  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to report the clinical effect on a 54-year-old diabetes patient, categorized into taeeumin exterior disease, after taking herbal medicine. Methods The patient was diagnosed as taeeumin's esophagus-cold pattern and type 2 diabetes symptoms in taeeumin patient were indigestion, fatigue, and headache. We assessed the changes of fasting blood sugar(FBS), hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c), and total cholesterol. Results and Conclusions FBS, HbA1c, and total cholesterol reduced after treated by Jowiseungchungtang-gamibang three times per day for 5 months. These results show that treating a diabetic patient, accompanied by esophagus-cold symptoms, with Jowiseungchungtang-gamibang particularly improves high blood glucose after orthopedic surgery in practicing healthy eating habits.

  • Acupuncture and herbal treatment are based on diagnosis of cold and heat pattern in Traditional Korean Medicine. This diagnosis is accomplished through pulse, tongue and question examination, which are not objective. Quantification and objectification of this diagnosis process are required for efficacious treatment and traditional medicine development. In this study, we developed the cold-heat pattern questionnaire for this purpose. Seventy nine patients who visited oriental medical hospital were included in this study. The cold-heat pattern questionnaire was composed of many questions about patient's physical condition, which were derived from The Traditional Oriental Medical Literature with Delphi Technique. Patients filled out the cold-heat pattern questionnaire by themselves. Diagnosis of cold and heat pattern are conducted separately by oriental medical doctors with more than 5 years' clinical experience. Various physical condition factors were derived for the cold-heat pattern questionnaire. (Preference temperature, Body temperature, Pain type, Face color, Urine, Stool and secretion features) Each cold and heat symptoms group acquired internal consistency. (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ : Cold - 0.605, Heat - 0.722) There were significant associations between doctor's diagnosis and cold symptoms in 'Aversion to cold', 'Desire for heat', 'Pale face', 'Loose stools'. (p-value < 0.05) There were significant associations between doctor's diagnosis and heat symptoms in 'Desire for cold', 'Body feverishness', 'Thirst'. (p-value < 0.05) The internal consistency results suggest that the cold-heat pattern questionnaire assured reliability. Besides, these results showed that cold-heat symptoms are apt to appear together with, and this can be indirect evidence that diagnosis of cold-heat pattern is valuable for comprehension about disease pattern. Moreover, respective symptoms of cold-heat pattern showed different significance with doctor's diagnosis. Consequently these significant symptoms can be more considered for comprehension of cold-heat pattern.

  • The main current in the pathology of oriental medicine is composed of etiologic factor, pathogenesis and clinical manifestation. The access of a disease is consist of etiologic factor, location of the lesion, nature of the disease and patient's condition. The nature of disease and the property of a drug are inseparably related to each other. The nature of disease is composed of six exogenous factors, cold and heat, deficiendy and excess, Yinyang and pain. Cold nature is divided into cold symptom due to excess and asthenia cold, fever nature is divided into sthenic fever and asthenic fever. According to the location, cold and heat can be subdivided into heat in the upper and cold in the lower, cold in the upper and heat in the lower, exterior cold and interior heat, exterior heat and interior cold. Yin syndrome characterized by hypofunction of the viscera is generated from insufficiency of yang-qi, excess of yin-coldness, deficiency of both qi and the blood.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the effect on cold hypersensitivity of hands, feet and low abdomen by Sasang constitutional treatment. For this purpose, the effects of a treatment were measured quantitatively using Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging (DITI). Methods: It was a case of report, the patient was a 25-year-old female whose chief complaint was cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet and low abdomem. We treated the patient with Sasang constitutional treatment, and the effect of a treatment was evaluated by DITI. Results: After Sasang constitutional treatment, the differences of temperature of hands, feet and low abdomem were decreased on DITI screening, respectively. Conclusions: Sasang constitutional treatment on cold hypersensitivity of hands, feet and low abdomen is effective. Further studies on diagnosis tools of low abdomen cold hypersensitivity are needed.

  • Objectives: Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a diagnostic tool for assessing the function of the autonomic nervous system. Although studies on the HRV characteristics of the cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet have been done, no study has compared HRV characteristics of cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet patients to that of normal Korean women. For this reason, this study compared the HRV characteristics of cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet patients and normal Korean women. Methods: We studied 130 cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet patients who visited Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong from 01 March 2011 to 11 August 2013. We measured HRV of Each patient. Patients are divided into under 29 years old, 30~39 years old, 40~49 years old and over 50 years old with age. Patient's HRV results are compared to that of normal Korean women in each age group. Results: In each age group, cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet patients' LF/HF was statistically lower than that of normal Korean women. Conclusions: HRV characteristics and symptoms of cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet is similar to that of cold induced vasodilation (CIVD). So, cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet can be considered as abnormal condition that CIVD is continued. More studies on measuring of blood flow of cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet patients are necessary.

  • Objective : This study was designed to investigate the effect of bee venom and Scolopendrae Corpus herbal acupuncture on the feeling of cold on legs. Methods : The patient was managed by bee venom and Scolopendrae Corpus herbal acupuncture, body acupuncture and herbal medicine. The following points were selected : BL40, BL57, BL60; SP6. After bee venom and Scolopendrae Corpus herbal acupuncture treatment, body acupuncture was performed at the same points. We evaluated the patient through Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(D.I.T.I). Results : After 12 times of treatment, the patient showed that clinical symptoms was decreased, VAS changed from 10 to 3 and there was also improvement change on D.I.T.I.. Conclusions : According to the results, bee venom and Scolopendrae Corpus herbal acupuncture may have the effects on the feeling of cold on legs. But further studies and required to prove the effects of this methods.
