The analysis of maximum diversity order and coding gain for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems over time-and frequency-selective (or doubly-selective) channels is addressed in this paper. A novel channel time-space correlation function is developed given the spatially correlated doubly-selective Rayleigh fading channel model. Based on this channel-model assumption, the upper-bound of pairwise error probability (PEP) for MIMO-OFDM systems is derived under the maximum likelihood (ML) detection. For a certain space-frequency code, we quantify the maximum diversity order and deduce the expression of coding gain. In this wort the impact of channel time selectivity is especially studied and a new definition of time diversity is illustrated correspondingly

In this paper, we present a method to improve the performance of the four transmit antenna quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (STBC) in the coded system. For the four transmit antenna case, the quasi-orthogonal STBC consists of two symbol groups which are orthogonal to each other, but intra group symbols are not. In uncoded system with the matched filter detection, constellation rotation can improve the performance. However, in coded systems, its gain is absorbed by the coding gain especially for lower rate code. We propose an iterative decoding method to improve the performance of quasi-orthogonal codes in coded systems. With conventional quasi-orthogonal STBC detection, the joint ML detection can be improved by iterative processing between the demapper and the decoder. Simulation results shows that the performance improvement is about 2dB at 1% frame error rate.

This paper examines an adaptive coding scheme for flat fading channels to maximize the average code rate of a coded system. The proposed adaptation technique is employed by using the required free distance of a rate compatible code depending on the channel realization. First, the system will calculate the required free distance based on the instantaneous channel gain. Based on this channel gain we will select a set of convolution code to optimize the code rate with a certain performance requirement. Simulation results show that our proposal can achieve a higher code rate.

In this paper, we propose an incremental redundancy(IR)-hybrid ARQ(HARQ) scheme which uses double binary turbo codes for error correction. We also propose a methodology for basic analysis of the throughput which is a performance index of HARQ. The proposed double binary turbo IR-HARQ scheme provides higher throughput than binary IR-HARQ, which uses binary turbo codes for error correction, at all $E_s/N_0$. An extra coding gain is also attained by using the proposed HARQ scheme over the coding gain achieved by turbo codes only.

This paper presents a low-complexity non-iterative soft-decision Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (SD-BCH) decoder architecture and design technique for wireless body area networks (WBANs). A SD-BCH decoder with test syndrome computation, a syndrome calculator, Chien search and metric check, and error location decision is proposed. The proposed SD-BCH decoder not only uses test syndromes, but also does not have an iteration process. The proposed SD-BCH decoder provides a 0.75~1 dB coding gain compared to a hard-decision BCH (HD-BCH) decoder, and almost similar coding gain compared to a conventional SD-BCH decoder. The proposed SD-BCH (63, 51) decoder was designed and implemented using 90-nm CMOS standard cell technology. Synthesis results show that the proposed non-iterative SD-BCH decoder using a serial structure can lead to a 75% reduction in hardware complexity and a clock speed 3.8 times faster than a conventional SD-BCH decoder.
Since the publication of Alamouti's famous space-time block code, various quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (QSTBC) for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) fading channels for more than two transmit antennas have been proposed. It has been shown that these codes cannot achieve full diversity at full rate. In this paper, we present a simple feedback scheme for rich scattering (flat Rayleigh fading) MIMO channels that improves the coding gain and diversity of a QSTBC for 2$^n$ (n=3, 4, ${\cdots}$) transmit antennas. The relevant channel state information is sent back from the receiver to the transmitter quantized to one or two bits per code block. In this way, signal transmission with an improved coding gain and diversity near to the maximum diversity order is achieved. Such high diversity can be exploited with either a maximum-likelihood receiver or low-complexity zero-forcing receiver.

JVET (Joint Video Exploration Team) which explored evolving technologies of video coding with capabilities beyond HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), released a references software codec named the Joint Exploration Model (JEM) for performance verification of coding technologies. JEM has 67 intra prediction modes that extend the 35 modes of HEVC for intra prediction. Therefore, the enhancement of the coding performance is limited due to the overhead of prediction mode coding. In this paper, we analyze the probabilities of prediction modes selections, and then we propose a more efficient intra prediction mode coding based on the results of analyzed mode occurrence. In addition, we propose a context modeling for CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding) of the proposed mode coding. Experimental results show that the BD-rate gain is 0.02% on the AI (All Intra) coding structure compared to JEM 7.0. We need to optimize context modeling for additional coding performance enhancement.

This paper proposes a rate control algorithm for intra coding frame in HEVC encoder using a deep learning approach. The proposed algorithm is designed for CTU level bit allocation in intra frame by considering visual features spatially and temporally. Our features are generated using visual geometry group (VGG-16) with deep convolutional layers, then it is used for bit allocation per each CTU within an intra frame. According to our experiments, the proposed algorithm can achieve -2.04% Luma component BD-rate gain with minimal bit accuracy loss against the HM-16.20 rate control model.

An efficient wavelet packet algorithm to find wavelet packet quickly is presented in this paper. The top-down method maximizing the transform coding gain that is obtained from the second moment of the band is used to divide the subbands into wavelet tree. The bit allocation for each band in the tree is performed in proportion to its variance. Bands are coded by the lossless coding algorithm called the bit plane run length coding(BPRLC) and uniform quantizer. The proposed algorithm is compared with of the single tree algorithim proposed by Ramchandran and Vetterli. To verify the efficiency of our algorithm, simulations are jperformed using several sets of images. The results show us that our method reduces the execution time by about forty percent of that required by the single tree method while maintaining the comparable reconstructed image qualities.

This paper presents an efficient motion and disparity prediction method for multi-view video coding based on the high efficient video coding (HEVC) standard. The proposed method exploits inter-view candidates for effective prediction of the motion or disparity vector to be coded. The inter-view candidates include not only the motion vectors of adjacent views, but also global disparities across views. The motion vectors coded earlier in an adjacent view were found to be helpful in predicting the current motion vector to reduce the number of bits used in the motion vector information. In addition, the proposed disparity prediction using the global disparity method was found to be effective for interview predictions. A multi-view version based on HEVC was used to evaluate the proposed algorithm, and the proposed correspondence prediction method was implemented on a multi-view platform based on HEVC. The proposed algorithm yielded a coding gain of approximately 2.9% in a high efficiency configuration random access mode.
