  • The adaptive coded modulation (ACM) is a promissing way to provide a substantial improvement in spectral efficiency for slow fading channels. The basic idea is to adapt system functional-ity such as modulation, coding, information rate, and transmission power to varying channel conditions. In this work, the potential of adaptive coded modulation is investigated using cut-off rate anal-ysis in a unified way and using computer simulation. The anal-ysis includes various effects of fading channels such as feedback delay and channel prediction error. It was shown that the adaptive coded modulation can provide several folds of increase in spectral efficiency compared to a fixed coded-modulation system employing QPSK when channel varies slowly.

  • In this papre, we describe a recently implemented echo canceller for digital cellular communication of Code Division Multiple Access(CDMA) that features time sharing of digital signal processor(DSP) over four channels in one DSP to reduce per channel costs. In the Public Land Mobile Network(PLMN), it is important to cancel the echo reflected from the Public Switched Telephone Network(PSTN) side. In case of digital mobile system, the round-trip delay of the echo is in excess of about 180 milliseconds due to frame-by-frame voice coding. It is necessary to cancel the echo in PLMN. We have developed a multi-channel echo canceller tht operates with Time Switch Module in a Mobile Switching Center(MSC). The general echo canceller needs PCM trunk interface circuits and the tone detection and disabling circuits, but the multi-channel echo canceller linked with Time Switch Module does not need them. Therefore we could develop the effective and economical echo canceller.

  • OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) scheme can compensate for distortions caused by multipath delay spread and reduce the burst errors caused by the Doppler effect since OFDM signals have long symbol durations. However, OFDM is required to be improved for high speed data transmission and large capacity. Therefore, coding schemes should be combined with OFDM. In this paper, it was studied that the performance of OFDM transmission scheme was improved in mobile communication channel by applying TCM, which has advantages of error correction and bandwidth efficiency. Simulation was carried out for two TCM models with different code efficient length. By mapping two models to square 16QAM, the model with the code efficient length of 2 achieved 3dB better than the other for the BER of 10/sub -3/. In conclusion, if we want to achieve a better performance with TCNA in OFDM applications, we should select a TCM with larger code efficient length.

  • SVC (Scalable Video Coding) is a new video coding standard to provide convergence media service in heterogeneous environments with different networks and diverse terminals through spatial-temporal-quality combined flexible scalabilities. This paper presents the performance analysis on packet loss in the delivery of SVC over IP networks and an efficient adaptation method to packet loss caused by buffer overflow. In particular, SVC with MGS (Medium Grained Scalability) as well as spatial and temporal scalabilities is addressed in the consideration of packet-based adaptation since finer adaptation is possible with a sufficient numbers of quality layers in MGS. The effect on spatio-temporal quality due to the packet loss of SVC with MGS is evaluated. In order to minimize quality degradation resulted by packet loss, the proposed adaptation of MGS based SVC first sets adaptation unit of AU (Access Unit) or GOP corresponding to allowed delay and then selectively discards packets in order of importance in terms of layer dependency. In the experiment, the effects of packet loss on quantitative qualities are analyzed and the effectiveness of the proposed adaptation to packet loss is shown.

  • In this paper, the fast encoding algorithm in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoder was studied. For the encoding efficiency, the current HEVC reference software is divided the input image into Coding Tree Unit (CTU). then, it should be re-divided into CU up to maximum depth in form of quad-tree for RDO (Rate-Distortion Optimization) in encoding precess. But, it is one of the reason why complexity is high in the encoding precess. In this paper, to reduce the high complexity in the encoding process, it proposed the method by determining the maximum depth of the CU using a hierarchical clustering at the pre-processing. The hierarchical clustering results represented an average combination of motion vectors (MV) on neighboring blocks. Experimental results showed that the proposed method could achieve an average of 16% time saving with minimal BD-rate loss at 1080p video resolution. When combined the previous fast algorithm, the proposed method could achieve an average 45.13% time saving with 1.84% BD-rate loss.

  • Due to the increasing demand of network convergence, in future, hybrid/integrated satellite and terrestrial systems will play an important role. In that case, compatibilities between the satellite and terrestrial systems are very important for efficiency of the systems. 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) is one of the 4G system. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce the design of interleaver for mobile satellite system based 3GPP LTE specification. The 4G system including the LTE specification adopted adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) schemes for efficient usage of resources, and the updating interval of resource allocation is an order of msec. However, because of the long round trip delay of satellite systems, we cannot employ the same AMC scheme specified for the terrestrial system, and thus it cannot effectively counteract to short term fadings. Therefore, in order to overcome these problems, we propose an interleaver scheme combined with AMC. We present the interleaver design results considering mobile satellite system based on the LTE and analyze the simulation results.

  • Seamless streaming of multimedia content that ensures Quality of Service over heterogeneous networks has been a desire for many multimedia services, for which the multimedia contents should be adapted to usage environments such as network characteristics, terminal capabilities, and user preferences. Scalability in video coding is a good feature to meet the requirement of heterogeneous networks. In this paper, we propose a dynamic adaptation scheme of H.264/AVC SVC bit-stream using the MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA) tool. MPEG-21 DIA framework provides systematic solutions in choosing an adaptation operation to given conditions and supports interoperable video adaptation. The experiment results show that the proposed adaptation scheme provides QoS-enabled delivery and consumption of SVC with time-varying constraints of network, terminal, and user preference, in a robust and efficient way. In particular, the proposed adaptation scheme is proved to work well with very low delay under the condition that the variation rate of the given network bandwidth is upto 62%.

  • Myotonic Dystrophies type 1 and 2 (DM1/2) are neuromuscular disorders which belong to a group of genetic diseases caused by unstable CTG triplet repeat (DM1) and CCTG tetranucleotide repeat (DM2) expansions. In DM1, CTG repeats are located within the 3' untranslated region of myotonin protein kinase (DMPK) gene on chromosome 19q. DM2 is caused by expansion of CCTG repeats located in the first intron of a gene coding for zinc finger factor 9 on chromosome 3q. The CTG and CCTG expansions are located in untranslated regions and are expressed as pre-mRNAs in nuclei (DM1 and DM2) and as mRNA in cytoplasm (DM1). Investigations of molecular alterations in DM1 discovered a new molecular mechanism responsible for this disease. Expansion of un-translated CUG repeats in the mutant DMPK mRNA disrupts biological functions of two CUG-binding proteins, CUGBP and MNBL. These proteins regulate translation and splicing of mRNAs coding for proteins which play a key role in skeletal muscle function. Expansion of CUG repeats alters these two stages of RNA metabolism in DM1 by titrating CUGBP1 and MNBL into mutant DMPK mRNA-protein complexes. Mouse models, in which levels of CUGBP1 and MNBL were modulated to mimic DM1, showed several symptoms of DM1 disease including muscular dystrophy, cataracts and myotonia. Mis-regulated levels of CUGBP1 in newborn mice cause a delay of muscle development mimicking muscle symptoms of congenital form of DM1 disease. Since expansion of CCTG repeats in DM2 is also located in untranslated region, it is predicted that DM2 mechanisms might be similar to those observed in DM1. However, differences in clinical phenotypes of DM1 and DM2 suggest some specific features in molecular pathways in both diseases. Recent publications suggest that number of pathways affected by RNA CUG and CCUG repeats could be larger than initially thought. Detailed studies of these pathways will help in developing therapy for patients affected with DM1 and DM2.
