  • L-Alanine(L-ala) and S-methyl-L-cysteine(L-mcy) cobalt(III) complexes of a flexible $N_2O_2$-type tetradentate ligand ethylenediamine-N,N'-di- -butyric acid(eddb), s-cis-[Co(eddb)(L-ala)] and s-cis-[Co(eddb)(L-mcy), have been prepared via the substitution reactions of the s-cis-$[Co(eddb)Cl_2]$-complex with, respectively, L-alanine and S-methyl-L-cysteine. Both L-alanine and S-methyl-L-cysteine are found to coordinate to the cobalt(III) ion via the nitrogen and oxygen donor atoms to give the meridional s-cis isomer. Electronic absorption, ir and pmr spectra are used to characterize the complexes obtained in this work along with elemental analysis data.

  • Synthesis of dichloro cobalt (Ⅲ) complexes of a flexible $N_2O_2-type$ tetradentate ligand, ethylenediamene-N,N'-di-${\alpha}$-isobutyric acid (eddib), has yielded two geometrical isomers, s-cis-$(Co(eddib)Cl_2)- and uns-cis-(Co(eddib)Cl_2)-.$ A series of substitution reactions, $(Co(eddib)Cl_2)^- {\to} (CO(eddib)Cl H_2O) {\to} (Co(eddib)CO_3)^- {\to} (Co(eddib(H_2O)_2)^+$ have been run for each of the two geometrical isomers. The reaction between the s-cis-(Co(eddib)Cl_2)^-$ complex and L-alanine (L-als) or S-methyl-L-cysteine (L-mcy) gave the meridional s-cis-[Co(eddib)(aa)) (aa = L-ala or L-mcy) complex. The S-methyl-L-cysteine was found to coordinate to cobalt (Ⅲ) ion via the nitrogen and oxygen donor atoms.

  • Cobalt is an essential microelements in many biological processes involving enzymatic activity. We found that $Zn^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$, which are in the active site of native calf intestine alkaline phosphatase (CIP), can be replaced by $Co^{2+}$ directly in solution. The effect of $Co^{2+}$ concentration on the substitution reaction was examined at ratios of [$Co^{2+}$]/[CIP] from 0:1 to 8:1. The quantity of $Zn^{2+}$ in CIP decreased progressively as the ratio was increased, but the amount of $Mg^{2+}$ changed in irrregular fashion. A series of active site models of the reaction mechanism of CIP are proposed. Low pH was found to promote the replacement of $Mg^{2+}$ by $Co^{2+}$. To understand how the substitution affects the enzyme, we also solved the secondary structure of CIP after reaction with $Co^{2+}$ in different conditions.

  • NiO-doped hibonite pigments were synthesized by the solid state method to get stabilized blue color pigment in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres. Optimum substitution condition with NiO for hibonite blue pigment was investigated. Experimental results were comparable to those of previous cobalt-minimization studies performed with other phosphate- or oxide-based cobalt-containing ceramic pigments (having olivine ($Co_2SiO_4$), spinel ($CoAl_2O_4$), or with co-doped willemite ($(Co,Zn)_2SiO_4$) structures). Composition was designed varying the NiO molar ratio increasing with $SnO_2$. The optimum substitution content is 0.93 mole NiO with 0.75mole $SnO_2$. The characteristics of the synthesized pigment were analyzed by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and UV-vis. Synthesized pigment was applied to a lime-barium glaze with 10 wt% each and fired at an oxidation atmosphere of $1250^{\circ}C/1h$ and a reducing atmosphere $1240^{\circ}C/1h$. Blue color was obtained with $L^*a^*b^*$ values at 43.39, -6.78, -18.20 under a reducing atmosphere and 41.66, -6.36, -14.7 under and oxidation atmosphere, respectively.

  • The polyol process which applies to cobalt, nickel. copper and precious metals is a interesting and unexpected example of such a method for preparing uniform metal powders. The reaction proceeds via dissolution, and the polyol acts simultaneously as a solvent, a reducing agent, and to some extent a protective agent. Submicrometer uniform cobalt particles can be obtained by seeding the reactive medium ($AgNO_3$) to achieve a complete substitution of homogeneous by heterogeneous nucleation. By varying the number of nuclei it is possible to control to some extent the average particle size in the submicrometer (0.5$\mu$m) range.

