  • Using the plasma that we developed to generate a low-temperature plasma at atmospheric pressure, we have investigated the etching possibility of tin oxide $(SnO_2)$ thin films. Hydrogen and methane radicals generated from the plasma were observed and their intensity was found to be dependent on the cathode material by an analysis with optical emission spectroscopy as well as by the plasma impedance. The etching ability of this plasma was evaluated by an emission intensity as well as by the evaluation of impedance using a plasma I-V curve.

  • In this paper, a fretting testing machine is developed using ball-on-flat test apparatus. Precise micro-slip motion is produced by a linear stage. A relative displacement between a ball and a flat specimen is measured with a laser displacement sensor. Dry friction tests are conducted with AISI 52100 steel balls and cold-rolled high strength steel plates at room temperature and ambient humidity. The evolution of the kinetic friction coefficient is determined. Comparison between measured friction coefficients and those found in the literature is then carried out. Fretting tests with an electro-deposited coating are employed at an amplitude of 0.05 mm. Slip regime is identified with slip ratio. It is demonstrated that a developed testing machine allows determining the friction coefficient under fretting condition.

  • Many problems in various aspects such as generation of plastic/dry contraction cracks and cold joints can be caused unless proper quality control measures are established in hot weather circumstances. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the crack patterns of concrete by applying a change in 3 surface curing methods such as a mono aluminum-deposited bubble sheet developed to reduce the temperature and cracks through reflection of heat in summer and a PE film and a surface exposure used generally to an actually constructed apartment slab. The study result confirmed that the best concrete crack reduction effect can be obtained with a mono aluminum-deposited bubble sheet.

  • The characteristics of the East Asian summer monsoon circulation associated with the cool and wet summer of 1993 and the warm and dry summer of 1994 are investigated by analyzing the atmospheric circulations features in the upper and lower troposphere and by examining the global SST and associated tropical convective precipitation fields. The negative geopotential height anomalies at 500 hPa and 200 hPa in 1993 over East Asia, the central North Pacific, and the western United States were replaced by positive ones in 1994. In addition, the 200 hPa zonal wind anomaly averaged over the East Asian summer monsoon region is negatively correlated with the Korean summer temperature anomaly. The subtropical jet stream in 1993 was displaced into the central part of Korea well south of its normal position. The western Pacific subtropical high was shifted southward, and the East Asian summer rainfall and temperature was above-normal and below-normal, respectively due to the southwestward extension of a cold and dry polar airmass from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Est Sea. In contrast, the subtropical jet stream in 1994 was displaced well north of its normal position. The abrupt northward shift of the western Pacific subtropical high was accompanied with the rapid northward movement of the rain band of the East Asian summer monsoon rainfall. The anomaly patterns of the East Asia summer rainfall and temperature were opposite to those of 1993. Large sea surface temperature anomalies of opposite signs existed in the tropical Pacific with a mature El $Ni{\~{n}o$ in 1993 and a weak La $Ni{\~{n}a$ condition in 1994. The role of the anomalous convective precipitation in the western Pacific and the Indian Ocean related with the variations in the low-level cross-equatorial flow along the northwestern periphery of the Australian high and the Mascarene high is probably to influence a large-scale atmospheric circulation over the East Asia during both the years.

  • The concept of sensible temperature in winter is an attempt to quantify the sensation of cold by dry-bulb temperature combined with wind speed. Siple-Passel’s windchill equivalent temperature originated in experiments that are not conformable to various human conditions. Therefore, many investigators have found the flaws which are listed. Steadman’s model is based on the concept of thermal equilibrium and more sound and more representative of human conditions. But no classifications exist for Steadman’s windchill equivalent temperature, yet. The JAG/TI-model which was developed by US and Canada is more accurate, easy to understand and reflects human beings by conducting experiments using human volunteers but didn't take into account solar radiation, wet condition and physical state of the individual. Because of individual differences in people’s age, activity, health, metabolic rate, etc., no experimental evidence exists to suggest whether Siple-Passel’s, Steadman’s and JAG/TI-model’s windchill equivalent temperature is more applicable to the majority of people. Therefore we need the windchill model which is best applicable to Korean Army.

  • In this study 17 GCMs' simulations of late 20th century climate in Korea are examined. A regionally averaged time series formed by averaging the temperature and precipitation values at all the Korean grid points. In order to compare general circulation models with observations, observed spatially averaged temperature and precipitation is calculated using 24 stations for 1971 to 2000. The annual mean difference between models and observed data are compared. For temperature, most models have a slight cold bias. The models with least bias in annual average temperature are NIES(MIROC3.2 hires), GISS(AOM) and INGV(SXG2005). For precipitation, almost all models have a dry bias, and for some the bias exceeds 50%. Models with lowest bias are NIES(MIROC3.2 hires), CCCma(CGCM3-T47) and MPI-M(ECHAM5-OM). The models' simulated seasonal cycles show that for temperature, CSIRO(Mk3.0) has the best followed by CCCma(CGCM3-T47) and CCCma(CGCM3-T63), and for precipitation, NIES(MIROC3.2 hires) has the best followed by CSIRO(Mk3.0) and CNRM(CM3). In the assessment using Taylor diagram, CCCma(CGCM3-T47) ranks the best for temperature, and NIES(MIROC3.2 hires) ranks the best for precipitation.

