Multiply resistant Shigella strains isolated in Taegu area were subjected for the characterization of R plasmids. All strains isolated in 1984 and 1985 were susceptible to gentamicin, amikacin, and cephalothin, and most strains were susceptible to kanamycin (Km) and rifampin by agar dilution antimicrobial susceptibility test. The resistance frequency of S. flexneri against ampicillin (Ap) was higher than that of S. sonnei. The strains resistant to sulfisomidine (Su) and trimethoprim (Tp) were found at higher frequency in S. sonnei than in S. flexneri. The most prevalent resistance pattern of S. flexneri was chloramphenicol (Cm) tetracycline (Tc) streptomycin (Sm) Ap, followed by the pattern of CmTcSmSuApTp, CmTcSmSuApTp nalidixic acid, and CmTcSmSuAp in the decreasing order. The antibiogram of CmTcSmSuTp was found to be the most frequent pattern in S. sonnei. The ratio of conjugal transfer of S. flexneri was 47% and 75% of S. sonnei. The average number of plasmid harboring in Shigella was 4 and the size of plasmid ranged 1.3 to 134 megadalton (Mdal). Most S. flexneri carried plasmids of 2 to 3 Mdal and S. sonnei carried those of 3 to 4 Mdal size. The sizes of conjugative plasmids ranged 40-90 Mdal. The incompatibility group (Inc) F II plasmids (54-59 Mdal) were most frequent and rare Inc B plasmids (60 Mdal) of isolates in 1979 and 1980 and Inc FI (87 Mdal) of 1983 isolates were able to be classified by the colony test with standard reference plasmids. The R plasmids of known Inc group were tested for the restriction endonuclease analysis. The pattern of plasmids digested by EcoRl were apparently different by the Inc group but there was no significant difference between species or by the resistance patterns. Nonconjugative plasmids and their phenotypes were identified by transformation test. The transformants were resistant to less than two drugs. Colicin producing transformants carried the Col plasmid of 3.7 or 3.9 Mdal size. $Ap^r$ plasmids derived from S. sonnei were found to be mobilized by transfer factor RT641 to E. coli #CS100. $Ap^r$ plasm ids of same size shared by S. flexneri, S. sonnei, and E. coli were digested with Pstl. All of them showed two restriction fragments of 2.8 kilobase(kb) and 0.7kb. Other plasmids ($Sm^r\;Su^r$) derived from S. flexneri, S. boydii, and S. sonnei were digested with Pstl and they showed same restriction fragment patterns of 3.1kb and 2.9kb. The plasmid profiles of three strains of S. sonnei producing colicin and showing same resistance pattern of CmTcSmSuApTpKm appeared to be similar. Restriction patterns by EcoRl and the behavior of plasmids in conjugation or transformation process were also similar between those plasmids. The restriction patterns were significantly different between the plasmids of Inc FI group and those of unclassified Inc group.
The purpose of this study was to examine O serotypes, colicin and hemolysin production. antibiotic susceptibility and haemagglutinating ability to animal erythrocytes among Escherichia coli strains isolated from pigeons in Taegu province. Of the 166 strains isolated, 28 strains (16.9%) were classified into 6 O serotypes and their types were O20(42.9%), O15(17.9%), O139(14.3%), O101(10.7%), O149(7.1%) and O8(7.1%). Of the 166 strains isolated, none was hemolytic and 3(1.8%) were colicinogenic. Antibiotic susceptibility test of Escherichia coli isolates was performed by the agar dilution method, using ampicillin, chloramphnicol, gentamicin, rifampicin, streptomycin (Sm), nalidixic acid, sulfadimethoxine and tetracycline (Tc). Forty four strains (26.5%) were resistant to one or more drugs and the most common resistance patterns were SmTc (27.3%). Of the 44 drug resistant strains, 6 strains haemagglutinated erythrocytes of chicken, guinea pig and 2 of the 6 strains agglutinated goose erythrocytes.
The result of studying the pathogenicity of Salmonella typhimurium and S enteritidis isolated from domestic animals in Gyeongbuk province were summarized as follows. In Congo-red binding test, S typhimurium had much more rough types than S enteritidis. In colicin production test, 4 strains of S typhimurium were positive but all of S enteritidis were negative. In hemolysin production test, all of S typhimurium and S enteritidis were negative. In Guinea pig serum resistant test, all of S typhimurium and S enteritidis were positive. As a result of pathogenicity test to mice, 54.4% of mice were died. Therefore, S typhimurium and S enteritidis were considered as highly pathogenic. S typhimurium DT104 and S enteritidis PT4 were more pathogenic to mice than other phage types of same serovar. S typhimurium and S enteritidis were considered not so pathogenic for 6-day-old chickens. The recovery rates of Salmonella stains from mice and chickens inoculated were 96.8%, and 54%, respectively. In chickens, proportional to the time from 2 weeks after challenge inoculation, the recovery rates were noticeably decreased.
Reproductive performance of gilts and sows in ordinary piggeries was investigated with special reference to litter size, piglets weaned per litter, the cause of preweaning mortality and the incidence of diarrhea. Biochemical properties of Escherichia coli isolated from piglets with diarrhea were also determined. The results obtained are summarised as follows: 1. Of the 2,226 gilts and sows farrowed, average number of piglets born alived and weaned piglets per litter were 8.9 and 7.1, respectively, indicating that both gilts and sows lost more than 20% of all their piglets prior to weaning. 2. The causes of preweaning mortality in order of prevalence were diarrhea (39.3%), pneumonia (20.0%), crushing (13.8%), starvation (11.0%) and born weak (10.3%). 3. Incidence of 3 diarrheal syndromes of piglets, i.e. 1 week diarrhea, 3 week diarrhea and post-weaning diarrhea were 18.4%, 66.1% and 15.5%, respectively, showing that most farms were suffering from so called 'white scours' in piglets 14~28 days old. 4. Biochemical properties of 268 cultures of E. coli isolated from diarrheal piglets were tested and compared with those of standard strains of porcine origin. All those properties of isolates were matched to standard E. coli teated while variable results were obtained with haemolytic capabilities of cultures tested. 5. Of 147 isolates 16 cultures (10.9%) were identified as colicin producers.
