  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the confinement coefficient of concrete-filled square stainless steel tubular (CFSSST) stub columns under axial loading. A fine finite 3D solid element model was established, which utilized a constitutive model of stainless steel considering the strain-hardening characteristics and a triaxial plastic-damage constitutive model of concrete with features of the parameter certainty under axial compression. The finite element analysis results revealed that the increased ultimate bearing capacity of CFSSST stub columns compared with their carbon steel counterparts was mainly due to that the composite action of CFSSST stub columns is stronger than that of carbon steel counterparts. A further parametric study was carried out based on the verified model, and it was found that the stress contribution of the stainless steel tube is higher than the carbon steel tube. The stress nephogram was simplified reasonably in accordance with the limit state of core concrete and a theoretical formula was proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of square CFSSST stub columns using superposition method. The predicted results showed satisfactory agreement with both the experimental and FE results. Finally, the comparisons of the experimental and predicted results using the proposed formula and the existing codes were illustrated.

  • In this study, wave characteristics coming with oblique incident angle to permeable trapezoidal submerged breakwater on the porous seabed are calculated by using boundary element method. This numerical analysis, based on the wave pressure function, is analyzing the continuity in the analytical region including fluid and structure. From the comparison of the reflection coefficients and damping coefficient, the results of this study are in good agreement with the existing results. The peak values of reflection coefficient obtained by permeable trapezoidal submerged breakwater on the porous seabed are smaller than those of permeable trapezoidal submerged breakwater on the non-porous seabed. The velocity vector in front of permeable trapezoidal submerged breakwater on the porous seabed is smaller than that in front of permeable trapezoidal submerged breakwater on the non-porous seabed with out the energy loss.

  • On the basis of Hoek-Brown failure criterion, a numerical solution for the shape of collapsing block in the rectangular cavity subjected to seepage forces is obtained by upper bound theorem of limit analysis. The seepage forces obtained from the gradient of excess pore pressure distribution are taken as external loadings in the limit analysis, and the pore pressure is easily calculated with pore pressure coefficient. Thus the seepage force is incorporated into the upper bound analysis as a work rate of external force. The upper solution of the shape of collapsing block is derived by virtue of variational calculation. In order to verify the validity of the method proposed in the paper, the result when the pore pressure coefficient equals zero, and only hydrostatic pressure is taken into consideration, is compared with that of previous work. The results show good effectiveness in calculating the collapsing block shape subjected to seepage forces. The influence of parameters on the failure mechanisms is investigated.

  • In this paper, a selective coefficient updating (SCU) approach at each branch of the per-tone equalization (PTEQ) structure has been applied for insufficient cyclic prefix (CP) length. Because of the high number of adaptive filters and their complex adaption process in the PTEQ structure, SCU has been proposed. Using this method leads to a reduction in the computational complexity, while the performance remains almost unchanged. Moreover, the use of set-membership filtering with variable step size is proposed for a sufficient CP case to increase convergence speed and decrease the average number of calculations. Simulation results show that despite the aforementioned algorithms having similar performance in comparison with conventional algorithms, they are able to reduce the number of calculations necessary. In addition, compensation of both the channel effect and the transmitter/receiver in-phase/quadrature-phase imbalances are achievable by these algorithms.

  • Even though there is a guideline for the required strength of pipe support in inspection, it does not mean the nominal strength which can be used for the form work design. And, Concrete Specification defines that the pipe support should be designed according to the steel design guidelines but the design details are not provided, such as buckling length and the sectional modulus, etc. For the better prediction of strength of pipe support, the slenderness ratio of support which reflects the boundary condition should be considered. In this paper, the elastic buckling formula based on the slenderness is derived. The formula contains the strength reduction factor that consider the strength deduction caused by initial lateral deformation and is 0.65 consistently regardless of boundary conditions. And the coefficient of effective buckling length is calculated from the experiment.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of various propeller tunnel shapes on the propulsion performance of a fishing boat. The propeller tunnel reduces the problem resulting from the open propeller accidentally catching the waste net and cable on the sea, as well as increasing the cruising speed. For 3 different tunnel geometries, the model test is conducted in the circular water channel, and the potential based panel method was applied to analyze the hydrodynamic characteristics of propeller. Also, both results are compared with each other to represent the difference between results of the model scale test and the potential theory. It is expected that these results could be referenced in the design of the propeller tunnel in consideration of the hydrodynamic interaction between the propeller and the tunnel.

  • The application of the Log-Pearson Type m distribution recommended by Water Resources Council, U. S. A. for flood frequency analysis requires the estimation of the regionalized skew coefficient. In this study, regionalized skew coefficients are estimated using a weighted regression model which relates at-site skews based on logarithms of observed annual flood peak series to both basin characteristics and precipitation data in the Han river and the Nakdong river basin. The model is developed with weighted least squares method in which the weights are determined by separating residual variance into that due to model error and due to sampling error. As the result of analysis, regionalized skews are estimated as - 0.732 and - 0.575 in the Han river and the Nakdong river basin, respectively.

  • To support some knowledge in planning irrigation system, short or long-term irrigation scheduling or determining irrigation reservoir capacity, it is necessary to estimate peak irrigation requirements and seasonal distribution of water demands for various return periods. In this paper Dry Day Index and Probable Evapotranspiration were evaluated to decide seasonal consumptive use of paddy rice for a design year using several decades' daily rainfall data and 5 years'('82~'86) actual evapotranspiration data, respectively. To obtain Dry Day Index that is defined as the number of probable dry days for a given period, Slade unsymmetrical distribution function was adopted. Dry Day Index was analysed for 5 and 10-day intervals. Each of them was evaluated with return periods of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 year. Their singnificance was tested by X$^2$ method. Based on these values, the Probable Evaportanspiration, that is the average daily ET both in dry days and rainy days during a given period, was estimated. Crop coefficient was also determined by the modified Penman equation proposed by Doorenbos & Pruitt.

  • Mobility of an indoor wheeled robot is affected by adhesion force that is related to various floor conditions. When the adhesion force between driving wheels and the floor decreases suddenly, the robot has slip state. First of all, this paper models adhesion characteristics and slip in wheeled robot. Secondly, the paper proposes estimation method of adhesion force coefficient(AFC) according to slip velocity. In order to overcome this slip problem, optimal slip velocity must be decided for stable movement of wheeled robot. The paper proposes an anti-slip control system based on an ordinary disturbance observer, that is, the re-adhesion control is achieved by reducing the driving torque enough to give maximum adhesion force coefficient. fuzzy logic controller(FLC) is petty useful with slip through that compare fuzzy with PI control for the controller performance. These procedure is implemented using a Pioneer 2-DXE parameter.