  • Lithiated cobalt and nickel oxides are becoming very attractive as active cathode materials for secondary lithium ion secondary battery. $LiCoO_2$ is easily synthesized from lithium cobalt salts, but has a relatively high oxidizing potential on charge. LiNiOz is synthesized by a more complex procedure and its nonstoichiometry significantly degraded the charge-discharge characteristics. But $LiNiO_2$ has a lower charge potential which increases the system stability. Lithiated cobalt and nickel oxides are iso-structure which make the preparation of solid solutions of $LiNi_{1-x}Co_xO_2$ for O$LiCoO_2 and LiNiO_2$ electrode. The aim of the presentb paper is to study the electrochemical behaviour, as weU as the possibilities for practical application of layered Iithiated nickel oxide stabilized by $Co^{3+}$ substitution as active cathode materials in lithium ion secondary battery.

  • New sulfur functionalized cyclopentadiene ligands, 1-[2-(thioanisole)]-2,5-dimethylcyclopentadiene (3), 1-[2- (thioanisole)]-2,3,5-trimethylcyclopentadiene (4), and 1-[2-(thioanisole)]-2,3,4,5-tetramethylcyclopentadiene (5), were prepared. In these ligands, the S-donor atom is connected to a cyclopentadiene ring by a rigid phenylene spacer. CpCo(III)-diiodo half-sandwich complexes (6-8) were obtained from reaction the ligands (3- 5) with Co2(CO)8, followed by treatment of I2. Substitution reaction of CpCo(III)-diiodo complexes with MeLi yielded the corresponding CpCo(III)-dimethyl complexes (9-11). Further transformation to the corresponding cationic cobalt complexes (12-14) were achieved by reaction of the CpCo(III)-dimethyl complexes with HB(ArF)4·2Et2O and trapping with CD3CN. The new sulfur functionalized cyclopentadiene ligands having a rigid phenylene spacer and the corresponding cobalt complexes were characterized by 1H, 13C and 19F NMR spectroscopy. The diiodo Complex 6 was also characterized by a single crystal X-ray diffraction method.

  • Nano-sized nickel substituted cobalt ferrite powders, $Ni_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ ($0.0{\leq}x{\leq}1.0$), were fabricated by the sol-gel method, and their crystallographic and magnetic properties were studied. All the ferrite powders showed a single spinel structure, and behaved ferrimagnetically. When the nickel substitution was increased, the lattice constants and the sizes of particles of the ferrite powders decreased. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer absorption spectra of $Ni_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite powders could be fitted with two six-line subspectra, which were assigned to a tetrahedral A-site and octahedral B-sites of a typical spinel crystal structure. The increase in values of the magnetic hyperfine fields indicated that the superexchange interaction was stronger, with the increased nickel concentration in $Ni_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$. This could be explained using the cation distribution, which can be written as, $(Co_{0.28-0.28x}Fe_{0.72+0.28x})[Ni_xCo_{0.72-0.72x}Fe_{1.28-0.28x}]O_4$. The two values of the saturation magnetization and the coercivity decreased, as the rate of nickel substitution was increased. These decreases could be explained using the cation distribution, the magnetic moment, and the magneto crystalline anisotropy constant of the substituted ions.

  • Cobalt-immobilized SBA-15 6a-c was synthesized from alkyne-attached SBA 5a-c by the reaction with $Co_2(CO)_8$ in toluene. Alkyne group was introduced into amino SBA-15 (4) by imine-linkage or substitution with propargyl bromide to afford iminoalkyne 5a and aminoalkyne 5b, respectively. Meanwhile, alkyne 5c was prepared in one-step by reacting triethoxysilyl hexyne with SBA-15. Dicobalt-complexes 6a-c were characterized by means of FT-IR, solid-state NMR and elemental analysis.

  • This study examined the crystallographic and magnetic properties of vanadium-substituted lithium cobalt titanium ferrite, $Li_{0.7}Co_{0.2}Ti_{0.2}V_{0.2}Fe_{1.7}O_4$. Ferrite was synthesized using a conventional ceramic method. The samples annealed below $1040^{\circ}C$ showed X-ray diffraction peaks for spinel and other phases. However, the sample annealed above $1040^{\circ}C$ showed a single spinel phase. The lattice constant of the sample was $8.351\;{\AA}$, which was relatively unaffected by vanadium-substitution. The average grain size after vanadium-substitution was $13.90\;{\mu}m$, as determined by scanning electron microscopy. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectrum could be fitted to two Zeeman sextets, which is the typical spinel ferrite spectra of $Fe^{3+}$ with A and B sites, and one doublet. From the absorption area ratio of the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectrum, the cation distribution was found to be ($Co_{0.2}V_{0.2}Fe_{0.6})[Li_{0.7}Ti_{0.2}Fe_{1.1}]O_4$. Vibrating sample magnetometry revealed a saturation magnetization and coercivity of 36.9 emu/g and 88.6 Oe, respectively, which were decreased by vanadium-substitution.
