  • The stability of rice cultivation in Korea is largely depended on climatic conditions, especially, low temperature at the period of early growth stage and after heading. The improvement of cold tolerant varieties and appropriate cultural practices in rice are very effective to minimize the cold damage. This paper is summarized the mechanism and counterplans of cold injury of rice plants. The paddy area having commonly cold injury in Korea is approximately 15, 522ha in 1,709 sites on the national scale. The cold damage at seedling stage in nursery bed appeared to poor germination, leaf discoloration, dead seedlings and seedling rot ect.. At the vegetative stage, the decreased tiller number due to poor rooting and the delayed heading caused by slow growth and panicle differentiation are commonly showed. The cold injury at early reproductive stage appeared to the degeneration of spikelets and rachis - branches, while that at meiosis stage showed to increased sterility due to poor development of pollen and shortened panicle length with delaying heading, therefore the grain yield is largely decreased. The cold damage at heading and ripening stages showed to poor pollination and fertilization, low panicle exsertion, poor grain filling and finally grain quality became low. To minimize the cold injury to rice plants by low temperature, following counterplans would be recommonded ; Improvement of the cold toelrant rice varieties for the regions of midmountains and alpines. Raising healthy seedlings at upland nursery beds and by using of growth regulators such as ABA, Fuchiwang and Tachiace. Soil improvement and organic matter application to reduce cold damage by increasing water and fertilizer holding capacities in the paddy field having commonly cold water and in the place where cold damage is regularly occurred. Appropriate fertilization for raising healthy rice plants to tolerate under low temperature condition. Water management to increase water temperature in the paddy such as depth watering, round channels and polyethylene tubes around the field. Establishment of the optimum cultivation time of rice based on minimum, mean and maximum temperatures at different regions with appropriate rice varieties.

  • Cold start of a fuel cell system is a major obstacle should be overcome as to commercialize it, especially for passenger vehicle applications. However, the cold start characteristics is so complicated since it involves various phenomenon such as ice-blocking in GDL, ionic conductivity in membrane affected by water activity with phase change, heat transfer through components such as bipolarplates or endplates, electro-chemical reactions affected by circumferential temperature and humidity as well. Axiomatic design provides a systematic method to investigate the complex phenomenon although it was developed as a methodology to establish logical design procedure by Nam P. Suh in 1990s. This paper presents a framework to approach the complex cold start problem using Axiomatic Design which features simplifying a problem through hierarchical decomposition and decoupling from the view of functional requirements and design parameters.

  • In the present study, the effect of cold reduction ratio on the spherodization rate of SK85 high carbon steel sheet was investigated. High carbon steel sheet fabricated by POSCO was soaked at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in a box furnace and then treated at $570^{\circ}C$ for 5 min in a salt bath furnace followed by water quenching to obtain a fine pearlite structure. Cold rolling was conducted on the sheets of fine pearlite by reduction ratios of 20, 30, and 40 % and heat treatment for spheroidization was carried out at $720^{\circ}C$ for the various time intervals from 0.1 to 32 hrs. Area fraction of spheroidized cementite was measured with an image analyzer as a function of cold reduction ratios and duration times.