  • The objectives of the experiment were to examine the effects of extrusion process variables on the yield of extruded ginseng extract and to determine the effect of ratio of extruded ginseng extract and microcrystalline cellulose on characteristics of spheronized granules by cold extrusion-spheronization process. Extrusion process variables observed were feed moisture (15, 22, 29%), die temperature (90 110 13$0^{\circ}C$) and screw speed (150 200, 250 rpm). The results showed that moisture content of dried ginseng significantly affected extraction yield (P<0.05). The less moisture content of the feed resulted in the higher yield of the extract. Moisture content of 15%, screw speed of 250 rpm and die temperature of 13$0^{\circ}C$ gave the highest yield of ginseng extract. Mean extraction yield of extruded ginseng using hot water extraction was greatly improved by extrusion process The extract yield of extruded ginseng was 43.5% which was higher than that of red ginseng (38.3%) and white ginseng (29.0%) produced by traditional process. It was possible to make from the mixture of microcrystalline cellulose (200 g) mixed with different concentration of 200 mL solution (0, 5, 20, 30 40 50 60% of ginseng extract with 59.2% dry solid) by using cold extrusion spheronization. When the concentration of ginseng extract Increased, the granulation yield was improved but friability and compression index were reduced. Ginseng extract such as saponin was completely released from spheronized granules in distilled water within 10 min. It can be concluded that spheroniged granule with ginseng extract could be packed in gelatin capsule since granules Possessed proper physical properties and quick release of saponin.

  • Physiochemical characters of sea waters during summer flood- and winter dry-seasons and their spatial variations were investigated along the coastal area off the eastern South Sea, Korea. Using the hierarchical clustering method, in this study, we present comprehensive analyses of coastal waters masses and their seasonal variations. The results revealed that the coastal water of the study area was classified into six water masses (A to F). During summer season, the surface water was mainly occupied by the coastal pseudo-estuarine water (water mass B) with low salinity and high nutrients and the river-dominated coastal water (water mass C) with low nutrients, respectively. The bottom water was dominated by cold water (water mass D) with very low temperature, high salinity and high nutrients, compared to masses of surface water. Notably, the water mass B, with high concentrations of nutrients (silicate and nitrogen) and low salinity, which is strongly controlled by the water quality of river freshwater, seems to play an important role in controlling the water quality and further regulating physical processes on ecosystem in the eastern coastal area of South Sea. The water mass D (bottom cold water) coupled with a strong thermocline, which exists in near-bottom layer along the western margin of Korea Strait, has a low temperature, pH and DO, but abundant nutrients. This water mass disappears in winter owing to strong vertical mixing, and subsequently may act as a pool for nutrients during winter dry-season. On the other hand, vertically well-mixed water column during the winter season was typically occupied by the Tsushima (water mass E) and the coastal water (water mass F) with a development of coastal front formed in a transition zone between them. These winter water masses were characterized by low nutrient concentration and balance in N/P ratio, compared with summer season with high nutrient concentrations and strong N-limitation. Accordingly, the analysis of water masses will help one to better chemical and biological processes in coastal area. In most of the study area, characteristically, the growth of phytoplankton community is limited by nitrogen, which is clearly different with coastal environment of West Sea of Korea, with a relative lack of phosphorus. It showed the western and the southern coasts in Korea are substantially different from each other in environmental and ecological characteristics.

  • The performance of air-to-air heat exchanger has been investigated with rotating porous plates newly developed in this study. With an equal interval of 18 mm, the rotating porous plates are installed inside the heat exchanger where the hot and cold airs enter at opposite ends. When flowing in opposite directions by the separating plate installed in the center of the rotating porous plates, the airs give and receive the heat each other. Dry bulb temperature is set by adjusting heat supply at heater. In order to measure the temperature distribution of the hot air side inside heat exchanger, the thermocouples are inserted between the plates. The first location of thermocouple is 10mm downstream from the inlet of heat exchanger, and succeeding ten locations are aligned at an equal interval of 18mm. From the experiment of air-to-air heat exchanger with the rotating porous plates, the heat transfer rate increased as both air flow rate and RPM of the rotating porous plate increased. It was found that the overall heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase in RPM of porous plate at the conditions of the same air flow rate.
