characteristics (technological complexity, market uncertainty), management characteristics (participation in project formulation), problem solving characteristics(problem solving performance of the focal firm, users active role in problem solving, active role of university or research institute in problem solving) and success rates appear to be different among four types of collaboration. Each type of collaborative R&D projects also had different KSFs. The KSFs of type 1 (technology Push and focal firm initiation), for instance, include the strategic importance of the project, focal firms share of cost, active role of university or research institute in problem solving, while those of type 4(market pull and customer initiation) cover reliability of partner relationship, a time at partners involvement, information sharing. The findings suggest that the different contingencies brought different patterns and KSFs of collaborative R&D project, since different information, resources, and partners roles were needed to successfully implement the projects according to development motive and project initiator Finally, managerial, policy, and theoretical implications for the collaborative R&D activities in the Korean electronics parts industry were discussed, based on empirical results of this study.
The purpose of this study is to examine a theoretical framework for the interactions of learning in a small group setting of mathematical problem solving. Many researchers already have described the theoretical background for the small group settings in problem solving. However, most of the literatures merely have reported findings of achievement and rising of test scores. They ignored the observation of process taken during the small group work and have not determined how various psychological, social and academic effects are created. As results of the study, two types, mutual collaboration and asymmetric collaboration, of interactions are observed as the interactions of learning, which are conceived as the cores of authentic mathematical activities.
This study investigated the influence of peer friendliness, conflict, and collaboration on children's problem solving performance. Eighty-two preschool children (41 pairs) filled out the Friendship Assessment Inventory and participated in 3 problem-solving sessions using the Tower of Hanoi. Results showed that just working together does not improve children's problem solving performance. The degree of friendliness children have for each other has a significant effect on their problem solving performance. The children who worked with more friendly peers were more collaborative and were better problem solvers than those who worked with less friendly peers. This study suggests the importance of the relationship between interacting peers on problem solving performance.