  • In this paper, the most important oceangraphic phenomena of the summer season in the East China Sea are reviewed. The hydrographic conditions in the suface layer above the seasonal thermocline are under great influence from solar heating, fresh water runoff mainly from the Yangtze River, and summer wind fields. In the lower layer below the thermocline, several distinct water masses e.g. the Kuroshio surface water, the Western North Pacific Central Water and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water are intruded in response to the adjustment of the field of mass to the various dynamical processes. The frontal mixing between the intruded Yellow Sea Bottom Cold. Water and the Western North Pacific Central Water takes place in the bottom layer over the continental shelf south off Cheju Is. This mixed water probably has mush influence on the water properties of the intermediate and bottom layer around Cheju Is. and the south coast of Korea.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of raising seedling methods of cold water, low night temperature, and abandoned mine on forcing culture of strawberry. The results were as follows ;1. $17^{\circ}C$ cold water alone and cold water plus 8-hour short day treatments significantly accelerated the flower bud differentiation of Nyoho cultivar to 11 and 15 days, respectively, comparing to common soil raising seedling.2. The date of flower bud differentiation of Nyoho cultivar as influenced by cold water treatment the 17th, the 13th and the 10th of September, respectively, when the seedlings were treated on the 10th of September and on the 25th and the 10th of August in 1991. In 1992, data showed that the flower bud differentiation dates were the 4th and the 2nd of September and the 29th of August when cold water treatment was done on the 10th of August and on the 25th and the 10th of July.3. The first harvest date when Nyoho cultivar was treated by cold water for 30days from Jul. 25 was Nov. 10, this implying that the harvesting day could advanced to 19 days comparing to that by the common soil raising seedling method. The resulting yield was recorded to 21.94 ton per hectare.4. Regardless of the starting date of the treatment, $13^{\circ}C$ low night temperature plus 8-plus short day treatments for 20 days required 17 days to differentiate the flower bud of Nyoho cultivar. Harvesting day could be advanced to 59 days comparing to that by the common raising seedling method when the seedling was treated on July 25, this resulting in increasing the total yield obtained by April 14 of following year to 8.25 ton per hectare.5. When the seedlings of both Nyoho and Hokowase cultivars were raised under the condition of abandoned mine, flowering and harvest date were earlier by the treatment for 20 days than that for 30 days or 40 days. The highest yiesd obtained was recorded in Nyoho cultivar or 1.88 ton per hectare.

  • Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) systems utilize the temperature difference between the surface water and deep ocean water to generate electrical energy. In addition to ocean surface waves, wind and current, in certain locations like the Andaman Sea, Sulu Sea and the South China Sea the presence of strong internal waves may become a concern in floating OTEC system design. The current paper focuses on studying the dependence of the CWP hydrodynamic drag on relative velocity of the flow around the pipe, the effect of drag amplification due to vortex induced vibrations and the influence of internal waves on the floating semi and the cold water pipe integrated OTEC system. Two CWP sizes are modeled; the 4m diameter pipe represents a small scale prototype and the 10m diameter pipe represents a full commercial size CWP. are considered in the study.

  • The characteristics of surface circulation in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are discussed by analyzing a great deal of current data observed by 142 sets of mooring buoy and 58 sets of drifters trajectories collected in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea through domestic and abroad measurements. Some major features are demonstrated as bellow: 1) Tsushima Warm Current flows away from the Kuroshio and has multiple sources in warm half year and comes only from Kuroshio surface water in cold half year. 2) Taiwan Warm Current comes mainly from the Taiwan Strait Water in warm half year and comes from the intruded Kuroshio surface water and branches near 27N in cold half year. 3) The Changjiang Diluted Water turns towards Cheju Island in summer and flows southward along the coastal line in winter. 4) The study sea area is an eddy developing area, especially in the southern area of Cheju Island and northern area of Taiwan.

  • Hot leg break LBLOCA(Large Break LOCA) had a potential to be a containment maximum pressure accident in YGN3&4, which was induced from excessive conservatism in the CE analysis methodology of mass and energy release. This study conducted mass and energy release experiment for the hot leg break LBLOCA during post blowdown with an integral test facility, SNUF(Seoul National University Facility). This facility simulated YGN 3&4 with volume ratio of 1/1140 based on Ishii's three level scaling. Experiment showed that SI(Safety Injection) water refilled cold leg first and core later. SI water was vaporized in the core, which resulted in the repressurization of reactor. This increase of pressure drove the water in cold leg to flow up half height of U tubes. However, since the water was drained back soon, the release through the SG side broken section by evaporation was negligibly small. This study also provided experimental assessment of RELAP5 results by KAERI for the release through the SG side broken section.
